Khvostov XM-7 : An Upgrade

(Before reading this, please keep in mind that this idea is open for improvement. Anything marked with a (?) is something I'm not completely sure about. I value your input!) Story All over the forums, people are posting about upgrading the beloved "Khvostov 7G-02" from common, to exotic. Personally, that sounds very interesting. The description of the original weapon reads "An ancient instrument of war, battered and worn - but it still fires true. Perhaps it's been waiting for you." From this, we can tell the weapon has clearly seen action. It has seen the horrors of battle before "the collapse", and ever since then it sits, and waits. First, days. Then, weeks. Later, years. Time moves slowly as this weapon gathers dust. But on the fateful day, when you were resurrected, it saved you. It protected you. Whether or you wanted it or not, it became you. It launched you into a world with much more powerful weapons and gear, and once you obtained these weapons of mass destruction, you tossed it aside. Whether it sits in your vault, or you dismantled it. But what if this weapon saw action again? Not only saw action, but BECAME action. Ladies and Gents, I introduce to you, the "Khvostov XM-7". (Concept art coming soon?) It is an exotic auto rifle with a personality all it's own. It's description reads "What once walked, now sprints. What once glided, now flies. What once served, now reigns." The Khvostov XM-7 is a modified and experimental version of the original Khvostov. The reason for its experimental nature, is because of its firing modes. There are a total of 2 firing modes for this weapon and with each firing mode, a different exotic perk will appear for each one. Firing Modes - Automatic: This weapon can fire in a fully automatic mode, similar to the original weapon. It's impact is slightly enhanced, along with enhanced stability. The magazine size is improved from 25 to 34(?). The reload and range, however, are the same. The exotic perk for this mode is "Ancient Aggression" which increases the damage dealt per bullet after a kill for a short time. Similar to NLB, but does not have to be a precision kill. Stacks twice. - Burst Fire: This weapon can fire in 3 round bursts, similar to pulse rifles. The ROF is slightly faster than Red Death, with slightly less impact. The magazine size is downgraded from 25 to 21(7 bursts (?)). The range is slightly improved, while reload is the same. The exotic perk for this mode is "Locked and Loaded" which rewards players an additional 4th bullet to a burst of 3 that all land on a target.(?) - Single Shot: (This mode is very experimental and currently just a concept.) This weapon can fires one shot per trigger pull. (To keep this weapon from being overpowered and too good in every situation, I've tried to limit the range as much as possible. So instead of shooting like a scout rifle, it shoots like a hand cannon (plot twist)) The weapon's barrel and ammunition are swapped for a heavier hitting result. The result is a weapon similar to Word of Crota in stats. Stability is decreased, along with the magazine size going from 25 to 10. Enhanced impact. EDIT1: Because hand cannons have different traits then rifles, I have decided to change this mode to a high rate of fire, low impact scout rifle. Details will follow. Firing Modes Explained As of now, there are two firing modes. To keep one from being superior to the other, the stats will change respectively. One having better range than the other, one having better impact than the other, etc. Also, To try to keep the firing modes interesting, I would like the exotic perk to change along with the firing modes. I'm still trying to iron out the kinks, but the goal is to have one mode thrive in a certain situation while the other mode thrives in a different one. Quest lines So far I have two possible quest lines. I don't know which one is better or worse or what. -Quest line Alpha: 1. Acquire XM-7 blueprints (A random drop from a patrol mission requiring you to scan an environment. 1/40 chance(?) because of how easy it is to do those missions.) 2. Obtain replacement barrel from Gunsmith (turns common weapon into a rare) 3. Kill 500 enemies of the darkness with this weapon (gains data about the weapon the Gunsmith can use later) 4. Return to Gunsmith to analyze data (Self-explanatory) 5. Acquire an TTK Auto Rifle, Pulse Rifle, and Hand Cannon (Specific?), fully upgrade them, then dismantle them. (They drop "Enhanced Weapon Components"; exotic grade materials) 6. Return to Gunsmith to assemble (He assembles it, but says its missing something. Tells you to purchase "An Ancient Spark" (An older mote of light) from Xur) 7. Purchase "An Ancient Spark" from Xur (I'm sure Xur should say interesting dialogue with that) 8. Bring the spark to the Gunsmith (Final assembly) 9. Acquire weapon (You'll probably wet your pants here) -Quest line Bravo: COMING SOON! Extras Instead of players deleting their characters and obtaining the original Khvostov and have to level up their character again, players should be allowed to obtain another in some means. Either a drop from a major on Earth or searching for the deceased explorers on Mars and obtaining one from their bodies. (Opening cutscene anyone?) BUT, if you happen to still have the original Khvostov from when your character started the game, your exotic will have a small cosmetic flare, while the newly obtained Khvostov will not. ---------------------------------------------- If you'd like to hear more, tell me! If there is something you want improved or to correct, please do so! Thanks for reading!

