As much fun as it is to see your friend get his second or third Gjallerhorn, or hear about these lucky individuals who get four or five exotics a week, or even multiples within a single raid, I am pretty frustrated with the RNG.
The worst is that there is nothing you can do to actually earn (most) exotics, and little that you can do to increase any likelihood that they will drop. You just have to get really lucky.
Well I am apparently not a very lucky person. I regularly run raids, complete nightfalls, play in the Crucible, finish ROC strikes, open chests, and do absolutely everything (short of playing 17 hours a day) that I can to get an exotic to drop. And I do it on multiple characters.
Despite all of this, and having played for months, I have never been fortunate enough to receive an exotic weapon drop. The only way that I have been able to get exotic gear into my arsenal (aside from the Vanguard mentor missives) is to do the weekly strikes, accumulate strange coins, and buy exotics from Xur.
It would be nice if more exotic weapons were at least offered through bounties like the Vanguard Mentor Missives.
Aside from the fact that you gain additional story content from the bounties, I have found that I gain a greater appreciation for the what makes the weapon an exotic piece and how its history fits in with the rest of the Destiny universe. Additionally, I know that I earned that weapon. The bounty may have been randomly dropped, but I still had to complete it to claim my trophy at the end.
RNG by comparison is incredibly unsatisfying. So you run through the raid, open the chests, take out the enemies, go through the motions -and you get nothing for it. Plus you are no closer to getting anything. You run it and hope to get lucky, just like you did last week, and the week before.
Anyway, sorry for the length of the post but there it is. More exotics should be made available through the Vanguard Mentor Missives. It would be a good way to inject more story content into the game and would flush out the exotics' history and personality.

At least you can run raids. I can't even do that, since I live and work in Asia and don't speak the local languages. Have Destiny on PS3 and friends are one 360. Tried the raid group site, but nothing found, so I said -blam!-ing it. It's not in my life plan. Just hope for a drop in ROC, which there is no hope of.
