The story and why my hatred grows

We all know by now the story in the game is a spaghetti noodle at a Mexican restaurant. There is no context for it and your wondering what the hell went wrong in the kitchen. So I turned to the grimore, which is a great way to provide background exposition you can't fit into the main story, if you've actually told a story in first place. This is where I discovered that not only did you fail at the essential RPG element of telling a freaking story, but that you committed the cardinal sin of storytelling. You wasted a potentially great story. Did you, dear guardians, know there was an actual reason to go to the VoG other than an all white shader? That there is an epic story hidden amongst the loot tables? Yet no context is ever given within the game itself. No attempt is made, beyond an off comment by Dinklespark, to explain it's existence let alone it's purpose. It's this expertly wasted potential for something more than a hamster wheel simulator with guns, that makes me angry at being lied to prerelease. We are angry because you wasted our time, got our hopes up that this epic adventure lays before us and then dashed it all on the rocks of stupidity and bad design. And before anyone tries to defend this as the opening gambit of a 10 year plan let me ask you a question. Do you remember the time you went to see the Lord of the Rings and you sat down in the theater? Do you remember as the lovely shots of the shire opened before you and Gandalf arrived? Do you remember right after Frodo got the ring the credits rolled and they told you don't worry you can read the rest of the story at thier website and in 3 months you can pay more to watch Frodo meet Aragorn at the pub? You don't remember that last part? That's because it's a BS way to tell a freaking story but a great way to gouge money out of people.

Well it sucks to be you guys who expect an amazing story driven game in a shared world experience that already has a lot to do. I'm sorry my friends but to juggle an epic story with brilliant gameplay mechanics whilst making it an open world shared between players is far too ambitious if not impossible for various reasons and destiny has never promised this. I played the beta and knew exactly what i was getting and was not deluded into thinking i can jump into my ship and go where ever i want in a huge universe between various planets and solar systems whilst doing epic missions that unfold a mesmerising story as i play with other people in the world. This is not no mans sky and even that will never pay the attention to detail that makes destiny such a beautiful game to play. Not gonna happen at least until destiny 3. So by you and others complaining about a lack of story makes no sense unless you have just started playing games in the last 5 years or expect far more than you should and if the latter is the case then i recommend you play fallout 3 or oblivion which has an abundance of content and a fantastic story line but be warned the gameplay will not be anything as polished as Destiny. You might as well play zelda a link to the past. I'm not saying the game is perfect but it is amazing and a great foundation to start something very special that no other game can do. The possibilities are endless so i hope bungie does the right thing to shut u moaners up for good and hopefully by then most of you idiots will be playing cod advanced retard fare.

    • I like your example. I like this one too: It's like you are watching Star Wars: A New Hope for the first time. You see a full trailer showing all this cool stuff, planets, laser gun battles, star ships, Darth Vader, some hot chick in all white etc... Then you go to the movie... In the opening title crawl, the names and locations of people and places are omitted and half of the text is removed. Every scene of exposition and additional story not directly showing Luke is cut out and we are only given the names of Luke and Ben. On top of all that the movie ends right after Luke, Ben, Han, Chewie and the droids leave Tatooine and you are told the rest of the movie will be sold to you in 30 minute increments for the year...

      • This game does not tell a story. It's not that the story is bad. It does not attempt at telling one. We're supposed to create our own by playing the same five strikes for three months. I do love those strikes, though.

        • I see your point but please give me an example of a game not a movie that is in the same category as Destiny, This is a completely different Idea on how a video game works yes it is simaler to others like Borderlands, COD and Diablo but is not quite the same. I would hold off on complaining about the story until the expansions we still don't know what they will be like. If we only get a few new maps and maybe 2 or 3 more story missions then I have to agree they need to change thing but to launch a game and have an expansion planned and ready to preorder the same day the game is released should have told you something about the game. I mean we are getting an expansion. 4 months after the game was released,

It didnt have a Story, Only through the Outcry of People did it Gain one or more alike Was forced to have one. But i still cant belive people Still belive Developers on what they Say. Its like looking at the Child you helped through their Life and Calling them a Failure it just doesn't Happen.I Spent 5 Dollars to get into beta, Played it. Decided i liked it and Paid it off Fully. I went in Blind as i do with all games and it has only ever Benfited me to an Extent. I learned my lesson after watchdogs really quick. And having a ADHD/ADD Mind really does help i must say. But to my first point wait until the first two DLC comes out. WE get them for free, well those who preordered it. Then Make a Judge on the Story.

