[ITT: Ideas for Destiny missions] Serious question!

How would you make Destiny's missions different? I'm only referring to story missions and patrols, not strikes, not raids, not pvp, not the story itself. I am purely asking about the missions. I've heard a lot of complaints about the missions being repetitive. Tell Bungie how you would change it! Background:
I've heard a lot of people complaining about how there are so many typical missions. Go to this door and defend while the ghost unlocks the door. Go to this area and kill this enemy to pick up certain things. Go this thing and let the ghost analyze it while you defend enemies. And so many people have called it repetitive and stupid but have provided no indication of how to make it different.
Please keep it civil. It is clear to me that Bungie either a) catered to a lower intelligence for the missions or b) didn't want to throw too much caution to the wind and go out on a limb. This is your place to tell them how far is too far. What makes a mission unique and what makes it repetitive? Edit: Cool stuff so far! -Missions involving vehicles -Missions where you have to use different major skills or gun classes, i.e., sniping missions, sneaking missions, stuff like that -Missions with Ketch or dropships moving and you have to go alongside it and shoot parts of the ship off. -Protect moving convoys -Complexity in general is a plus, might be something like a system of levers with Portal-style mechanics or Zelda-type switch timers. I'm sure we don't want to make Destiny a platformer, but these things sound like good ideas! -And... leprechauns...? Edit2: It sounds to be like in general, players are just looking for more motion. Something where your mission revolves around run-n-gun with a high priority target in motion around you keeping the scenery moving while you have an eliminate the target-style main mission. Hopefully we see some of this coming up! Keep adding stuff! Edit3: More and different AI. Instead of faceless rebel leaders getting their monkies to find scrap or bring about a new government, how about outposts, heavily armed with mechanics working on ships and new weaponry and armor, just for aesthetics of course. Patrols, missions, and even quests can be centered around faction outposts given the personality of each faction (thinking a shack near a bunch of broken down cars or ship for Dead Orbit (Skywatch?), an underground cave castle for New Monarchy (just past forgotton shores?), and a broken down graffiti-strewn building for FWC (the one near the loot cave, maybe?)). New ones could be introduced like Cryptarchs on Venus (the academy of course) or Iron Banner near the exclusion zone for mars. They could even be HQ's with a quartermaster and specific patrols and bounty-style missions. Possibly even instanced missions of hoard mode or something. In general more AI. Barren wastlelands have become cliched.

  • Building on your final Edit, I think it would be really cool if each Planet has its own sub-faction. Kinda like you have the FWC, New Monarchy and Dead Orbit in the Tower, these factions would be specific to the planets, and have their own domain within them. For example on Earth you get a faction that resembles something out of Mad Max and can get cool barbaric looking armours from them, and weapons that look like a bunch of random crap strapped together. On the Moon you would get a very sleek looking faction like something out of Covenant from Halo, where you can land that sleek, glass looking armour if you work with em long enough. On Mars you would get a cool faction where their armour essentially looks like it's made out of the local terrain (rocks, etc.), and they'd be excellent at stealth (to take on the much bigger Cabal). Etc. Etc. It would be even cooler if they had some kind of direct communication centre with the Tower, and a similair area in the Tower to represent comms with them (Maybe that door to the Left when you go down the stairs to the Vanguard?). It'd spice up the factions currently in the game, and hopefully they would add to the story. Maybe this is going too far.

  • I would like to see other AIs in the mission. To me what really got you involved in the world of Halo was seeing the marines and the ODST in the fight and struggling. It made me feel like the last hope of humanity, and without them the game would have been lackluster. I know this world is meant to be barren where gaurdians are the only ones who rome around outside the city, but looking at the grimoire theres all this other stuff of people outside the city, and other cities like Palamon. Why couldnt they have added things like little outposts which you need to defend in Patrols, shanty towns being defended by rogue AI guardians who desperately need your help in warding off local enemies, map bosses who spawn ontop of hills made of dead guardian helmets, local military maneuvers where guardians get pinned down and need help, etc. etc. A lot of these would probably be better suited to public events more so than patrols. Basically I want the cool world Bungie made to have the cool content it deserves without the need to even touch missions. I know this sort of changes the story, but I am not necessarily looking for a story here, instead the ability to create my own stories from the world. This world does not let you do that.

    • While your ghost is hacking, you have to protect your ghost from getting killed. If not reload last checkpoint. I'm surprised they didn't do stuff like that.

      • In general, more action-oriented missions would be nice. By this I mean missions where one is not just defending or searching for artifacts. Attacking enemy supply lines, fortifications, and troop movements for the sake of winning the wars we're engaged in. Not just hunting for relics of the golden age, which doesn't seem like a very good strategy for winning the 4 wars we're engaged in.

        • Puzzles. Vehicle battles. Team required missions. Space battles (with ships). Special weapons (kinda like sword of c rota mission) just more like that.

Public Events: Extractions: Protect a friendly extractor from enemies. Each extractor runs for about 1 minute, then changes location (almost like extraction teams). Pursuit: Pursue the enemies on vehicles. (Sparrows temporarily get turned into pikes). Escort: Escort the Cryptarch (Not the troll in the tower) through checkpoints. Missions: Spy: Sneak through the enemy lines and extract data. Skull for this would be "Shadow". Being seen results in boot to orbit (akin to Nightfall).

        • Here's what I'd like to see. You start of the mission in the cosmodome looking for a specific fallen target, let's say a captain. From him you get a com-link which you have to take to a certain location so you can call down a skiff. Once the skiff arrives, you need to take out its crew and commandeer it. You then take it up to a ketch currently in orbit. Once on the ketch, you need to make your way through to the engine room and sabotage the engines. As the engine goes critical you need to abandon the ketch (the idea at this point is that if you remained on the ketch, your body could be lost and your ghost couldn't revive you, whereas falling from orbit would certainly kill you, but your body could be recovered and revived) As you fall you're surrounded by falling debris from the destroyed ketch which you must try to evade or destroy until you ultimately crash down on the surface.

I think they could take a lot of pages from the Halo story mission designs. The entire finale mission was driving a Warthog as the place was crumbling around you, which was cool. They had the twist of playing as the Arbiter in Halo 2. Banshee dog fight missions. Missions where you blew stuff up riding around in Scorpions. The sniping mission of Truth and Reconciliation. Stuff like that. The only mission in Destiny where they sort of mixed things up was the Sword of Crota.

            • Only complaint about story missions i have is that all the classes start the same, would have been cool to have different first mission for each class. There really isn't much to do to story mode because its an FPS, you are supposed to shoot stuff. For patrol, i would put more helium on the moon, and put more of other things on other planets, oh and more helium everything uses helium. More enemies would be nice in patrol too, seems too empty. "Enemies are moving against each other" is nice.

              • I would make a different first couple of missions depending on the class. For example the Hunter would start in the wilderness of earth etc.

                • You made a good point on a serious issue buddy. How about Instead of stationary mission make it more mobile. Like protecting a moving convoy or vise versa. Trying to take down a moving ship destroying sections/parts of the ship within given time etch A labyrinth or puzzles. I would really love to do some complex puzzles or labyrinths. One guardian solves the puzzle while the other two protects him/her. A thug of war. Each team has a player that pulls the rope while the other two of each team tries to disrupt each other. In short make more of something as complex as the vault of glass but not as extreme. Make it so that three players can finish and enjoy it. I believe that majority of the complaints came from people who hasnt been to VOG yet. I admit i havent finished it yet but to experience it once made me motivated to get my armors and weapons maxed and be better overall.
