Disclaimer: This seems to be a very touchy subject amongst the community seeing how Xur shows up each week selling exotics. These following words are opinions and explanations on "I earned this" and such. Feel free to leave an mature analytical comment on your point of view on the subject. Case and Point for the TL:DR's: People we have the same item but earned/gained it in a different way. In the end day it is the same item. Yours no different from theirs. That and this is just a video game. Moved up due to speed readers. Random: Statically Speaking, of or characterizing a process of selection in which each item of a set has an equal probability of being chosen. Earned: to merit as compensation, as for service; deserve: to receive more than one has earned to acquire through merit: to earn a reputation for honesty. Let us start with Xur and the strange coins. Strange coins are earned in multiples of 3 from the weekly heroic strike and can sometimes be found randomly though engrams, crucible, and chest. Getting these are Random but saving up for Xur seems like they earned it. Let me explain, The weekly heroic strikes guarantees you strange coins that you earned by completing the strike via level 28, 26, 24. So pretend we did 3 weeks of level 28 weekly, that is 27 strange coins earned that players can spend that on gear Xur may, as much as it pains me to say this, randomly for that weekend. So even then it is up to chance but guaranteed to get those items for two days. Now for the "earned it in PvP, Strikes, Raids, and etc...". we the players should realize after completing the events it is random chance we would get what we want. For example, just last night I randomly obtained the MIDA Multi-Tool in Vanguard Tiger when my two partners could have also gained it as well. Another example would be the Nightfall Strikes and how people were randomly obtaining strange coins when they should be guaranteed a legendary or exotic item despite the fact that it is random in itself. So looking from my point of view, we choose a game mode where we randomly get paired up with random people at some random location to complete this random mission just to have some random shot at random generated items. So to be blunt, everything at the random item screen from completion is randomized. But to be fair they did earn those items by dumping a lot of time into those game modes Case and Point for the TL:DR's: People we have the same item but earned/gained it in a different way. In the end day it is the same item. Yours no different from theirs. That and this is just a video game.