            • The mechanics of the game are pretty much flawless it's just all let down by a shallow story that explains nothing and just ultimately raises questions about everything.

            • The Sad thing is that the Bungie Community seems to have its head in the sand. Pressing questions and concerns of fans get flippant and patronizing answers..if they are answered at all.

            • Agreed. The story feels very fragmented. Like I only watched several random episodes that encompass only half of a season of a show. I barely feel connected to it. It really feels like it was released early and things were cut. It just doesn't feel as "big" and immersive as they made it out to be. I've already reached that point where I can just grind for status among factions, which doesn't get me anything at this point. Or I can start a new class and do the same thing all over again. I actually REALLY like the game. I just want more, not more of the same. I hate to say this in such a negative sounding way, but the main thing that comes to mind when it comes to the story is wasted potential.

            • No offense, but I do not think many people play an MMO for the story. It's all about loot and getting a bad *** character. I could care less about this story, I just wish I could skip the story videos when they come up.
spaghetti noodle at a Mexican restaurant
The whole game is like this. It's like Bungie separated the company into half-a-dozen departments, each responsible for a different aspect, but none were allowed to talk to one another. The maps, the scenery, and the non-playable technology within were designed to be 1960's scifi. Set on earth, and the moon. The 'story', and playable technology is a distant future based on present day scifi. Set throughout the solar system. The core gameplay, and content is a FPS; while the mission structure is based on an MMO. They seem to have wanted to add RPG elements, but everything's so linear, it doesn't make sense. There's next to no choice as how to progress, and equip, your character. They were eager to include PvP. Fair enough. Lots of people love it. But it's just kinda slapped on.

              • i remember watching LOTR and it ended right as it was getting my interest and a year+ later they released the rest of the scene, just to end right at another good point to make me wait, again. I remember the Hobbit liked to do the same. but in all respect, so they arent innocent in my eyes, either. With all respect, though, I understand where you are coming from. there's some plot holes that need to be filled and flavor to be added. the mechanics are great, but not really much story. IDK even why im working for a faction except for gear and the grimoires make me like each group less and less. Dead Orbit is only good for the black shader, to me.

                • I don't think this game has an actual 'story' in any form, good, bad or indifferent. The so called story missions are more like side missions you get in other mmo type games from npc's as you travel around the world. The only truely 'linked' story is the one where you go to venus, meet the stranger, go to the reef and then do the queens stuff. That is a story line. And what is sad, is that it was VERY interesting and it made me feel like my character was actually doing something for a *reason*. I loved it. And it really makes me sad because had the entire game been that way, forget it, it would have been a game I would love to play for years to come. People mention, well you never played WoW at it's begining or other MMo's. I played the very first Everquest from the day it came out. That game had more of a story at it's start than this game. And it had a ton of interesting things to do. You have NO idea what a raid is, until you did a raid in that game. Raids consisted of 100's of players (i'm not inflating numbers here either. There were 100's for 1 raid. You had to have that many. Who that played Everquest 1 can forget raiding the Plane of Fear?). The same with Wow when it started. There was a story line and I played that game for years as well. Even if this is Bungie's sort of chapter 1 in the story, it fell more than flat. There is no hook, nothing to grab the player and pull them in. Nothing to make them to find out what happens next. There is no 'cliff hanger' at the end that makes you yearn for the next 'chapter'.

