It makes it less boring when you're capping out marks for the week.

I run them solo so it will be a little different for me but I am going to try it later tonight.

You will be carrying two people instead of one but it can be done.

Challanges are good. It breeds better play in my opinion. Question though. Do you put on the lower gear before you select the strike and if so which level do you select?

I put the gear on before I hit "Launch". You can only be 3 levels below or else you won't be able to launch. If you go lower than 3 levels while searching you will get kicked to orbit. The game matches you with people around your light level, that's why it only matters while searching.
