Don't kill significant enemies so quickly.

This has bothered me since Crota. Start with him. The big boy who killed "the largest force of guardians ever assembled on Luna", and "slaughtered the legendary Wei Ning." The Titanic Hive god, the monster of Luna that wielded his infamous Sword that could Drain the Light of any guardian. The herald of what would be our end. The big crystal that dies in 1 mission. Then we have his father. The Hive god that always needs to understand. 1 of 3 who guided the Proto Hive into the massive force they are now. Powerful enough to defeat even a worm god. Guides his endless armies in a ship that is inside his realm, that is inside his ship. Dies in 6-7(?) missions. I mean sure, they were enjoyable missions, and the raids did give us a satisfying ending, but do these significant enemies really need to die after just 2-3 hours of gameplay? Put some effort into the next big bad baddies. I don't want to see Xivu arath, Savathûn, the emperor of the Cabal and who knows what commands the vex die in such little time. Maybe its me, but give me some episode type of experience. "The first week of this expansion features phase 1 of banishing Xivu Arath to their own realm." Then do some crazy stuff that aren't just silly quests to advance in the story, until the new episode releases the following week. Would be a shame of the build up of the characters to see them die so soon and easy. /discuss

  • I think taken king was a great campaign. Sure we defeat oryx in a few missions but the point is that he was weaker and more susceptible to the light outside his realm. We then go from planet to planet systematically dismantling his forces until we finally confront him on his own terms. The simplest answer is we are just stronger than our foes we need foes that kick our ass and send us running. Sound like something you'd like?

  • Everything is in the wrong order HoW should have been first then VOG, CE, ROI, finally KF with a few tweaks it would have made more sense using skolas to bring the vault to our attention and finishing this version of destiny with us killing an almighty hive god.

    • I personally think they are just too good at overhyping stuff. I think the content we got is pretty good. You're right it is super short and I don't like that it's short. I think they were held back a lot by this game's foundations starting on last gen consoles. So there is that. But they hype the shit out of simple little things. The way the devs talk about upcoming content is a little too "epic" for the reality we get. Case in point. Since it's fresh on our brain, remember the hype trailer for RoI? It showed guardians slowly walking up Felwinter's peak wearing raid/trials gear? And they were discussing how Felwinters Peak was a new social space, and how we'd have to actually battle to get the temple back from enemy hands. We'd go on this really cool journey to become an Iron Lord. They talked about how they would be sort of exploring the roots of where Iron Banner came from. That they were delving into this comment we'd had for so long (Banner) and explore the story behind it. I mean... c'mon. I enjoyed it for what it was, but this talk was way overhyped. "You'll be battling to take the social space back."
One mission Bungie. It was one mission. Partially on rails. It was just, one shot some dreg. Kill the occasional reaver vandal. It might have been fun if we could have made the difficulty like, waaaay harder. But it was basically Patrol difficulty. Cleared in like, 5-10 mins. Hardly a battle to reclaim the temple. Sure glad Saladin showed up at the end to kill those two dregs after we'd slain dozens of them.
"You'll go on a journey to become an Iron Lord yourself."
I thought this was actually going to be like an accomplishment or something. Like that after the story was over, we'd have to do these insane feats (like the book) to grind for weeks or even months to actually become an Iron Lord. And that being an iron lord had certain perks or something. Like certain additional missions would require iron lord status or something. Nope. Nothing of the sort. Congrats on your 5 story missions. Here's a sword that you'll dismantle... Lord Guardian. Jesus. Might as well have said "Lord Player One."
"You'll learn about the Iron Lords, and the legacy of Iron Banner."
No. Not really. We'll hear a bit about how they trapped Siva in the Iron Tomb. We'll see a glimpse, a god damned glimpse of emotion from a character like Jolder before she shuts the door. Maybe we should see more of that character interaction and emotion in the GAME? Nah. You're right. Put anything resembling a story line in the Grimoire. Definitely don't use compelling character interactions to tell the story, the whole story, of each iron lord in the game. Egads, man, why would they visit Bungie.net then?
They talked about this shit like it was going to be epic. It was okay. About as epic as it got was soloing the Gally mission. And again... that was Nolanbot scanning something while we fought off waves of enemies. Least that was new, right? Hopefully leaving last gen behind and roping in new RPG writers will point their content in the right direction. I love this game but dear god the content should be deep, riveting, full of likeable story and characters, and actually match what we are being sold.

      • If episodic content is your solution, your creativity is even worse. Episodic simply means that it's timegated. As soon as that pops off, the servers will be straining every single week for those who want to play it right away, still giving just a few hours on content per go. But to make episodic content possible, everything will be ten times worse than the haters say Destiny already is. Copy content, content behind dlc/timegates, lack of insentive to keep playing every single week until everything is released... and the list goes on. Maybe having 3 or 4 medium sized, spread DLCs dedicated to one goal/boss would be better. With each DLC having a clear readon for the gaps. For exampe, the Vanguard has to investigate or clear out an area, which will take some time. In the next DLC they have found something, allowing us to investigate and bring a sample, which will also take time. Finally the big boss attacks us, causing us to retreat and have some big fights we will lose in the end, having a final confrontation in the next. It keeps the story going, give a sense of accomplishment and any small timegates at least has a story-related reason and keep us busy for a while. I'd see it as: DLC 1: Investigate Luna. DLC 2: Investigate the Spire of Venus. DLC 3: Raid on the Crystal. DLC 4: Defend and clear the Spire. DLC 5: Crota Rises! DLC6: The Spire, Activated. DLC 7: Crotas Downfall/Oryx Awakened. DLC 8: Beacon of Hope, Venus recovers.

