Destiny 3.2M players doesn't sound all that great
Yesterday marked the one month anniversary of the launch of Destiny. Hard to believe. It feels like so much more time has passed, given the battles that have raged and the adventures that have ensued. Check out the achievements you've logged as a community: •Destiny averages 3.2 million players each and every day! •Average playtime is still right around 3 hours a day, even on weekdays, one month after launch. •The average player plays Destiny 1.8 times a day. •The average player has played Destiny 20.9 times. •Over the past three weeks, we’ve had more players online in Destiny than we did during the same span for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, combined.
Halo wasn’t stretched across 4 different platforms. If the number was closer to 5 or 6M, then I would say wow. Posting 3.2M average? Really? You can’t compare Halo to Destiny. I am also to believe you sold way more copies than that. Sure if you had a better storyline, better events, and YOU TOLD THE TRUTH your numbers would be higher. Just saying! Don’t get me wrong, I have played and tried Queens Wrath and didn’t do Iron Banner due to work commitments. The few I talked to outside these forums said it was fun but not what they said it was going to be. It is a pattern people. Just accept it and either play it or don’t. When their numbers start to shrink and they realize (like Microsoft and Xbox One, Windows 8, etc..) they need to listen to community now or suffer the loss shortly down the road. Microsoft swore up and down the Kinect was integrated into the system and they wouldn’t sell it without it. Shortly after bam, you can buy one without it. I would listen now and not weeks from now. SPEAK to the community and let them know a timeline of what priorities you are working on. As a project manager, I tend to let my customer know what I am working and give them opportunity to place input. I don’t say one thing and do another. I need $$ and recommendations down the road. I am honest and say it like it is. If my team bust a timeline or go over budget, I don’t ignore them or blow smoke. I tell them the truth. 90% they get upset but with the truth I give them a plan on how to get back on track and they usually hire me again. My advice to Bungie if they read this at all is just tell the truth. People will play the game, just have some integrity and some honor. Your missed guidance or deceptive motives will kill your game. Just be blunt! For example… Iron Banner bring your “A” game because skill matters and 20% of your gear does too. Right, no expectations other than some knucklehead is going to kick my butt because I suck at PvP due to his/her superior skills. Truthfully people will try and use this against you. Someone who is sue happy will say “Join the cause for Class Action Law Suit!” They advertised this and admitted to lying to us. It is okay because you have 499M in your budget still right? I know if this was my company that I was part of, I would be shamed. Shamed that I fooled millions by its miss guidance and lack of honor. I wouldn’t be proud to say “I made this!” Shoot I feel bad for your employees. I see some changes come in the future and not game changes. I still play the game from time to time now. Not as much as the first week because frankly I am not a grinder and don’t like PvP. The game play is good, scenery is wonderful but it’s the lack of content, story and all the other stuff you said the game was to be, like SEE that mountain yeah you can get to the top of it. I just figure I would play when the new stuff comes out and if it is recycled, then guess I will go do something else. If I could ask one question to Bungie and that would be what is your company’s mission statement and do you honor it?

      • 3.2 average players? Out of over 6 million copies? You guys know how to look at DATA right? If I don't play every day, so if I play once every other day, I am .5 players for that. That just means people aren't playing it non-stop. Not everyone is signing in every day, which is to be expected. Some people have lives, jobs, and school. Which is fine.

