Yeah, I'd love to see it operate like most games with gear upgrading - have the option to toggle the helmet ON/OFF, but keep the stats regardless. This tiny feature would be HUGE in showing the variety of custom made characters and attention to detail on the character models. Right now, it doesn't matter how much time you spend in character creation, everyone looks the same in battle and your character does not feel unique... unless you're in the tower...walking.... alone.
