Story Writing

How many of you are currently writing stories? Or at least thinking about it? What kind of stories do you like to write? 1st 2nd or 3rd? A mix? I'm trying to write a short story about 10-15 pages long. Of course, it'll be my first, but i'm sure it'll be fine with enough editing. I've also gotten very interested in how the 2nd person is written in, like in interactive story telling. I might go down that route with my story, it'll be a bit longer of course. I'm excited to see how it will turn out.

  • I wrote one that took part after Halo 3 about the Brutes attack earth again before humanity could rebuild. Posted the 1st part on the Halo Wars website but never got the 2nd part up.

  • I mostly just like to read and write about what I read. I also enjoy discussing books with people who have read them as well. As for creating original work? I tend to leave that to those that are much better than I.

  • I had a crazy dream a week ago and when I first woke up I just started writing about it. I haven't touched it in a while but it's in first person.

  • I began writing stories when I was in middle school and it quickly turned into a hobby during my freshman year of high school. I'm now a junior and I'm writing a bit less now. So far, I've written a few fanfics and that's about it, really. I wrote a novel once, but that was back in the day and it's really bad.

  • I wrote a story, but that kind of got me banned last night.

  • I've usually only found 2nd person in interactive storytelling scripts and/or DND descriptions. I personally prefer third person for most narratives, but it depends on your style and how it would serve the narrative. If you want a great example of first person writing, check out Roger Zelazny's "Chronicles of Amber". It's a great series (About... 6 books I believe. It's been a while) all written in the first person perspective of Corwin and his son Merlin. My reference document for narratives tends to be David Edding's Elenium (A trilogy), as his development of character and use of language always gets me. But more to the question, I'm currently writing three documents: 1. A fantasy novel entitled "The Captain's War". It's looking like it may end up a trilogy, as I've written 500+ pages scattered about the narrative arc. 2. A Game Dev Doc for a F2P RTTS combining elements of LoL Fremium/Menu system with the classic Myth series-esque gameplay. (It's been too long since a good RTS has come out IMO) 3. A Game Dev Doc for an RPG, steampunk trilogy. About 250+ pages in on the story bible for this one. :) I like to write, which is odd considering I aspire to be an Environmental Artist/Level Designer.

  • I like to write. I'm great at hooks and introductions but lose my desire soon after.

  • I tend to write in third person, but try switching it up from time to time just for fun. I say that I like writing short stories because I tend to burn out when writing the longer ones, but a lot of the time weather I like it or not my stories tend to end up 20+ pages long. I write whatever inspired me to write at the moment. I'm completely random when it comes to making stories, so you never now what you'll get.

So, soooo busy... I've been meaning to work on this one since the summer... For this particular story: 1) Sci fi, my stab at the theme of "Why haven't we made alien contact yet?" and the classic "what is humanity?" theme (though I guess you could say that EVERY sci fi contains that theme) 2) Mixture of both. Told from first person perspective of an omnipotent and third person for the normal main character. 3) Novel length for me.

I've been writing for the last two years. I usually ened up hating what I am writing and deleting the file on my computer. I always carry around a tiny note pad and pen incase an awesome idea pops into my head randomly. I've asked a couple of questions in the mailsack about writing and they've been answered by the writers at Bungie. I might go an look for them. I took a creative writing class this semester and it more or less made me hate writing, turned something I loved into something that I had to do. I don't understand how people are authors of their career.

        • Don't leave us hanging, OP. Tell us what the story is about.

          • I've been writing for years. I've had poems published when I was a kid. At the moment, I have finished a short story and am in the middle of writing a novel, the first of a series. I mostly write third person, although I wrote a quick horror story told in the second person as well as a couple of first person shorts that I vaguely remember.

            • Kind of. The thing is, I basically have three different stories bouncing around my head, undeveloped. The thing is, my mind bounces between all three, so nothing gets developed. I only have about four characters developed. Suffice to say, I will not be writing these.

              • I tend to shoot for third-person narration but focalised on a central protagonist, i.e. reporting all that they understand. Not necessarily what is true.

              • A first person story is written as if you are the main character. A third person story is written as if you are an observer of the events in the story, or essentially a camera over the shoulder. It might hear the thoughts of one or more characters. A second person narrative is a plot where the story is told as if YOU are the main character in the story, but since the only way to refer to it is by saying "you" all the time, it would get dull pretty fast in conventional literature.