  • Sounds great. I liked how the Husk of the Pit was upgradeable and I always thought that the Khvostov and the Stranger's rifle could have the same upgrade path to be made exotic.

  • Sounds like an exotic weapon similar to the necrochasm where it starts off common and you have to upgrade it again and again. Definitely would use this.

I'd like to see a BYOE ( build your own exotic ) random quest drop from Xander .. You have a choice of hand cannon, sniper, shotgun, sidearm, LMG, rocket launcher frame .. That's just it a frame .. There is a bounty quest to unlock the frame .. Once the frame is unlocked you take it to the gunsmith and he will have every type of barrel, action , site, scope, stock. Each part requires a quest to unlock .. Your imagination is the limit . Random examples Hand cannon frame +sniper rifle barrel + iron sites + red dot + ambush scope+ solar burn + fusion. Then roll for random exotic perks all know exotic perks available for weapons parts installed Sidearm +shotgun barrel+ red dot + iron sites + holographic site + void damage There would be tons of epic fails but some random unique bad assery as well like taking a shotgun frame and putting a rocket launcher barrel on it could turn it into a grenade launcher of sorts.. The catch is once you add something, it cannot be removed .. If you put a a scout rifle barrel on a machine gun frame .. And it's junk and performs poorly.. You scrap it and wait for your chance again .. My personal choice would be a rocket launcher frame with the 4th horsemans rotary barrel and shogun style load where each rocket is loaded like a shell.. Maximum magazine would be 4 maximum shells carried with armor boost would be 8.. Not sure what site I would use or elemental damage . Would be great for spamming hordes of enemies or a boss like skolas or atheon but work again you for crota or other fast moving enemies . You could apply a lot of DPS quickly or miss entirely and lose all your ammo ..

        • A buddy of mine and I had a similar idea at one point. Laughed our butts off because of what spawned it. Someone had thought you could change the difficulty of the tower for a couple seconds, and my friend said "So what? Now the Cryptarch will be even worse? You bring him a exotic chest engram and he gives you an ascendable Khvostov?" I think it's a pretty cool idea.

            • Sounds interesting, but the probability that Bungie would implement it after their TTK interview flop is very slim. If anything, could you add to the description this... "What Once Crackled, Now Thunders. What Once Flickered, Now Flares. What once rested, now rises." Your description got me on this subject, now I can't stop coming up with fancy one-liners. But my biggest issue with this suggestion is the changeable firing modes. Once people realize that one particular mode excels above the others, your additional modes will generally be ignored by all but the curious and devoted. And the description: *What once shot, now.... booms...* That is very different than the rest of your description. It went from poetic and multi-meaning to highly specific and cliche.

              • Great thinking all in all, though I wouldn't agree with the ability to change fire rates.

                • Cool idea, although this seems way too easy to get. Also the fact it can change fires modes is kinda silly, why use any other weapon when this one is 3 in 1.
