Max Level and Light Level

Sorry Bungie, I love Destiny and I have been waiting to see if there is something I missed or am not understanding about the new character leveling system, but after three live streams and countless articles and updates about TTK, I have to voice my complaint/frustration/confusion with the new Light and Character Leveling system. The new system, in a word, is stupid. Sorry, I know that is not polite and a juvenile way of wording what I feel, and I am NOT calling the team at Bungie stupid, but my frustration with the system has me making exaggerated statements. I know that it was hard to figure out how much light would raise your level pre-TTK and grinding for gear to raise your level could be frustrating, but at least you could just look at one number and go "OK, I am level 33, I can do all the events under that without being under leveled." Now, I have no f'ing clue how to figure out if my character is strong enough for game content. I guess I can reach the level cap of 40, but if I don't have on the right light level, I still might be underpowered for content? And I might have a max light level, but not be a high enough character level for things? People complain about the stupidest things, and it results in changes that don't make any sense. (BTW, I never thought having to grind for higher level gear in order to raise your level was stupid. Playing for better gear and weapons in order to take on more difficult enemies is a staple of video games.) I understand people were upset that they had to grind to reach the max level... but that hasn't changed. Who cares if you are level 40, if you still can't do high level content, because your light level is not high enough and you have to grind for light. The problem still exists, nothing has been "solved"! The system has just been made more confusing. I really do love the game. I have played Destiny more than any other game in my entire 20+ years of life playing video games. It is immensely fun and the people at Bungie should be very proud. Thank you for a great game. I hardly ever visit or post things in forums, but I just felt I had to express my feelings on this issue.

Your character level is gained through XP. This is what unlocks content. The new light system is an average of both attack and defense. So, when something has a recommended light level, that means you'll want more attack for more damage, more defense for.... more defense, and the total Light value you get is an average of the sum of both. I don't see how this is confusing.

  • OK I don't know if you are still having issues with this but I thought of something that may help. you and I are in the same boat , I have been gaming since 87' . I have come across many RPG based games and some of them use a combat rating system on top of a character level . so look at light level as a guardians combat ability since light is what kills darkness . a guardians combat ability is simply an average of damage output and damage tolerance . I remember many ( and I do mean many many many lol ) RPG games that use combat ratings as a means to warn players when they are in over their heads. example : level 25 barbarian with weak armor and weapons low combat rating can get dominated by a lower level enemy . same level 25 barbarian with top notch armor and weapons will walk through evenly leveled enemy's and be able to produce much more of a threat . see the old system ( pissed me off lol ) didn't feel like a RPG element and it did not allow for really any customization or flexibility with any form of cozmetics. basicly I love handcannons so I want that reload at max light level but I also want it to look good . I didn't like VOG armor or Crotas end armor I thought the hunters gauntlets from TDB should of been on the titan ( giant spike for the shoulder charge lol ) and since HOW came out I have used the vanguard sanction six gauntlets cause its hand cannon reload bumped them to max light and they are the only pair I have found that glow with glowhoo ( makes my arms look like giant fiber optic glowing cables ) the new system should allow a more balanced and even forgiving system for aspects like this . I am excited for these elements and there will be many factors that will decide how effective and balanced it will all be . example given bungies earlier attempts it should be easy to get to enough light to do nightfall ( not too easy but it won't be relying on one piece of armor now ) so we all have multiple exotics that will go to year two that will be a good boost right off the bat since armor and weapons will work in the same system . hope I helped and if you want to chat about anymore of this or have a question I can try to help so ask away.

  • OK this new light level system will do you more than you think. in vanilla destiny one level difference ment 30% damage difference incoming and outgoing , this new system eliminates that huge difference to a much smaller percentage 4 to 5% is the educated guess now this new system makes use of all the equipment averaged ghost and class item included which means if you are short on one piece of armor or a good weapon then you will be effected less overall . this takes the main focus of armor with light and spreads it out so the system is more forgiving . also from what I have seen let's say you have OK armor and decent light but you just found a gun that you really wish was stronger cause its perfect except its weak then you can feed a few stronger weapons that you do not like to it and bang your weapon is stronger ( I do not know if this is also avalible on armor but god I hope so , it would make this game 1000 times better and make each piece of armor valuable )

    • Everything is still based on light level, each event will tell you the recommended light level you should be to take on this challenge. Basically instead of your armor leveling you to show your power, it shows a number to represent your "exact" power. In other words no longer will there be a point where your 32 and a half, now if your light level is 200, once you equip that new bad-a gauntlets your now light level 225. But to give you clarification they will tell you what the recommended light level to take on a event/activity will be.

      • To me it seems they have gone a more traditional mmprpg route. I could be wrong though.... lol! You have your character level, but then you have your gear score *light level* The better you gear, the higher the light level. So more dps and more armor. This will make harder activities doable.
