• Basically Luke Smith himself is concerned about the community backlash over their archaic network model system that plagued D1 with substantial issues and their choice to not transition to primarily utilizing dedicated servers. Meaning that the community voice of discontent over this is keeping them awake at night as it pertains to pre-orders and launch sales.

Game sessions will now be hosted on Bungie servers instead of players' consoles which should provide the connection quality people have been asking for. That being said, it could still be horribly broken.

      • Damage control being done by Bungie based on backlash from the player base over not having Dedicated Servers in D2. As written below by Fury. Preorders and potentially Sales of D2 have potential to suffer based on this. Bungie decided to muddy the water by announcing a so-called "hybrid". Nobody knows if this will be an improvement or not. The question is whether you will blindly believe an improvement has occurred in D2 or WAIT until actual gameplay and actual player feedback occurs prior to purchasing? Bungie doesn't want you to wait. Bungie wants you to throw your money at the screen.

      • Bungie is going to try and make it so that you get the best of both p2p and dedicated servers, that's what it sounds like at least. People are still thinking dedicated servers are 100% superior to p2p and servers fix all the problems.

      • I think the general jist of it was it'll have some hybrid gubbins a bit like the ones Activision uses for CoD.

        Sure. TL:DR
Everything is still the same. We moved a couple of client roles to the server to see if that helps.
Not expecting anything drastic to be different.

      • TLDR: Bungie is restructuring their networking to try to get the best aspects of dedicated servers ( stability and consistency) and the best aspects of p2p networks (flexibility and immediacy).

          • Just means same connection issues u have now you'll have in d2. Hybrid servers my ass... Bungie designs the entire d2 crucible around wanting to be taken seriously and wanting to be the next big mlg game. Then they say no dedicated servers??? One of the main things players wanted in d1 and asked for in d2..?? I love destiny but that decision blows my mind

          • They came up with whatever they felt would shut people up. Same system they've been using, with some tweaks apparently? I'm skeptical, but I guess we'll see whenever they decide to release the beta... and more importantly, come September.

          • Bungie is doing damage control to explain why after the years of the Destiny community voicing they wanted dedicated servers Destiny 2 will not have dedicated servers. Community: Wait there aren't any dedicated servers.... Bungie: We know you guys were really unhappy about the lag in our product and expected us to address this problem with dedicated servers. However we are opting to go with a slightly modified version of the system that we are already using. Community: Will this fix the problems with lag? Bungie: We think this will fix the problems with lag but we cant promise you that you wont continue to see the very same problems you saw in the past. Community: Why not go with dedicated servers then Bungie: It's not a part of our vision for this game. Community: Was this about money? Bungie: No, oh by the way don't forget to preorder your copy of Destiny 2... Community: When is the Beta Bungie: We aren't ready to tell you but it will be sometime between now and September...

            • Put in simple terms. They have opted to create a hybrid system. Lots of stuff working in the background on their servers. But on the most basic connections, it's still P2P. The idea would be to reduce info lost between server, player and player. They used this system for D1, but the server dealt with less info than it will for D2. This, in theory, should reduce most major lag issues, but it's not going to cure it TL;DR half dedicated server, half P2P= hybrid

                • Bungie is using the same servers for D2 that they had in Destiny. Destiny has never been strictly P2P.

                • They will use the same server system they did for Destiny, but they will improve upon core aspects of it, reducing lag.