On one platform WoW had 1.5 million players the first month. Hypothetically that's 6 million for 4 platforms. Call of Duty MW2 had a little over 2 million on ps3 (446k) and Xbox (1.57 mill) (PC not included). 4+ million if hypothetically 4 platforms. (6+ mil if we look at the more popular at the time console 360) Video games are most definitely more widely played and accepted since the release of either. 3.2 million out of 10 million units sold means roughly 2/3 aren't playing regularly. A user score of 6.4 on metacritic. Regular updates that its "working as intended" No PR/Devs addressing issues thousands of forumites respond to. The story. Luck based leveling. Every level 30 looks the same minus shader and gun. So no customization. become "legend". . . Destiny is definitely in a precarious situation. Sink or swim time will ultimately be the dlc. But the review of the dlc almost has to be in the 9s to bring anyone new or back to it with regular findings of "disc locked content areas." Heaven forbid we find out these are actually true. All they had to do was deliver the buggy ass e3 2013 destiny and we all probably would have been hooked for life, issues included. Now they need to start releasing short and long term goals, tease us with what's coming up until the DLC (failing so far with these "events"), and show what make getting DLC worthwhile (but at this point making sure players aren't "WTF this isn't an expansion its the rest of the game we knew we were missing" Deej may have been enough prerelease but if this is a multiplayer only online game (MOO), there needs to be more communication. Communication about major player concerns/issues/feedback/ideas (not just cherry picked ones), direction (events, dlc, pvp, pve, etc) , and support (thank god they added the DCO (destiny NORAD thing).

      • This is a bit harsh. Listen, I am all for pointing out how Bungie can make the game better, and I do agree that it's not exactly what I expected. This section of the forum is called "feedback" for a reason, and sure, everyone has different opinions/ideas... The lawsuit thing is taking it a bit too far if you ask me. Saying the employees should be ashamed of what they created is simply not true. Clearly a ton of good work has been put into this game by teams of hard working designers, programers, project managers, etc. You said it yourself, it's a fantastic looking game and in my opinion the design and artwork is spot on. The shooting mechanics are amazing and the coop gameplay is the most fun I've had on a console game in years. As someone who works in the industry, I can assure you the Destiny production team has a lot to be proud of. There is one part of your rant I agree with, and that is when you said "SEE that mountain yeah you can get to the top of it." This, to me, is the one thing that I felt misled on. I was under the impression it was going to be an "open world" game, and while the PvE maps are pretty big when you put them all together, it just doesn't feel that big when you're told to "Turn Back!" when crossing a hill or attempting to jump on top of a building. I would love to hear Bungie's response to this, not in terms of what they originally meant by describing it as an open/explorable world, but more as to the future of the game and if we can expect true open world gameplay at some point or if this is it. I've said this before in other threads; I'm not implying that it has to be Skyrim, but a little more freedom of movement would go a long way. Just let me perch on top of the hill for god's sake.

          • Well said mate, I remember watching a video about all the enemy factions within the game, I think there was 9 or so, whereas it turned out there is 4, what's up with that. I have depression and I play games as an escape from reality, so I don't have much money, as much as I do enjoy playing it with friends, I feel personally very ripped off by the final product. Again while I have hope for the game, I have set a personal target of the first DLC, if that fails to deliver what was advertised I will give up on this game and I will never buy anything to do with Bungie or Activision ever again.

            • If it's true that Destiny sold 10M total copies, then the 3.2M active base is a HUGE drop. But to see Bungie stroke themselves like that convinces me that they'll do NOTHING to address the problems and shortcomings within the game. They're spinning the facts and believing their own hype, though gamers no longer believe it. It's that kind of tone-deafness that really irks me, and unfortunately for them, by the time they really do wake up, their base will be mostly diminished, and their reputation will still be in tatters.

I really just don't want this to become a trend among videogame companies. Bungie made so much money off of this game, I don't want the next ES to be a game where I have to pay for the game in tiny parts. Not that I think Bethesda would ever do that, they a far superior game company but it possible that they will. The worst part is I am not even excited for the DLC because the story was so bad that there is nothing to make me want to see the next episode. If you are going to try to -blam!- my wallet at least make it pleasurable for me. Plus, The DLC will honestly be just the same repetitive mission (not missions every single mission was practically the same with only 1 -3 outliers) we have already done 300 times now just with slightly differnt cinematic content.

