Marcus Lehto returns to Bungie!

http://blog.marcuslehto.com/ Now I can sleep soundly at night. The master mind behind all things Halo is now back at Bungie working on the new project. One of the most Grizzled amongst the Ancients, he was one of the few to work and create Halo from day one of the project back in 1997. And now he is back to doing it again on the new IP. All I have to say is I'm glad he is back. [Edited on 01.22.2012 10:11 AM PST]

 • I dunno who Jonty is, but Jonty is a funny chap. Also I'm too lazy to comment on the blog itself. [Edited on 01.25.2012 1:28 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: GhostLink2401 After Reach, I'm not holding my breath too hard. BUT, Maybe a fresh IP is just what Bungie needs.
I think you're right, Bungie are good at making *new* games/universes, but improving on old ones ain't their thing really. To much rules, cannon, previous games not to mention "been there, done that". Everyone needs a change of environment now and then, especially game devs, otherwise you'll just see them same thing over and over again (CoD) or bad decisions made just to make it feel new (Reach). After Reach I'm sceptic, but I'll give it a fair chance, to prove that when bungie are "free" from rules, cannon and lore, they can once again make great games (that's not Shadowrun/Crysis/CoD 1,5) that are new and innovative ^^

 • Huh, pretty neat, actually. I liked his vision for Reach, regardless of how the product itself turned out.

 • He's obviously not working on a Bungie IP. He'd be working on his own IP through the Aerospace program.

 • Wohoo! One of the Grizzled Ancients returns is exciting news. Marcus had such a powerful hand in making Halo: CE. Was really sad when he left. Hearing him return is awesome. I hope Brian Jarrard returns too. Soon.

 •
Posted by: Switchfoot4
Posted by: Jujubes I am glad he's back too, but if you read carefully he does not specify what IP he's working on. Bungie has several (at least) IP's running at one time if you consider Crimson, the current new universe, and the fact that they have talked in the past bout having lots of ideas they want to pursue but that they were locked into Halo for forever. It sounds more like He and Tung have something to explore and round out before they make an official start to it with a team.
Not to be a smartass, but I don't think anyone from Bungie has specified what IP they are working on.
That's not smart-ass at all. I agree. I would find it hard to believe that they really constrain themselves to one or two ideas studio-wide. One of the hard things about working with creative people is keeping them targeted on a small suite of ideas that they can go bananas with while letting them run free and not feel like they're imprisoned. If you squash that creativity OR don't help them manage it things go horribly, horribly wrong. Hence my assumption that they maintain a healthy amount of cool stuff while not letting creative brain-barf occur rampantly. [Edited on 01.24.2012 12:08 PM PST]

I don't consider Crimson to be a Bungie IP. They aren't really developing anything for it, just managing and publishing the game via Bungie Aerospace. But really it could just be misinterpreted wording. He does in fact say that he is working on a "brand new IP." But what is considered "brand new." Is that an IP that he started 3 days ago or an IP that has yet to have a game released for. And he talks about how Joe Tung and him are going to "start the construction of a brand new team and project." But from my understanding, new projects and teams can be formed and work on the same title. For example, Marcus Lehto talked on the podcast how they created a team in Halo: Reach for a water level in which the spartans could ride in a boat. It was in prototyping for about 6 months and got cut. In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if he started working on a new IP (as in today being his first day back to Bungie). It wasn't uncommon at all back in the old days of Bungie. They started a few projects right after the release of Myth: TFL. Those projects being Oni, Myth II, and Halo. But I'm just not a 100% convinced that he means a completely different project than what a majority of the people at Bungie are working on.

There could be 2 IPs being made but I think the current focus is probably on 1 project. [Edited on 01.23.2012 11:52 AM PST]
