All pre-DLC gear now obsolete?

I bought the DLC and am now at lvl 31. I had a full set of upgraded VoG raid gear prior to that. But I might as well dismantle it all. I'm not upset about that. Bit disheartened that I spent weeks and weeks getting to that point though.. But our weapons. Take Fatebringer for example, only able to get it on HM. Excellent gun. This is usually my primary no matter the fight. But sooner or later I'll want to be doing 331 damage, not 300. So once we reach that point, all of our old legendary weapons will be obsolete. I understand that with the dlc should come new content, new weapons and gear, but isn't it just a bit much of a bad move to make everyone's pre crota gear useless?

  • Reason the light leveling system needs to go away. Armor should be wanted for stat bonuses or looks. Not because you need it to level.

    • I agree on this. Its quite annoying that other players are able to use Vanguard armor to reach light 31, while i sit here in almost full VoG gear, which I've spent countless hours on getting. I don't like to see a player who's just become level 20 for the first time, and can get to level 31 without having to do the Vault of Glass. Its really unnecessary to get a group and finish it. Its only worth it for the Vex and other raid weapons. Players with DLC can just do the Crota's End, however players like me who don't have the expansion think this is a problem. At least make Vanguard, Dead Orbit, ETC armor go up to light level 30, then make the VoG armor go to 31, because then it would level out the playing field; meaning you get faction armor to go fight in the VoG with better gear than just your plain light 27 stuff, and you would benefit from it.

      • Crota's End is useless if you think about it since House of Wolves will have better armor, so I guess stay at level 20

      • Someone explained this to me and I thought it was actually a good point. We, as gamers, are a lazy bunch. We find those couple guns we love and we would happily keep and upgrade them forever, removing a part of the game that is important, discovering new tools and adapting to them. By introducing an obsolescence it forces us to evolve to meet new challenges (my faithful gun is now a paper weight) like learning a different weapons system. I took this explanation and adapted a real-world scenario. Americans in WWI loved their 1913 Springfield bolt action rifles. When WWII came around everyone was forced to adapt to the "newer and better" Garand. The Marines didn't agree with this move and kept their 1913 because they loved them, and ultimately that was a not a smart move. After WWII the M14 was introduced and many in the military felt it was a bad thing because it introduced more ammunition which could lead to american soldiers not aiming as much as just "spraying and praying." In Vietnam the M16 was introduced and many were against this space-age weapon because the rounds were smaller, the weapon was made of aluminum and plastic and not steel and wood. It also introduced a full-auto and a larger magazine which furthered that "spray and pray" mentality that american military command were concerned about. In the end, weapons and armor MUST evolve. New stuff is ALWAYS around the corner, and those new things will render old hardware obsolete. The military doesn't wear flak vests anymore, we have kevlar body armor now. They don't shoot bolt action large caliber guns, they shoot small caliber semi-auto rifles. We must understand that as much as we love our guns, there is a degree of laziness and familiarity involved, and in war (which our Guardians are very much at war), those things are sacrificed in order to produce items that are more likely to save our lives. Armor with more damage ratings and weapons with higher attack ratings do that.

        • And that's why they'll keep selling half-assed DLCs; because you feel the need to have the new stuff because the old stuff is rendered useless.

        • I find it funny when people complain about the old raid gear being "worthless" and mention fatebringer. That is still my go to primary or VoC. Until I get primaries with elemental damage, how are they worthless? I make captains and Knights my bitch with fatebringer. Even shielded skanks when arc burn is on. I switch to VoC for wizards and skanks or pull out IB. I just dismantled my 300 damage IB since my new one does about 50 more non crit damage per additional 10 damage. On crits it will make a difference, and having a higher damage fatebringer would be awesome. But for now it is far from worthless. Is there any new arc primary that can keep up with it? How about VoC?

        • Basically yes, and it's pretty easy to see a few flaws in their system. #1, there is only 1 set of armor to get you to max level per class, this is silly. There should be 3 sets of armor per class, and each should benefit a specific subclass (assuming the third subclass is coming out. You play the raid or I would even say nightfall, you get 10 wins in a row in crucible, etc... make those situations when you CAN get a piece of top level armor per an RNG value. But the fun begins when you are trying to get a matched set of armor for your favorite subclass, not only do you get all the perks associated with that specific armor set, but you also get an extra light level bump for having a matching set of armor. The matching set level boost should apply to any armor set BTW, it's such a common concept in an RPG that I'm surprised Bungie overlooked it as a game mechanic. Now you would have a situation where people are still grinding, and maybe they get an armor drop but decide to not level that up because they don't want to waste the shards because it's not their preferred class. I mean you could mismatch your set and get to 32, but you could also wait for a matched set and get to 33. Also it would help if the damage gaps weren't quite as high when fighting leveled opponents, and there should also be a damage boost when fighting lower leveled opponents, at least some. that would really make it beneficial to get that high level. Right now, anything over a level 30 is utterly useless unless you are doing a raid. (aside from the armor perks and increased armor stat)