Well it's not. But then again DESTINY story missions can be beat in 10 hours of game time. The Grind to level your Character to 28 /29 even 30 will keep those that like GRINDING, playing for awhile longer. That being said.. December is still pretty far away and considering most people that are still playing are already level 28/29 are only a couple of raids from getting that Raid Gear that takes them to level 30 The game will have no Purpose then, No gear to be had, No reason to do daily bounties as your Vanguard Marks will be useless... assuming at level 30 you should have at least 4/5 Exotic weapons and the rest should be legendary. Doubt there will be any monthly content like the Queen Mission to keep people coming back. I don't know about you but I'm kinda tired of seeing the same Strikes / Roll every time i Log in.

Considering the game has sold well over 10 million copies, an average of 3.2 is quite low. Over 4 million people played the beta, this means that the beta did better than the actual game is doing. I expect that number to drop over the next two months, pick back up a little in December and January, then drop again.

                        • What happens to a game without match making when you cannot find others to play with? It becomes broken. Let's say I buy this 15 years from now. It would be unplayable. More so than now.

                        • . one more thought on this. IF 3.2 million log on of the 10 million that bought destiny then divide that by about 65% ( people getting dced and logging back in multiple times) . SO that means only around 900,000 people (est) actually log in to play destiny. LOL OUT OF 10 MILLION!!!!! Hello Bungie see how you fkedup. How about you should not have sold us Day 1 content as a fkn xpack. 1 month out and everyone is bored out of their minds and no one logs in anymore. * FLASHING BRIGHT NEON SIGN* make raids and ALL content easy/less complicated so EVERYONE who bought destiny can play that content. less then 5% of the people who bought destiny have done or competed the VoG. Another *FLASHING BRIGHT NEON SIGN* .....

                            • And how do you know they are not telling teh truth? You dont. You have no way of knowing what the actually player numbers are in the game. And that 3.2 was a daily average, not totall number per day or total number that has played the game. An average is not a total ya know. It could have well had over 5-6 millinon playing on some days and less on others. Does not matter it is spread over 4 different systems. Not every game is always going to have high numbers all the time. No matter who the company is that made the game. They are not going to come out and say what you want them to say or apologize for the game being how it is because you dont like it. There so called miss guidance will not kill the game no more than how CoD made so called promises about certain things yet put them in the game in different ways and called them different things, and yet CoD has not died from it either. There is no honor in video games, it is a buisness out to make money, they do not owe you any speical treament ever. They do not owe you the truth you think you are owed.

Bungie, practice integrity, your numbers will mean nothing if you continue to promise one thing and then not even plan on delivering it. The Iron Banner where gear matters? • I really enjoy Destiny for the moment. I'm glad I didnt buy the DLC upfront because Bungie has been extremely deceptive in just about everything they say. I don't know if its intentional. I'm getting pretty tired of them responding to questions with vague answers and then acting like we should be satisfied with the response. Im with you man. All I want is a little honesty from Bungie.

                                • I also thought that was low number for four consoles. I personally don't see Bungie recovering, they don't seem interested in making relevant changes or even trying to assure their customers they are at work fixing Destiny's problems. It's just us testing their unfinished game, over and over while they remain silent, ignoring feedback. Hours played doesn't mean much when there's no competition on the market. I wanna see the numbers next month.

                                  • I like that with games nowadays, that if you assume something by imagining what you thought they mean when they say something then they lied. The Iron Banner is what they said it would be, it's just not what you had hoped for. If anything that's disappointment. For people who say the trailer is deceptive: seriously, what form of entertainment (movies, shows, games etc.) is exactly like its original trailer. C'mon man. And as for DLC-gate (Lol) did you ever think they planned for it to be DLC to begin with, and that starting to put it on the disc would help smooth the launch of it? Taking the extra time after the completion if the original game to start on it? I know we should keep an eye on companies to keep their quality and so on and so forth, but not every big release should be under such ridiculous scrutiny. They released a game, complete with what they promised, but not what you wanted. That's called buyers remorse. But seriously the crap some people put on these forums is not constructive criticism, it's just more like venting crap they brought home from work. But Bungie will be fine, Ice been on these forums since Halo 3, and the angry still roamed. How about instead trying to find ways to bash the company, you instead try to see it from their perspective. I won't be responding to anybody BTW
