Other than The Lord of The Rings, what is some good fantasy literature?
Posted by: li archangel il I'm personally a huge fan of the Wheel of Time series. It's an amazing story that really builds on itself and just keeps you plain entertained throughout it. A close second is A Song of Ice and Fire, followed by the Sword of Truth series.
It seems I have my work cut out for me. But I'm putting Wheel of Time on the to-read-list too.
Posted by: Bouncer7 Oh and I saw someone say Enders Game. AWESOME book. I have only read that one and Enders Shadow and I can say they are a great read
Ender's Game seems more like Sci-Fi to me.
Posted by: masterdrone A Song of Ice and Fire?
Made me happy to see this as the first reply. This is a great series, though not intended for a younger audience. It gets very explicit at times. Great series.
Posted by: masterdrone A Song of Ice and Fire?
This without question. uhm my little cousins got me a book last year called Lord of Lies. It wasn't the first in the series but it was an alright book if you want to look into it. Oh and I saw someone say Enders Game. AWESOME book. I have only read that one and Enders Shadow and I can say they are a great read [Edited on 12.06.2012 5:53 PM PST]
Posted by: jgman676
Posted by: Endoterrik 13 Deathgate Cycle
and Dragonlance.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Dragonlance earlier. I gather from previous posts that you're primarily looking for magic and monster type books, but I haven't read any that haven't already been listed multiple times. So if you're interested in other kinds of fiction, I HIGHLY recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy, by Patrick Ness.
Posted by: Big Boy1229
Posted by: xAT 117x Personally for me the best fantasy literature out there is written by David Eddings. I have every single book he has ever written (about 20 or so) and I've read them all at least 3/4 times. Despite this I have never met anyone who has even heard of him, maybe it isn't for everyone, but it contains brilliant writing, witty, funny and charming dialogue, gritty action, and compelling stories. My favourite book ever (this one), I would recommend to everyone in this thread. It is crazy good.
Just finished rereading The Belgariad for the umpteenth time, I have to take a break once in a while as their style (he and his wife pretty much co-write every book together) gets on my nerves at times especially in the Malloreon. Some all time great characters of fantasy though like Silk, Belgarath and (for me) Sadi.
Yes! The Belgariad and The Mallorean are the best series I have ever read. I just love them that much. I was reading through all these replies and was surprised that no one had mentioned these great series yet, so I am happy to find some fellow fans among us. There hasn't been a single thing I've read from Eddings that hasn't captivated me. If you want some great fantasy, give The Belgariad series a try. If you are sucked in immediately then I don't know what will get you!

Eender's game, and all the subsequent books following it.

Inheritance Cycle Harry Potter

The Witcher short stories are a good read, not as intense as LotR or Song of Fire and Ice, but good nonetheless.

Noted. :-)
Posted by: Xd00999 I'm going to plug Discworld again, because it deserves it. Discworld is a parody of all sorts of genres, and other times, plays the genre straight but with a unique twist. It is roughly split into a bunch of sub series, each starring a particular group of characters. For example, there is the Death series, which stars the remarkably like able Death and his family, while the Wizards series follows the stories of the Wizards of the Unseen University. Each book usually has a central theme or topic it deals with. Snuff is about racial prejudices and what measure a person is worth, while also journeying through the topics of slavery and detective fiction. Going Postal is a story of how the Post Office must change to fit the world, while also showing the redemption of a criminal. My personal favourite is Reaper Man, a story about what it means to be human and why compassion is necessary, even for Death. There is a huge amount of books in the series, enough that one will likely deal with a topic you are interested in. I highly recommend getting them.

Posted by: Sacred Flea
Posted by: masterdrone A Song of Ice and Fire?

Aye. When you say fantasy, do you include sci-fi/alternative history? Because anything by Phillip K. Dick is fantastic.