                  • The problem is, Bungie gave us the idea of a vast, epic, explorative, open world, revolutionary, master piece of a game and got roped into an unreal time line and had to Butcher the game. The mechanics, graphics, music and over all game play is fun as hell.. Even doing a repetitive grind day in and day out would be acceptable... if I had any connection the the story at all. I played Halo:CE for hours, solo campaign on legendary, for a couple of years or so.. Never once did I get bored. This Game has that potential, in fact, it has the potential to destroy the competetion and rule the world of gaming.. if only it had a story and made a connection.. We played the beta hopeing they left out all the story so we could experience that when the game released.. its sad that the Beta is still going on with no real story...

                    • They should have made story missions for each class different. The way it is now each guardian no matter titan, warlock, hunter. ...male or female, human or not all play the same missions and experience the same story. So each guardian is the same as another pretty much. No wonder they can't talk to each other, it would a huge case of Neverending deja vu.

                      • I've paid more than 100 dollars, also payed this "Xbox gold" thing so I could play all the contents in the game. I've played Destiny for two weeks and I'm fed up because there is nothing. It's a shame knowing that Halo Reach was replayable again and again even though this game hasn't got a lot to play with but at least it has A STORY.

                      • In the ViDoc the story missions were called chapters, maybe they should have left it that way so it would seem more like a series of books, which you have to buy more of to complete the story :)

                          • I haven't really played much of the past halo games except for halo ce and halo 2, but I clearly remember halo 2 being disappointing. Now, this is a legimate question and I am in no way trying to troll, but were the halo stories really that amazing as people remember them to be? Perhaps Bungie just isn't good at telling stories and people are expecting them to suddenly be, when destiny is actually on par for what they have done in the past.

                            • I have to say its embodied how I feel about the how Destiny has crumbled away to just nothing but bounce around and kill the same thing over and over and over. I was hyped for the story for the mystery for the lore. For the background and fear of the darkness. To develop a character and make connections and a Reason to fight. I am just left with a pretty polished Halo: Firefight with a sprinkling of info from the ghost in loading screens of whats going on. Great when the phone app and the forums are more fun then the game it self. There is a serious problem, and to save a game after nearly a month out with DLC that its paid for? The dream of Destiny really just crumbled and nothing else is solid its just crazy glued back together. and painted over in hopes to make it look nice long enough to suck 200 bucks out of the gamer. I will wait and see what the community has to say about the DLC before I purchase it. Tell then I am going back to older games Like Knights of the Old Republic, Skyrim and Mass Effect 1 & 2. ME 3 and now Destiny are now my reminders hype and Big names Like EA and Activistion will mean broken rushed and chopped up emptiness. Honestly I defended the game and believed in just give it time read a lot of alleged information on how the game was supposed to be but basically got re written at the end. Just seeing how this game is the high class gem that was shown to us and watch the paint come off the led. I have just lost hope for this game. Next Gen gaming is feeling very.... time for my exodus to Old school gaming.

                              • I must admit I'm a bit disappointed, not enough to quit playing ( I don't know why but I will not quit now I've spent the money), but pretty disappointed. Mainly for 3 reasons: 1. Some people spent $100+ on this game and it has barely lived up to what it could be. If I was supposed to "Become Legend" or "Be Brave", I certainly haven't felt like I've done either yet. 2. I think Bungie created this feedback page just so we can let out our rants because I don't think Bungie ever reads this. We've ranted about many things, very few have actually been fixed or something. Yeah there are patches but they don't normally fix what we are ranting about. 3. I don't know about you guys but I get a bit bored of: -ghost says to go somewhere -you kill some enemies (maybe a sub-boss) -scan something (no skill required) -more enemies -possibly a boss -repeat for the next level As I said you might not agree with that but for me that seems to be all it is. The bounties aren't a challenge any more because they are the same thing over and over again. I still think the game is decent but I think it really didn't live up to its potential.

                              • What pisses me off is that all the elements in the game would have deserved a perfect 10, the music is epic, the graphics are great, the multiplayer is fun, the story (if being told properly ) would have been great. I am pissed because its by no means a bad game, but its far below of its truly potential. I think Bungie should be ashamed to down play all the huge effort from the artistic team and the lore and the whole universe.
