Bungie just tweeted this Game Informer link

And it's by far the best way I have been able to read into the broken ties of the story! It told me everything from beginning to end on what has been told via grimoire cards to things bungie will fill us in on to things that are still in question yet people have their own fan-fictions on already. By far the best read all month long. Bungie please keep up the good work and continue filling these holes in this amazing storyline. Hope you Guardians enjoy these articles. Edit 1: Needless to say this article is now trending haha! I'm glad everyone is enjoying this backstory. I have read it all and I really hope that Bungie expands more on this story and the holes that lie within it all. Edit 2: I have read a good portion of comments and how people are annoyed at the fact that some outer source had to tell this story. I can agree with that but at the same time I wouldn't want a storybook implanted in the game to tell you these things. I want to play out the Collapse. I want to play out the battle of Twilight Gap. I want to play these events instead of reading an article. And I probably won't be able to play them but my guardian might be able to relive them or even better find a way to go back in time and reverse history. I'm telling you this storyline has potential out the butthole. Let's hear your fan-fictions!! Edit 3: I see that people would prefer to not have to read the story of the game outside the game itself. I can understand that but also there are a lot of games that have a hidden storytelling and RPG'S especially fall victim to these categories. I'm someone who runs to where the cursor is and picks up the mission and turn it in without reading the essay that they have in the mission description within that bounty. I miss out on a lot of the story because I have things I want to do. I want to get to the action. I wanna shoot the aliens. Not read hours of text when I can easily do that in my off hours/work (I work in a job that doesn't really require extensive attention). But I could probably also agree that there should be a in game grimoire/story book on the previous events that took place before "Destiny"

  • It's interesting they say the traveler stayed to fight & was crippled by the b darkness in the battle. I kinda enjoyed the idea that rasputin rained ordinance on the traveler to keep it here.

    •
Rasputin, detects the Darkness’ impending arrival, and rather than be utterly destroyed, shuts itself down in the hopes of being awoken later, as it computes there is no way to successfully combat the current threat.

In a heroic last stand that defies its previous encounters with the Darkness, the Traveler fights back rather than abandoning humanity. It expends its own enigmatic internal energy, called Light, to push away the Darkness.
I thought that according to the Grimoire, the Traveler was set to haul ass outta here but Rasputin prevented it from doing so. Not so much a "heroic last stand" as an "oh no you didn't". No?

      • The thing that I'm not understanding is that according to this article, none of the alien races showed up to attack us until AFTER The Collapse of the Golden Age? So The Darkness just simply "attacked" and destroyed everything? How? With what army? We talking some tentacled shadow mass stuff going on here? That doesn't make much sense to me. In addition... Hive origin lore is a let down for me. I imagined something way more badass... True Hellspawn shit. Not some crap about some evil worms and a transgender Big Bad.

      • I wish that Destiny had some sort of a library or something in the Tower, where you could access the grimoire cards. I would spend hours in there reading them. For some odd reason I can't do that on a computer screen.

      • To all those people complaining that the story should have been in the game, I don't agree with you 100%. When I'm in front of destiny I want to be playing a game. I don't want to spend the relatively limited amount of game time I have available reading things that could be easily read on my phone anywhere else. I get that people are annoyed but even for games like mass effect (which I thoroughly enjoyed) I just did not have time to sit there and read through that codex. I actually feel that the grimoire (And the app and the open API) is one of the best things destiny has going for it and I find it strange that people are so upset by it.

I swear I think Bungie takes pride in how terrible the actual in-game storytelling is. If I were them, I'd be embarrassed to post a link to another website that actually does a better job telling the story. I will admit though, the story for Destiny is pretty cool. And I do think that even some of the ambiguity makes it even more interesting because it makes people try to analyze it and think about different things. I just wish there was a better way for them to have revealed the lore.

Destiny definitely needed a way to read lore in game. Be it in ghost files or books you find or mission completion holograms or recordings or WARSAT pods scanned or something, even just having a little storage for each fragment and you give them to Eris who would translate them for you into little green, wispy files your Ghost could pull up. I feel like Destiny tried to do something like what Dark Souls did. Weapons and Armor had little tid bits all scattered about about the world or people or events and all of that. Destiny didn't do it nearly as well as Dark Souls did though...

Honestly it is a shame and a crime that only a fraction of the playerbase actually knows the lore. Rewritten or not. The Lore is rich and very well done. A library in game or perhaps a "Card Table" in that seedy area of The Tower would do wonders. Barely any of the playerbase goes to this website. It is not an overexaggeration to say that 90% of the Destiny does NOT know the story. Bottomline: No game should require its players to leave it un order to learn its story. The website should function as an alternative and should have things that help flesh it out. Bonus content basically. Modern days or not. Its lazy & should not be repeated in Destiny 2.

They've definitely retconned their own story. I am 99.98% sure that Rasputin was the one that stopped the traveller from leaving. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything about "the traveler decided to expand its light to drive back the darkness and that's why it's stuck in our solar system." The traveler only sent out ghosts to "help us" after Rasputin crippled it so that the Traveler only had two options, send out ghosts to develop a defensive army, or die when the darkness arrived.

                            • Once again proving that Destiny does indeed have a story. A badly executed one, yes, but nonetheless.
