PSA: Don't quit Iron Banner matches.
TL;DR: leaving Iron Banner matches before the game ends will slow down your reputation gain.

I was in a brief conversation on Bungie.net with someone who believed that even with medallions added to the event, it was still better to quit a match if looked like he was likely to lose. Playing last night, I ran into at least two people last night (out of ten matches) who agreed. So here's why that's a bad idea.
[u](I) Mechanics[/u]
When you lose a match, you don't gain any Iron Banner reputation (although you do still get the usual +10 Crucible rep and +2 marks), but you do get an Iron Banner Medallion. You can hold up to 5 Medallions at a time. When you win a match, you gain IB rep [i]and[/i] every Medallion in your inventory is "redeemed" for additional IB rep.
A win is worth 50 reputation, plus 40 reputation per Medallion redeemed by the win.

The exact answer to whether or not it speeds your reputation gain to quit matches is more complicated than you might think, and I'm not going to go into it in detail (it's a lot of fairly boring algebra). The important bit, though, is that in order to make quitting matches worthwhile two unlikely things have to be true:
* You have to be able to correctly identify matches you'll win or lose. If you're wrong about this (that is, if you leave some matches that your team later wins), it becomes very difficult to match the rep gain of someone who just sticks it out.
* The time you spend in matches you quit [i]plus[/i] the time you spend in matchmaking has to be less than about 22% of the length of a full match. (The exact ratio varies depending on your win rate and the number of games you play.)
Now we'll convert that percentage to some real-world values. Suppose an average IB match lasts 10 minutes; if you spend longer than about 130 seconds figuring out whether you'll win or lose (and remember, you have to do this accurately!) [i]and[/i] getting matched into your next game, then [b]quitting matches will slow your reputation gain[/b]. Can we all agree that this is a bad idea?

Saves so much time compared to trying to slug out wins or carrying teams you just die a lot and still lose. When players with no understanding of the game keep trying to take the 3rd point and flipping it so you lose the good spawn when you are already down 6k to 3k. Then just leave there is no point in staying. I never left a close match but realized there are way to many pve only people which no knowledge of how to control spawn points, better obj to defend, etc. So yeah preach on but loading in, playing a bit, realizing your team is terrible, leaving, loading in to new match takes about 3 minutes. Winning a match gets me well over 100 rep in some cases so i am not going to sit on a bad team and spend 15 minutes losing and gettig no rep

Or play with a idiot who gets heavy ammo with our whole team running at him. Answer is you dont. Freedom to play your way and leave if your team is -blam!-ing idiots. Which is often.

3 Repliesif im ever in a game where my team mates leave and i determine it to be a loss by objective, i turn it into my focus onto my k/d and attempt to kill as many people as i can and not focus on the control points anymore. however my goal is to not ever see more then 2 medallions in my inventory. but even then, thats based off of luck of the draw when matchmaking gives me 5 special eds to work with.

13 RepliesIt's pretty annoying when everyone quits against my team and then we're stuck 6v1'ing some kid that wants his Medallion. Usually the new join in progress system solves that but we had one game where it gave the other team nobody for 75% of the match. Couldn't they just give nothing for losing and make you lose rep for quitting early? It can't be hard for Bungie to recognise quitters from people who get error codes.

well i think you also forget about the shaders and emblem bonus points. each match with all attributes on if you participated in the first IB gets you 73 points per win. i detest people who quit. because those are the real losers. came into a match where we were down by 6000 points and manage to win the game with coordination and not just running and gunning be mere tactics. if you quit i say yes this should affect your ability to gain more rep. this is a good idea. if you go to orbit while inside an IB match then you sir are a sore looser and you should get all that encompass the actions of leaving a match.

4 RepliesThey should honestly do something about the quitting, it's still happening quite a lot. It's near impossible to join a game from the start, at least for me. They should just disable the damn leave match option, force them to have to close the game to have to quit a match, the more time it eats to get back to the next game, the less likely they'll quit. Then again, they COULD just have quit bans.

You'll win at least once every 5 games. Those loses will all count as a win. No matter what your level is going to sky rocket. Just keep playing people!!

It just pisses me off if I'm so overwhelmed that I'm constantly in a situation where I'm shooting a guy and have two others shooting me from the flanks. In those extremes, fk the rep, I'm out.

1 ReplyMost of the matches I have been in have been fun or entertaining. You can tell right away if you have a solid team. I'm not very good at pvp but I will always try to capture points and hold them. KDR doesn't play into my mind since I am not really good at killing the other team as my team mates are so I do what I can. Some games have been so close and even back and forth by a couple thousand points. It's always worth it to me to stick around until the end.

I don't mind quitters.......I was on a team last night that was down 10k to 2k. 3 people left, 3 joined, and we ended up winning. More than likely the ones quitting are the reason we are losing anyways.

Can't really "quit" if someone gets hit with error codes. Had one game where 3 of our teams ended up kicked from servers, one of which was on our fireteam. One left after they realized there were only 3 of us. Two ended up kicked on their team. The irony is the ones kicked mainly had a "good" connection according to the game...

I got "BOARed" in the middle of an IB match. Does that have the same effect as quitting a game?

Odds are, you [i]will[/i] win in that timeframe, so keep on truckin', guardians! I'm not the greatest in pvp, and the most medallions I've held at once were two or three. So having the max at five is reasonable.
