Why were Machine Guns Removed?
*A Wild Gringo has appeared*
Hello all, I'm just here to voice a little question I'm surprised nobody has asked, why were machine guns removed from Destiny 2? We do know that Machine Guns are not in Destiny 2, with many sources citing this, namely Game Informer. I am not angry or something like that, just a bit perplexed as to why Bungie would remove a weapon type that has been far from troublesome. The best reason that I could see is that Bungie has stated that the new "Heavy" slot, now called Power Weapons, are for One Hit Kill weapons and Machine Guns are certainly not in that category. This still leaves the question of why not move it to the kinetic/energy slot? Obviously they would need to be adjusted in these slots heavily to make them on the same level as a pulse rifle or Auto Rifle. Still it seems like moving and balancing it would be optimal to all out removing it if it was simply because it did not fit into the power slot. Anyone have any other suggestions as to why perhaps this weapon type was removed?

  • The limited power ammo is already a critical game turning issue, the team that gets the power ammo, has a significant advantage with swords for example. Machine guns were already a key advantage in D1, if used well or correctly. The larger maps balanced this to a point, as did the larger maps with rocket launchers, but the D2 maps are so small, the rockets often take out players from across the entire map not by targeting the players but a back or side wall. Moreover, machine guns with their 1 or 2 shot kill potential at very high impact and speed would cause many e-sport team players to cry for balance, light machine guns after fast but hard to center and fairly weak impact. This is not the case with (heavy) machine guns... because one player, that knows how to use a (heavy) machine gun well, could take all 4 enemy players out in about 2 seconds since they are going to be bunched up, for team shooting of course.

  • Ammo. Power weapons seem to be high dps low ammo weapons. Machine guns don't fit this model.

I'm not saying I agree with the removal of the weapons, but after the events of earlier today, I think I understand. Playing Doubles, I used a Nova Mortis and both heavy crates to pull off not only a Reign of Terror (though those are a rarity for me) but also my first ever Mark of the Unbroken, and I realized something. Of my three* Reigns with my Titan, all relied heavily on my Thunderlord or Nova. Also, I had multiple five- and six-kill streaks, and one where I scored seven before my mag ran dry. With proper tactics (play conservative, wait in ambush, don't get cornered), a heavy machine gun is a nightmare to fight against. It's possible that with D2's PvP meta, machine guns will simply be too powerful. By eliminating them, they're stopping them from dominating the Crucible before they start to. *I know only two show up on my profile. I got #3 in a game that I was ejected courtesy of a baboon or weasel or something. Even though it was never recorded, it did happen.

What im going to say is not for the OP but for some commenters below. Saying that they couldnt balance it properly is pathetic. When you desing a game, you think about all these weapon balances and their game mechanics in the start of the game. After that you make some rough pre alpha prototypes and test if they will work properly. If not, they are removed before nobody sees them, and if they work they will get the normal animations and graphics etc. You simply dont just make a fully animated, graphics and sounds ready weapon type in lets say month before the first trailer, and then realise that its difficult to be balanced. If they truly removed it for this reason, then they had some serious issues in the early/mid development phase.

      • they couldn't find a way to balance them in the game easily so they removed them.

      • Simple answer actually. They cant balance them because they all suck at PvP development so they simply removed them only to charge us for them on the future as a dlc

        • I think because you pick up power ammo right? It'd give you like 30 shots and they're all 4 taps to a guardian. You can easily wipe a team every round if it's elimination

            • Efficiency high PvP and general lack of PvE use is my guess. In PvP, you can get a lot of easy kills with a Machine Gun, even if you would just get 75% of a mag, if you don't miss too much it's a few really easy kills. The obvious balance would be to reduce ammo, right? but at the same time, wouldn't it be kind of stupid to give you a machinegun where you never get more than 50% of a single magazine If they give it too low of ammo, they get dominated by the other Power Weapons. They probably tried it out, testing out if they can get the right balance without making it feel like you got unusually low ammo, but ultimately chose that it wasn't working. AAand is probably why we're getting Sweet Business. Then there's PvE. Save for some niche guns, they're underpowered in PvE, but not because they do too little damage, but because their damage only shines if you SUSTAIN it (Ie stand in front of your targer and shoot out everything), which except against raid bosses and their specific damage phases, other bosses this doesn't work out so well as they just hammer you down. I wouldn't mind seeing HEAVY turrets take their place. I'd say think Halo mounted turrets. In Halo you could break off turrets and tote them around until the ran out of ammo, and the balance for this was that they impaired BOTH your aim and movement speed.

            • There are a lot of changes I don't get. I like the idea of snipers as heavies, but I think that fusion rifles are the personification of energy weapons, and shotguns make more sense as kinetics.

              • all problem weapons got relegated to the power weapon slot. I don't have faith that D2 will be a decent game, from what Ive saw and heard at E3 this year. Sounds like very little has changed

              • People wanted primary gun fights, this is what we got. We wanted buffed primaries along side of our specials, but we got even WEAKER primaries and NO special weapons instead. Lol RIP year 1.

                • To be fair, the great 'machine gun nerf' a couple of years ago, took machine guns out of the game. Those 150 round 'Corrective Measures' in PvP were ridiculously savage. 'Against All Odds' was the Grim Reapers scythe. Honestly, I will miss machine guns, I did shed a tear when I heard this, but perhaps this is for the best... Machine guns 2014-2017 RIP

                • Honestly, they were too good in PVP and with the Gjarrahorn in Y1, they were mostly useless in PVE. Before the heavy ammo nerfs, a skilled player could go on a massive killstreak with ease. I was one of those HMG abusers and this is definitely a welcomed change. I used to use the BTRD-45, which had a roll that allowed me to have nearly maxed stability and over 40 plus rounds. I would go on massive killing sprees often.