            • Hi, In this type of game (online RPGs) there has to be a system where gear level increases as you progress through DLCs/ expansions. Those of us that have played online RPGs before will be used to this and accept it as part of the ethos of the game. We are after all loot scavengers, searching for better weapons, upgrades, armour to improve our stats. It's the drug that keeps us coming back for more. If you dont want to subscribe to this addiction then this game, and others like it, probably aren't for you. I quite enjoy the fact that I have to keep changing guns. I was opposed to hand cannons in the past but I got a Hawkmoon drop the other day and now I love it. Precision damage all the way.

I keep thinking the designers of Destiny don't have a clue and that worries me. The solution to this issue is as simple as adding RE-FORGE to the tower gunsmith. Again, from a design perspective, it's not rocket science to fix this issue. Raid weapons are special and the gunsmith's back story makes him ideal to be a person who can hand out a side quest to allow you to re-forge your Raid obtained weapons each time a new DLC arrives. This would allow players who have a goto gun to have it follow them through the game. It fits into the legend and lore of the game perfectly too because it suggests that you can eventually have a gun like "The Last Word" that you forged through many adventures. Here is a brief example of how I would have handled things. 1. The new DLC drops and you notice an exclamation mark over the gunsmith. 2. You go over to him and he has a quest available called something like "Mistakes of the past" 3. You grab it and it starts a small questline about how he once reforged a gun for a guy named Jaren and maybe it's time to help another friend (meaning you) face the coming dark. He explains that only special weapons that are marked by a guardians light can be reforged. 4. You get a multi-part bounty to upgrade one of your raid guns. It cost's a 8000 glimmer and whatever item you get from the quest plus a visit to Xur for one of the items. It has NO CRUCIBLE component! You need to do this for every raid gun you wish to upgrade and the gun must be equipped when you visit the gunsmith for the new reforge bounty to appear. One limit I would put on this reforge would be that you can only have one Re-forged Raid weapon equipped at a time as these weapons would be on par with an exotic after reforge. Final edit: Given the enemy type you face in raids and DLC missions seems to differ from one another I would likely also Add a new column in the upgrade list to allow for switching between Hive Extra Damage, Oracle Disruptor and Fallen Extra Damage. This would work in exactly the same way as the MurMur arc/solar switch. Allowing those dedicated players to always feel they had the tools for the job and that they had forged them to their own spec and preferences i.e. you like auto rifles then your Reforged Atheon's (now called something like Penhalion Wolfe's Epilogue" ) would be good to go no matter the situation. Maybe even add the ability to choose a name for the gun at re-forge (from a set list otherwise we all know the type of names we'll be seeing "Penhalion Wolfe's Wonder Shlong" for example!)

                • It's only obsolete if you play PvE. Giving us the option to level our old guns to the current max was apparently to much, or they solved the "too small vault" problems by making the old stuff obsolete. Big fail bungle

                • I think that raid acquired weapons and armour should be fully upgradeable for the next DLC and that DLC only. So vanilla upgrades top TDB. TDB weaps/armour can be upgraded for HoWolves. Raid gear is special, and shouldn't be made redundant quite so quickly. FYI - i actually have none of the above but still think they shouldnt be made redundant

                  • What would be nice is a quest line involving the otherwise useless gunsmith that would give us a chance to upgrade our legendary guns much like Xur and exotics.

                    • The problem is, that's kind of the point. You hit max level with some really killer gear And then it gets cycled out for the new stuff. Unfortunately in a game like this is doesn't feel right, since instead of getting a whole new game to experience every expansion, we get about 2 hours worth of content and all of our gear turned to shit that we have to upgrade all over again:P

                      • Personally, I don't think so. If that were the case, what would be the point of running Crota's end at all? MMO-style games (not calling Destiny an MMO, but it has similarities) do this all the time. It sucks, but at the same time, if you aren't playing to get new and upgraded loot, what's the point of playing? That's why I put Destiny down for so long, save Raid nights, after we had VoG Hard mode on farm.

They should update the raid weapons attack stats but leaving the armour where it is is fine, they want you to play crotas end for its gear not vog
