Now that we have private matchmaking, should Trials be changed?

Leave Trials the way it is now.

Go back to Y1 matchmaking.

Create Flawless and Non-Flawless Tiers.

I don't care about Trials.

So now that we have private matchmaking and Bungie/MLG are showing interest in promoting Destiny as a competitive shooter (yes, I'm aware there are many additional changes before this could occur), I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are about where Trials now fits into Destiny? Originally Trials was seen as the PvP end game activity, but does the addition of private matches and tournaments somewhat change it's place in the game now? Objectively Trials Gear is primarily cosmetic, offering no real combat advantages with the small exception of the intrinsic Last Resort perk on adept weapons. As such would there be harm in adjusting Trials matchmaking or adding the much discussed tiered system into Trials to lower the difficulty for some of the less skilled players? Personally I would be in favor of some adjustment which might lower the barriers to entry into Trials for newer players due to the steep learning curve. I'll also openly state that I have never gone flawless in Trials, due in part to the fact that I'm an older player who can't keep up with the reflexes required for this game type, but also because I find the slow pace of elimination boring. Just interested in hearing what everyone thinks about Trials place in the game now that private matchmaking is a thing.

  • Trials needs to be SBMM. Period. If they force us to have SBMM in normal crucible, then ffs give it to me in trials. I hate going 6-0 just to match against some stacked team of streamers with a very small chance at maybe winning. It normally does not happen. Sure I've gone flawless after using the mercy. But I shouldn't be playing those guys. Ever.

No. Leave it the way it is now. All these new ideas people throw out for trials are just so people can make it easier for themselves. I disagree. OP has never been flawless, case in point.

      • Tier systems... Everyone starts the same, every weekend. In the same pool. All account based. Once a player has gone flawless, they will receive an emblem showing it. The next time that player attempts to go flawless that weekend, with any character, they will be out into a pool with players who have gone flawless 1-3 times account based that weekend. (1 time with all characters, or 3 times with 1 character). Teams will be matched based on highest flawless player that weekend. (If I hadn't gone flawless thus weekend, but play with someone who's gone 3 times, we will be placed in the 1-3 tier). If we go flawless again, all players in fireteam will recieve 1-3 tier emblem. Unless 1 of those players did not do entire card with team, then that 1 player does not receive emblem. It will go on like this with tiers 4-5. Then 5+. Going flawless in the 5+ tier will net those players with the greatest emblem. We may even be able to add another tier. I don't know how easy it will be to reach and what player populations will be. Good things about this. More people will reach lighthouse. Making the tier 1-3 larger. The players who are very good will pretty easily get to tier 4-5. 5+ tier will be smaller but basically be elite of he elite. On a weekly basis this tier system incentives the elite players to keep playing to reach emblem for bragging rights. But what about next weekend, no one wants the same emblem they already have. On top of the emblem they should give out armor sets based on rng like usual. Aka Parraia gear or however you spell it in the 5+ tier system. Once all Parraia gear is unlocked on a single character and worn during trials, except one allowed slot for any exotic player wants to use, another top elite emblem will be handed out, for the true best of the best with ornaments for weapons or armor that can only be unlocked by doing this. Making the top tear elite rewards purely cosmetic is essential. As being rewarded with better weaponry, is just another advatage given to players who don't need it. This will take players awhile to receive. Past the emblems, gear and ornaments will be rng based, incentive zing top players to keep going to gather it all. They will have access to ornaments, emblems, and cosmetic gear, including ships and possibly soarrows, that low tier players will not have access to. What do you think?

They should have Shaders and whatnot drop solely in the Flawless tier at a high drop rate.

          • I don't really see how private matches should affect Trials. In private matches you set the rules and play against friends or in personally organized matches where you agree on the terms. Trials is more of a challenge because it pits you against random people with its own rules (and rewards). Having private matches does not change it's relevancy. If anything, it lowers the barrier for entry for some people, because now they can practice in private and learn from friends without any consequences.

              • I would rather watch a streamer playing Trials and having to really work for it, than watch a streamer carrying people and steamrolling lesser skilled players . . . wow . . . you domed a guy . . . again . . . exciting gameplay . . . so yeah I'm all for a tiered system.

              • Hopefully private games mean that the demand for streamers will be to watch them playing each other, rather than just doing trials carries. Personally I'd prefer it if they just went back to the year 1 system. Two tiers would be dumb.

              • All I know for sure is if MLG destiny takes off and the competitive scene grows substantially Bungie is going to be in for a ride and will likely have to make a lot of changes. If at the very least make said changes possible for privates. This whole "destiny is an experience and we want you to experience all of it in this specific way" attitude isn't going to fly in the competitive atmosphere they are letting walk right in.

Keep trials how they are. You can practice in private Matches. Maybe bungie could create a Rumble Map called "lighthouse" so everyone could say "i've been there" ;) Edit: never made it to the lighthouse myself, so you cannot say i am One of this tryhard sweatys ;)

                • That flawless/non flawless tier system is complete bs and will never be implemented lol. Some people will never see the lighthouse which is exactly as intended by bungie, which is also why they changed the matchmaking for y2. If bad players want to compete against teams in their skill bracket, don't go for wins ;)

                  • Get in your trials wins right after the update. That's when, a) the meta won't be defined yet, and b) newer people (read: noobs) will be trying out trials for the first time. The more people that play trials, the more likely you play someone closer to your k/d, unless you're on the far upper or far lower end of the spectrum
