It's better in a lot of ways. First, you don't xurn it. Second, it can cause DoT when upgraded. Finally, it has a better noise. (animation on tlw is better though) I'm ready for the hate.
Edit:bought tlw, and it's impressive.

Thorn can two shot and the lingering dot will kill you while the last word can two shot ONLY with hip fire- otherwise it needs three shots. Technically thorn is better. The last word kills you faster on paper only because thorns kill is a lingering one but in reality they are both very similar.
