The White House's guest list for The Pope questionable?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/09/22/white-house-guest-list-for-the-pope-irks-some-conservatives/
With today’s arrival of Pope Francis in the United States, there is simmering controversy over the Obama administration’s guest list for his visit to the White House, especially among conservative commentators who believe that the president should not have invited people at odds with the Vatican’s positions on gay clergy, same-sex marriage and abortion. On Monday, Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee waded into the debate with a tweet that said: “Classless decision by @POTUS to transform @Pontifex visit into a politicized cattle call is an insult to millions of Catholics.” But the Vatican and White House played down reports of differences over the guest list, which includes the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, a leader for transgender rights, a gay Catholic blogger and a prominent nun-lobbyist who bucked the bishops on the Affordable Care Act — for an event on the South Lawn to be attended by about 15,000 people. A Vatican source involved in the planning of the pope’s trip said it made sense not to “put him in an embarrassing situation.” It wasn’t a big worry, the source added, if there were a small handful of open church dissenters among the thousands. Moreover, the pope has met with Catholics from the gay and lesbian community and has said he would refrain from judging them.
Do you think it is wrong to invite proclaimed dissenters of the Vatican's policies to a visit by the Pope? If you are/if you were Catholic, thoughts on this? Paraphrasing Mike Huckabee, is this an insult to Catholics?
Please refrain from religious flaming, this can be a civil discussion if you allow it.
• I think this is perfectly acceptable based off what history shows. When Woodrow Wilson went to work on the treaty of versailles he did not bring a republican representative. This caused the republican senators and house representatives to become extremely hostile to the US joining the League of Nations. If Wilson had just sent a republican representative then the decision to join the League might have turned out differently. So back to the guest list inviting a representative from a different party is a good way to keep Congress on "your" = (the presidents) side more so than if you did not invite a Republican. As far as inviting someone whose views differ from the popes i think its a terrible idea but from a political standpoint it makes sense.

  • I grew up catholic, am now atheist, but I think pope Franny is awesome, he will be fine. He is cool as a cucumber in the midst of controversy and is incredibly tactful and knowledgable. I disagree with some of his views but for the most part I think he is the coolest pope since JP2.

I don't see an issue, as long as they don't cause any disturbances. I feel that the pope might rather have people who don't agree with everything he believes to speak to. Otherwise, what good is he doing if he's not spreading his faith to nonbelievers?

I think that the Pope is mature enough to put up with people who disagree with him on some issues being in the same room as him for a while. To be honest I'm not sure why this is an issue.

    • A lot of people like the pope (outside of conservative us) The pope basically dismisses faux news on climate and such. This basically destroys the republicans. Naturally they would demonize him and a lot of people have called him satan (lol I though you guy said Obama was?) If anyone was president and the pope backed your views? I don't see why any president wouldn't use that opportunity

      • The real question here is 'how the -blam!- can anyone manage to get offended about that, and why would they care that much?'

          • It won't be an issue with this particular pope. The previous Pope wouldn't be able to handle it but this one make get converts from his most outspoken critics. No joke he is pretty close to converting Castro a devout atheist dictator so these people are lightweights.
