I'm level 14 and so far I've collected 184 spinmetal mostly from chests and it looks like Helium Cores will be collecting in the same way as well. My question is what is it used for and is there a way to keep it from becoming a massive pile of something you don't use? Should I stop looking for chests to find green and blue items and just buy stuff at the weaponmaster and Vanguard? It will cut down on $ collecting to buy stuff if I do. This makes no sense to me.

Buy stuff from the vanguard. You'll get the best gear from the vanguard, daily challenges etc and continuing on with the story missions. It's good to stockpile the mats! Plan ahead and see what mats your gear will need to upgrade.

It's used exclusively for leveling gear. 184 will last you a while but you can never really have too much. Don't waste your time on chests if gear is what you are looking for. Get to 20, beat the game. While doing that do as many bounties as you can to get your vanguard rep up to buy that gear.

you used to be able to sell it for vender reputation, but for some reason, they stopped it. MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. YOU HAVE TO DISSCARD NOW TO MAKE ROOM IN YOUR INVENTORY.

Upgrading gear will require planetary materials like spinmetal and helium. I wouldn't sweat about having a few hundred yet, as you'll likely use them when you hit level 20 and start buying tower vendor gear.

Spinmetal and other mats are used to upgrade your weapons. Keep stockpiling them, you will eventually use it.
