But if you can get past the “tough guy” persona and put up with his fronting long enough, you may get a glimpse at his true self buried deep beneath the surface. Deep down Titus is insecure and soft, and absolutely terrified of being “found out”. In his life before his Guardianship, Titus was an Associate to the Genovese crime family in Brooklyn, running small jobs from delivering messages, to running contraband, to planting bombs, from the time he was a young boy. Titus never knew his father but his Mother had been under their watchful eye from as far back as he could remember, and although it was against her wishes he was raised in “the life”, never knowing much else apart from putting his life on the line for his family every day, even at the risk of being caught. When he was fifteen years old he kissed his first girl and realized he was gay, and so his paranoia began, and his mask was born. Sicilians were devout Roman Catholics who upheld the teachings of the Church, but twisted them to suit their lifestyle; murder ran thick in the organization, and among the things they would have killed a man over, homosexuality was one of them, as it was an abomination to God. Titus spent the rest of his life pretending to like women around the men of the family, but looking over his shoulder in his personal life. And although his death wasn’t due to his secret being unearthed (he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time), by then it had become embedded into his very being as who he was, and his habits have been impossibly hard to break. The first thing Titus did when he awoke to his Ghost was run- he picked himself up out of the dirt on his fresh, wobbly legs and ran for ten miles until he reached the Atlantic coast. And when he got there he dropped to his knees and wept, then laughed himself to sleep. He didn’t see anyone for the first five months of his new life; fighting the fallen was a good outlet for him to channel the anger and confusion into as he learned about the Light and what he could do with it. When he met Os, Titus had almost completely forgotten how to interact with another human being, and as his new friend recalled, he was “a raving asshole who just wouldn’t leave him alone”. The truth was, Titus was afraid- he didn’t want to be alone anymore but neither could he wrap his head around Os’ even-tempered personality and hyper-intelligent mind. And so they fought, a lot, Os to try and chase him off, and Titus striving to understand just one thing that came out of his mouth and not snap back with some ill-tempered, knee-jerk response. It took several more months for him to finally break the tension, but he opened himself up just enough for Os to understand what was going on inside that head of his, and they continued on with… slightly less fighting than before. When they finally made it to the tower two years later, they were divided for their mentorships accordingly (Os to the Warlocks of Rue’s library, Titus to the Titans of Daybreak), but because of their familiarity with each other were assigned to Jynn for mentorship on patrol outside the walls. Most of his downtime is spent pestering his best friend while he works or competing for glimmer in a Titan Fight Club and putting his true skills to work.
