Thank you Destiny community...

I'll try to keep this short. I have never done the raid. I've always been the type of person that stays relatively quiet when meeting new people. People often think I'm a jerk because I stay quiet throughout a conversation. Naturally, I didn't want to complete the raid because the thought of meeting & organizing with different people made me anxious. A shy guy like me would feel even worse when he brings his team down for not knowing how to do the raid. Then came the raid "bug" fix, with Atheon randomly teleporting guardians at the last section. That fix did it. I would never do this raid. After seeing posts on this forum about people refusing to help noobs like myself, I figured it was deservedly so. If I had done the raid before the fix, I wouldn't be a hindrance to my teammates. Flashback to yesterday. I'm here on the forums and reply to a post about user locales (where you live). I live in Oklahoma City, USA and find some other people who live in the same state. I made some local friends! Great! Always nice to see some people you can call Okla"homies" (see what I did there? :D) That night, I log on and complete the heroic daily mission. Easy enough. Then I get an invite from one of my new found friends. We start talking and I ask him what the plan is. He says, "We're gonna do the raid!" "Eff..." I think to myself. "Well, new friend... I've never done the raid..." His response? "... No problem! We'll get this done." He gets a team assembled and I nervously wait to see & gauge the reactions to having some new guy on their team. Their response? Essentially the same thing, "no problem, let's do this". Okay, I'm feeling a little confident now. We do the raid on normal difficulty from beginning to end. Did I suck it up during the raid? Hell yeah I did. I died more times than I would've liked, but the team would always come back for me. They'd revive me, I'd say "sorry" and they'd respond with "no problem" every time. This is all while laughing and just messing around (the jump puzzle in particular brought many laughs for me). Throughout the raid, they'd wait patiently for me to catch up to them, guide me to chests and teach me tricks on the way to Atheon. We finally took down Atheon (I say "we" but it was basically them) and celebrated with many a cyber high five. I told them thanks for their patience with me and they acted like it was nothing, which made the experience even more awesome. With all that said, I just want to thank these forums and this community for being awesome. Despite the few downers that sometimes make these forums frustrating, there are even more like-minded and helpful guardians who just like to play as a team. I would not have met these cool peeps had it not been for these forums, so thanks again. I'm sorry I didn't keep it short. Edited for grammar. Also, it's amazing to see such kind and helpful people on this thread. You're what makes this game so fun.

  • I hate it when people tell me I need experience for Kingsfall, I got TTK in late september, so I had some cathing up to do. Im 290 light, so I am a suitable level for the raid, but in order to get better I need help on the new stuff. People fail to communicate with me on what to do at certain parts, because there ego of "beating oryx 15 times" leads them to believe everyone knows how to do the raid This. Sucks.

Raiding has been some of my best experiences with this game and I've made some great friends through it. I'm glad you too have gotten that solid camaraderie and hope those team friendships continue for you too!

Great story. I am a lot like you. Additionally, Destiny is the first game I have ever played in multiplayer/coop. The thought of hooking up with strangers has intimidated me, because I was not very skilled at FPS games, though I love them, I am a slow, cautious plodder. I have only done the weekly heroic once with a guy who sent me a friend request, and a couple of tigers with the same guy, who was very helpful and patient with me. I have done the tigers with matchmaking a bunch of times, and, in general have been impressed with the players I have been teamed with. I always try to contribute, and also try to match my style (kill everything vs. speed to the boss) to what the other two players are doing. I have been invited to do the VOG, but declined, as 1. I did not think my skill was up to it and 2. I needed better weapons. Now, I finally have specials and heavies that cover all 3 elements and are legendary or exotic, have learned a lot about most of the strikes so I usually know where to go and what to expect, and feel like I am starting to contribute more. As for VOG, I feel like I still need to improve my skills and get a few more good weapons, and get them leveled up, before I attempt to do it. Plus, there is always that haunting feeling that I will be a burden to my teammates and/or I will end up with some unforgiving screamers. That is just something I do not feel comfortable about. I have to say that the responses to this post are very encouraging, and have kindled interest in eventually doing the vault.

          • Started a new topic: Raid

          • Yeah I'm lucky I have friends playing and was reluctant to do the raid but wanted to do it...it was awesome man and every week I look forward to raiding with them and some new friends from sending random invites in the tower I try to help out the new guys and have them be my "raid buddy" but some of my friends take it way to serious especially at Atheon when we have to completely wipe for many reasons...but I just tell them that it took them awhile to get a feel for doing it and to just calm down...but we always explain the next area before we continue on and it really helps out that way

Great to see a positive thread like this. My experience has been really good with the communal aspects of this game up until last night. A friend and I were running tiger strikes and we got teamed up with a third player eventually who took off on his sparrow racing through as fast as he could (no problem his choice). When we finally get caught up minutes later he starts shooting at me (A bit annoying) the three of us then clear the area and this guy goes and triggers the next phase without missing a beat leaving no time to look for ammo drops before the next wave comes rolling in on us. (Ok fine he obviously lacks any conscious for the team) once the next check point is cleared, me and my pal look around for ammo. When we finally catch up yet again and after reviving him he takes another shot and tries to melee me. (Hah ok he's being playful... I think) Fighting boss he dies again. Revive him again and again, then we finally beat the boss, at which point this guy starts coming at me with melee hits while I'm looking around for drops. So I start swinging back for the fun of it. We go back to orbit we get paired up with him again and me and my pal leave. Immediately following I get a message from the guy that's says "u r retarded". I get instantly heated thinking wait I was not the one shooting at u when u decided to rush through the strike dying multiple times by yourself. I revived u three times! If I choose to take my time with my homie how does that make me retarded? GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! Then I realized this could have been anybody (a chemically imbalanced 12 yr old, some poor guy with no tools or skills to cope with his life and whose in desperate need of an outlet for all of his rage.... Anybody! Anyway today and with the help of this thread I return to the positive side of things. After all it's just a game. Great post OP and sorry for the rant!

              • You're cool dude. I was just like you as were many others...I'd say almost all people struggled their first time around. I did! Now I'm boss and I make sure to treat people with respect (even though it's fun to laugh at jump mistakes particularly), just like I was treated with respect. Trust me, I've done the raid with some jerkholes by now, but for the majority, people are cool. Just make sure if you ever assemble a team of people and their is now someone else who is new, to treat him as you were treated. And laugh at him at the jump parts.... EURA OUT...

Your post gave me the confidence to get on reddit fireteams on Friday. Happened to find a Sherpa who was starting a fresh raid right when I would be getting home from work, and I messaged my interest. As soon as I signed on that night I get an invite from the Sherpa, which really surprised me. I join the party/fireteam and he's got another Sherpa (both level 30s) with him. 4 level 28 noobs (including myself) Long story short, these guys were awesome. Organized us into groups, patiently explained each phase before we started, and didn't scream at us when we did something stupid and caused a wipe. Amazing experience from start to finish. Not to mention I got raid boots and Corrective Measure :) and a ton of shards and energy This was all made possible by a mature member of the Destiny community that wanted nothing more than to pay his experience forward and give back to make the destiny experience better for everybody. I won't post his GT but he knows who he is. Thanks again for an amazing gaming experience!
