Anyone have Bass tips?
I'm going to be buying a bass real soon, I was wondering if any of you kind folk here had any tips for me about playing?

I've been playing bass for 8 and a half years now. I just love to jam out. Music is my life...next to gaming probably. They fight for power. Anyway, yeah it's all about practice man. When you first start you'll suck and wonder how you could ever pull off riffs with ease, but it will come. Practice, practice, practice. I agree with Recon that a lot of times less is more. Still I would ask you to check out some Ryan Martini of Mudvayne and Justin Chancellor of Tool. Especially the latter, but a lot of it is technical, maybe after your first year of practice. Enjoy the bass!!!

Seriously, if you can toe-tap to it, it likely has a bass-line. It may not be from a bass guitar, but they can all help your chops.

The Fender Squire series, Peavey, the starter series for Yamaha and Ibanez are all well made and will make a great "backup" when and if you decide to "go for the gold". You'll learn what your playing style is, what fits your body best (hours hanging around your neck and things like weight, balance and shape become important). It will go a long way towards making a decision when you are looking at the high-end choices. Practice, practice, practice... and listen, listen to other people play, listen a LOT. Don't just listen to your favorite styles of music, expand your horizons and listen to other stuff. Bass lines from different genres can open your eyes to the amazing possibilities. Even (and especially) "old" stuff. If you are fortunate enough to get to play with a group of friends, realize that the drummer is your best friend. Pay attention, CLOSE attention to his right foot (bass drum). The bass is the bridge between the rhythmic (the drums) and the melodic (the rest of the music). Try to be a good bridge. Be a solid bridge, be a strong bridge. Don't worry about playing fast. Avoid bass "solos". If ever there was an instrument where "less is more", the bass is a perfect example. Creating a solid "groove" is far more important and more rewarding than being able to play like a machine gun. Drummer's right foot. I can't say that enough. That and practice. Listening to the red hot chill peppers a lot and working out what makes Flea so good will help. Same goes for Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Will you use a plectrum or will you finger pick. Using your fingers is more versitile as you can slap or pick. But you can get a really percusive sound using a pick and a lot of players will be able to play faster with a pick. Also learn a bit about how chords work on the guitar as you can play around the chords being played on the guitar rather than just using root notes, but some times just playing the root notes can be the best thing to do. And the drummer is your best freind as you will want to tie in with what they are doing more than any other band member. And dont try to play flash just for the sake of it. Work out what sounds best and go with it.

I have 3 basses. 2 Fretted, and one fretless (my Jazz Bass). Bass is so enjoyable, I love playing it more than guitar sometimes. i thought he ment fishing too! I used a hook and a leech in about 6 foot og water, I could see all the way down so I put it right in front of it and it hit and ran. It was 17 inches long and fought like a -blam!- :) sry, can't help ya with an instrument. I am going to get a electric one with at least a 5 watt amp too. I already have a chip becuase I found a white one on my way home from school just laying there kinda odd since I am going to get a guitar and then I find a chip that never happend before.
