Into the Hellmouth, Part 50: The Tears of Eris

Hello, everybody, here's part 50 of Into the Hellmouth! Here's part 49 if you missed it, or, if you're looking for a different part, here's the master post! As usual, if you like it, give it a bump, and I'll get more out soon! Stay classy, Guardians! In the depths of the Hellmouth, Eris awoke. She felt . . . strange. She took in a deep, shuddering breath. And then she realized that her helmet wasn’t on. The acolyte had torn it away. She began to hyperventilate. Without air, she would die! Without air she - she should never have woken up in the first place. Yet she breathed. Somehow, despite the lack of breathable air in the Hellmouth, she was alive. She hadn’t been moved somewhere else - the gray stone around her was proof enough of that. And that led to her second epiphany - she could see. Eris blinked. What had happened? Was all of this some strange hallucination? Her vision did seem strangely augmented - she could see places that normally held only Darkness, and everything had acquired a strange, yellow-green tinge. And then, she looked down, and saw the acolyte. It was dead alright. His face had been carved into a ruin, black with blood. The rest of it’s body had fared no better. Eris knelt down by it. She picked up one of it’s arms. It sure felt real. As she did so, the gnarled hand opened, revealing two objects in it’s palm. Eris averted her eyes, so to speak. The fight had been real enough, then. But that still didn’t explain her vision. She turned towards the crystal in the center of the room, and saw three green eyes and a terrifying figure in it. Letting out a war cry, Eris hammered her fists at the crystal, even as the thing inside lunged at her. After a few minutes, she stopped, panting. Then, she looked up at the crystal. In it, she saw the creature, which also appeared exhausted. Weakly, she raised a fist to hit it again, and so did the thing in the crystal. And then, she stopped. So did her reflection. Eris starred, aghast. The thing in the crystal was merely her reflection. She touched her face, feeling the three green eyes embedded in her skull. The flesh around them appeared bony and raw, and an inky black fluid oozed from the orbs. Eris was sick at the sight. She turned around, and threw up. After a few agonizing moments, she stood again, and wiped the bile from her lips. Then, she heard something. A voice, calling her name. “Eris. . . Eris. . .” “Ghost?” she asked. “Eris. . . “ came the voice. “Ghost!” she said, this time with certainty. She ran in the direction of the sound, and found her ghost lying on the ground. She picked it up. “Ghost,” she said, “are you alright?” The little orb looked up at her, it’s blue eye blinking. “What are you?” it asked. Eris blinked. “I’m Eris,” she said, “you’re my ghost. Don’t you know me?” The shell shifted on the ghost. “Eris. . .” it said. “Eris. . .” and then the light flickered once, and went out for good. Eris stopped breathing. “Ghost?” she asked. This time, there was no response. “Ghost,” she whispered. She cupped the tiny thing in her arms like a baby, and then held it close to her chest. Then, she lay down in the fetal position, and began to sob. But Eris shed no tears that day - her new eyes had lost that faculty - or perhaps they had never had it. However, it did seem that the fluid that poured from the sockets seemed to come in greater amounts while her grief echoed through the empty chambers. How long she waited in those chambers, none could say. But eventually, the sobs stopped, only to be replaced by low, guttural moans. They were the moans of one who is dying, and can do nothing to stop it. Eris was not dying - but a part of her had. A part of her was forever lost in that pit. Regardless of wether she could make it out. Eventually, the moans stopped as well, and no sounds filled the air. Instead she just lay there, holding her dead ghost in her hands. Eventually, her thoughts wandered from that of her dead ghost and the dead part of her, and they turned towards Sai and Eriana. I have to find them, she realized. They need my help. Some part of her realized that she would be no help to anyone, but she stood up nonetheless. Shaking, she tucked her ghost into her armor, and walked over to Toland’s corpse. A cursory search of his pockets revealed nothing of use, save for his journal. That, she tucked into her cloak. And then, behind her, she saw the orb. She carefully walked over to the strange object. “It was you, wasn’t it?” she said. “You’re the reason I’m -“ she ran her hand over her face, “this.” The orb, of course, did not respond. Eris picked up the orb, and watched as it floated above her hand. “What are you?” she asked. The orb remained silent. Eris sighed, and tucked the orb away. “Very well then,” she said. “Let’s go find Eriana and Sai then, shall we?” And with that, she walked out of the chamber.