          • Honestly can't be too Mad at bungee for how they release content. If I play a raid 1x blind upon release with friends that's a good 5-8 hrs right there. Playing on 2 other characters and it still feels fresh, before mastery of the raid adds another 5-10 hrs. Playing the next week, it still feels fresh adds another 10 hrs. All together I can get about 30 hrs out of a raid with true enjoyment. Dlc costs vary but overall, for an hourly rate of enjoyment for how much I paid isn't that much. Compare that to a 2 hr long concert. Which can easily cost more then $60... Meh, let destiny keep going as is. Ppl still enjoy it. Just my opinion though.

          • I would like an anti-climaxic villain. Think about it. Our current leaders are the last ones to pick up a weapon and fight by your side. How much of a plot twist would it be if the emperor of the cabal would be such a politician. We raid his house, fight his strongest commanders, then we break into his bunker only to find him surrendering. Would be a change of pace i would welcome into this blindly run and gun game.

Gameplay =/= Lore. And Orxy doesn't die in the story mission. Should be obvious since the location you fight him is not his throne world. The Raid-Oryx looks massiv, is very powerful and requires (as designed) even more than just a single guardian to defeat him.

              • Well that was what the raids were for bud... You sent them to their throne world after killing their physical form. So there would be no reason for something like that

                • personally I was thinking the same thing like a idea that I came up with is only the first part of the raid for the cabal story cabal attacked the city and we repeled them and now were on the offensive and we push them to their forward base on earth in old chicago with the aid of the house of kings (asuming the fallen become a playable race) and a huge battle with thousands of gaurdians and fallen commence against the cabal general. the start of the raid begins with your fireteam of 6 gets dropped off along with a few skiffs of fallen allies to help you attack in the trenches to knockout AA guns taking out our ships. (during the raid Zavala/other character is comanding you) as your characters look around you can witness the battle around you. The next part is sneaking around the flank to disable the cabal defensive messures to the base which lead to fighting a high ranking officer and psions. After the defeat you continue the assult on the base of operations your firteam has to battle 3 advance model goliath tanks. Once then the rest of the allied forces are taking the brunt of the cabal army you move in to assassinate the cabal general. However towards the end of the fight a huge explosion occurs killing all guardians in the firearm, however the general is escaping and your ordered to return to help the pinned down allied forces leaving the general to flee to mercury. After saving the guardians part 2 of the raid will be unlocked after completing missions and quests to supply guardians for a full assault on the cabal on mercury and to finish the general off. this is just my idea though

                • They're pretty much pushing a classic anime dbz/bleach type structure out. We're always facing the most powerful enemies out there...... until a more powerful one pops up. It's just an insane never ending buildup of power level. It works for a while, but eventually it just feels fake. You don't feel like any boss is of significance anymore because something more powerful is bound to pop up later. At least they have a few different races to spread the power jumps around for. Too bad they ignored that and just went 0-100 with the hive while tossing everyone else in the gutter lol. They powered up one so fast that everything else is gonna feel like cannon fodder until they power them up to a similar level.

                • That exactly what I said before. We walked in and pimp slapped Oryx in what felt like a week at most storywise. Oryx was a Hive GOD, it should have taken (no pun intended) much longer to defeat him. I don't even want to talk about Aksis or Atheon lol Here's a post where I talk about this and other things Destiny 2 needs. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/217152957?sort=0&page=0

I loved RoI for the life span of it...which was like a month. Loved the Dawning too. But yes, you're so right.

                    • AE did something similar to this in AQW. They'd release content leading up to the main bosses. Each one had a quest line that required grinding and sometimes puzzle solving. It was a great game. 2D RPG with seemingly endless content. Free to play too. Here's what they did... I go a bit in-depth with the storytelling, but it's the gist of what happens and shows how long things take... There were 13 Lords of Chaos led by Drakath. After defeating the 12 (which happened over a decade of updates) you have to challenge the final one who is... You. You eventually actually die in battle. However, you're a god (technically) and you take Death's life (kinda) to resurrect yourself. Then you go on and battle Drakath. You disarm him in combat after all the build up. You then return to your own realm, only to find out it's been destroyed. Honestly, it's the best canon story I've ever seen in a game. Lasted a long time and was filled with plot twists. That game, is how Destiny should've been. A long build up to the boss with a fight that you don't win by a landslide.

We Simply Used a Bubble Shield and Shot at Him Constantly, Atheon Could Barely Fight Back. Year 1 Version.
We Pushed Him Off the Map.
Totally agree with what you are saying OP. Enemies can be defeated without killing them out right, it would've given bungie a chance to further develop characters like Oyrx and Skolas. It would've been cool to put a name and face to the constant threat out there. Much better than the ambiguous "Darkness"

                          • Yeah, because bungo created a huge failure and disappointment. We where supposed to have a solar system of open worlds to explore. We where expecting a AAA RPG story with the FPS hybrid. We where supposed to have hours and hours of story, quests, missions, a massive universe. Instead we go grimoire and 2 hours per $30 DLC. It's an embarrassment. People then try to justify everything with grimoire cards, they try to pretend that there are hidden secrets and mysteries for "us" to solve but there aren't. It's shoddy story telling and I hope D2 is fixes this.
