The thing about the shard is that it only has limited light. It doesn't have infinite amounts to give.
When getting your 3rd subclass your ghost even says, "Look like the shard has just a little more light to give" (at least for me) hinting that its now out once you get subclass 3

That's just the small Shard There is still a mountain size Shard behind everything else The main reason is [spoiler]where is the Vanguard's Ghost?[/spoiler]

The Vanguard doesn't need ghosts. They're too cool

Well that's the reason they're still alive, but they have no way to receive the light without a Ghost From the first few mission, your Ghost was the one that consume the light and transfer it to you. Later on it may still be the same or just that since you are already filled with light, it can transfer I would need to go through the Campaign again. But I am completely sure that only out Ghost is alive and in the game.

Cayde still has his, it pokes up to look at you in the cutscene where you meet back up with him

We haven't really seen him in much combat so it's likely he hasn't lost his but it's still interesting that Cayde still has his Ghost. Just curious on why their Ghost isn't out out in the Tower, like how Destiny 1 was. Even the Speaker have his Ghost out. Any evidence on Zavala or Ikora?
