I just saw the gamespot video and i kind of agree with this, i never played WoW but i have logged over 500 hours of Destiny. I dont have everything but i have all the essentials so i only play ToO now. Dont get me wrong, i love this game as a FPS but i really never liked RNGesus. Since there isnt much of a story to keep playing like Halo im all pooped out and only want to play pvp every once in a while. For all the noobs out there, you will get gassed out sometime before the next DLC. You will, however, keep playing as it takes much more time to come to terms with this reality. Ive seen many good friends come and go. Even the ones that initially got me hooked, ive tried to get them back for pvp or a raid like old times but ive had to find new buds to go flawless with and do quick raid runs. Lets see how many actually have come to realize that Destiny is like going to an out of this world casino. Comment if you have a different view or just want to reminisce on how much worse RNG was before TDB. Hit that like button so the masses get to vote. Edit#1: so i got called a hipster, that was exciting. We are at 70% yes for now, keeps going up. Look i enjoy pvp, i guess the slot machine comparison is only for people who really want a certain gun. The only ones i still dont have are fourth horseman and the foil. At this point, im not grinding strikes and raids weekly to try and maximize the likelihood of me getting these guns. Ill get them whenever the hell that this. http://www.gamespot.com/shows/the-point/
i remember the forever 29 struggle, pushing templar and atheon over the edge for shits and gigs, still got my jackolytes!
• No, slot machines actually throw money at YOU. Not the other way around, we just throw money at the screen!

    • Yes, but for some this addiction is cheaper than a day at a casino.

    • Its a casino. No questions. But with all the exotics, I'm here for the sweet satisfaction of killing shit.

If Bungie really wanted to make a slot machine, then they did a pretty bad job. They removed farming for engrams and keys, this reduced playtime. They made loot drops insignificant outside of specific activities, again limiting playtime. HoW gave everyone a free exotic per character, all the added exotics are from a bounty that has a very night drop rate. Max level is no longer RNG. If this guy really wanted to crtizize these practices then he should have looked at mobile games that have literal slot machines giving in game currency and gear for REAL money, MMOs that have much lower drop rates and sub fees or micro transactions or even borderlands 2, a game that made players grind for the SAME weapon 8+ times. So why Destiny? Because it's popular (especially overseas) to hate and he knows that the video will get a lot of clicks a

I made a rather lengthy rebuttal to this in another thread, I'll edit if I can find it. The casino argument might make sense if I could drop some money into a slot machine and play as much as I want. There is a major difference between paying every single time you play and paying once to play as much as you want. Addiction is a much needed component of a game, otherwise games become disposable. Edit:

Danny has a problem with Destiny. He doesn't think it's a bad game, but its development surfaces some troubling ethical questions about the role of game design in keeping players addicted. Especially when expensive DLC is involved.
Good points on behavioral game design, but I don't agree with the overall sentiment against it. He talks about "removing content" which is an unfounded argument that needs to stop being pushed around, it's asinine to believe that because Bungie had already created some content that it should be given to you, that's not how business works. That's like going to a fast food restaurant, seeing some food sitting under the warming lamp and expecting them to give you that food along with your order, because it's made already. It's like going to work on payday and only getting half of your paycheck, because you already did that work two weeks ago and your boss doesn't feel like paying you for it now. It's a terrible argument and it needs to go away. Games should be addictive, that's the point, I want something that keeps me coming back, not something I play for a couple of days then collects dust on my shelf for eternity. Speaking of games that collect dust, expensive DLC? As apposed to purchasing a new game, at full price, and playing it a fraction of the amount of time put into Destiny? Destiny is a cost effective game, it provides the addiction and enjoyment, things that a game SHOULD have, at a very reasonable cost IMO. He makes a point about games being "worth it" if it culminates in an ending. He's promoting disposable games, which I believe is way more unethical than tapping into behavioral science. If you're happy purchasing new games all the time and trading them in or selling them because they aren't worth playing anymore than I guess that's where our views differ, because I'm not okay with that. The guy said it himself, Destiny does not have a sub, meaning that the cost of support and infrastructure has to be obtained through game and DLC purchases, meaning that DLC at regular intervals is NEEDED to support the cost of hosting your game environment, fixing bugs, and implementing features. Perhaps you're against Bungie/Activision making money off of their games, that their games should be sold at a price that is just enough to cover their costs and put food on their tables, that this very successful commodity that they are providing shouldn't grant them financial gains. In a perfect world everyone would work for free and share their products openly, but this isn't utopia, this is reality, and if you create a successful product you should be rewarded for it. tl;dr - Addictive games > disposable games. P.S. - When I say "you" I mean the people that are against behavioral game design or companies profiting off of their products.
It a sense it is essentially a gambling simulator, and I'm fairly certain that's what Bungie were going for, although that being said, is that such a bad thing? At the end of the day it's a game designed to keep us entertained and all games use various mechanics to keep us entertained and coming back for more that's just how they work, so no I don't feel like a gambler and embrace my playing.

      • Gaming in general is an addiction. If you're not playing Destiny you're playing something else. Imagine how many hours you log on a console itself.

      • I voted yes, but here's the deal. If you're playing this game ONLY because you want to "win" or score epic loot you're doing it wrong. I play Destiny because I enjoy it, it's FUN for me. Sure winning and scoring loot is awesome, but you should be enjoying yourself along the way.

I was getting burnt out til I started investing time in the crucible control. KD steadily rising and I'm having a blast. Even created a warlock to take advantage of my play style that doesn't fit my two titans

                      • Depends what you do really. If you still grind ie. Daily / weekly. If you do bounties daily. Ether chests. If you play strikes still, even though you've done them hundreds of times. If you do nightfall by speed running through, just to get an exotic you've already got. Then yea.

                          • I've seen this before, and he brings up some good points. Speaking personally however, I don't play this game for loot. I've got everything I really want. I play this game because it's a great example of interactive design capable of bringing people together. I'm not denying that it has issues. I'm just saying, I don't play this game because "Just one more raid man I just I just I just need to do one more ONE MORE! and THEN...THEN I'LL FINALLY HAVE THAT HELMET! THEN I WIN HAHAHA!!!......maybe" I play it because it's fun to play with friends.

                          • I first mentioned this on some forum posts back in 2014. I said that the addiction to the grind is like a gambling addiction and RNG was lot a slot machine.

                          • Like many others here, I've pretty much got all I need, just a couple of extra luxuries but not really bothered (damn praetorian foil!), so not playing for the loot. It's a really fun game that has been the most social game I've ever played. In all honesty, I get most enjoyment now from helping people who haven't raided much or done PoE etc. It's surprising how much fun it is to take an inexperienced team through a raid. Sure it takes time, sure they'll do some stupid shit, but so did I when I was learning, it's a good laugh and reminds me why I love the game. Much better than just flying through all the activities just for the sake of it.
