How would you compare smartphone users to gamers?

Now I realize this is a generalization, but I was thinking about this today and I think it's a valid comparison. Outliers, of course, are not included. To me, I think iPhone users are like casual gamers. Casual gamers pick up a game like Halo, play it, have a great time with it, but don't care much about the nuts and bolts. Everything works when they turn it on, they enjoy themselves, and they feel like they are part of a larger mainstream culture. And so they are highly likely to become "fans" and loyally purchase the next version when it comes out without complaint or second thought, regardless of quality or improvements. Android users are like hardcore gamers who "play for fun." Kind of like brigadiers or colonels in Halo. They are more into the technicalities and specifications, and they generally want to be in the top third (approximately) when it comes to efficiency and equipment, but they still want to be able to relate to their more casual friends without seeming uppity. They'll use a particular product when it meets their demands, but if something better comes along, they won't hesitate to move on -- as long as most of their friends do, too. Windows Phone users are like gamers who play at the highest levels. "Smartphone 50s," if you will. They are the innovators who will invent new techniques and better ways of doing things, and will only use the highest-quality products to accomplish this end. They pride themselves not on engaging in a way that fits in with other people's products, but rather that outperforms them. These users will generally try to explain why their way is better, backing it up with evidence rather than emotion, even when those arguments fall upon deaf ears. They pave the way for others who follow in their footsteps, but remain a small, segmented group, often shunned by the majority. At least, that's how I see it. Once again, I know there are outliers both in terms of smartphone users and gaming. But in general, what are your thoughts on this interesting analogy?

 • smartphoners are NOT gamers.. definition- Historically, the term "gamer" usually referred to someone who played role-playing games and wargames. Since they became very popular, the term has included players of video games. i dont see smartphoners as gamers

 • I had a Windows phone and it is pretty far from superior. I like to think of them in another light. The phone was so frustrating within the first week I bought an Iphone4. The apps were laughable, and not to mention you have to have a wlid linked to the phone which adds all of your email contacts into your phone contacts. Who wants that?

I have one too (company issues, but not MS).
lol But I actually do like the categories you broke down the smart phone users into. I think it corresponds well. Problem is, what do flip phone (dumb phone) users relate to in the gaming realm?
tabletop gamers.
:D
D&D ftw.
Amen to that. I think that's flipped. Table top gamers have the imagination that regular gamers don't need to use when gaming. Also, 2 ninjas in one thread? *runs*

 •
Posted by: T1d3 that is the other thing though, I don't want to be hard core or casual, I want to be the gamer who can enjoy a game, be competitive but not flip -blam!- if he loses
Being hardcore doesn't mean you flip -blam!-. Its just that hardcore players are more likely to do so. It goes sorta like this... All the people who flip -blam!- after losing are hardcore gamers. Not all hardcore gamers flip -blam!-.

 • To think, that if anyone but a ninja posted this, everyone would be calling him an idiot, or saying tl;dr OT: I have an android phone and I kind of fit into that category, large generalizations are bound to have some similarities to people, but not identify them completely, which I'm sure you've accounted for.

To me I see it as Casual- Pick ups the game plays it for a month without really caring about anything. Doesn't care at all. Hardcore- Cares about gaming. Whether it be single-player or multiplayer. •
Posted by: Unit 076
Posted by: T1d3 why isn't there an in-between stage for someone like me?
Just "gamer" maybe? Too competitive is just stupid, casuals are a bit annoying since sometimes they just jumping on bandwagon
People tell me I am casual when it comes to the Elder Scrolls Series because Skyrim was my first one. But people don't seem to realize that I was also 8 or 9 when Oblivion came out and I wasn't allowed to play rated M games. so a lot of times a game serious is a lot older than the kid is. I don't get it honestly. I am a die hard Halo fan, yet people consider me casual.

 • I hate this competitive vs. casual gamer bull-blam!-. I have played Halo since the very beginning, I get every game, but I have never gotten to 50. I love to win and I'm very competitive yet if I lose I don't get pissed and let it ruin my day. why isn't there an in-between stage for someone like me?

 • I wouldn't. I know multiple "hardcore" gamers that use iphones, and plenty of casuals that use Windows or Androids. All these stereotyped "sheeples", etc are just people trying to hop on a hate/band wagon and feel better about themselves. Sincerely, Someone who doesn't give a damn what phone you have.
