Soo... since when was halos story so good?

I keep hearing people compare the stories of halo and destiny like bungie dropped the ball so bad. But I played the first 3 halos and I don't remember the story being that compelling at all. An argument could be made for halo having better characters but the story was just as tangled and unremarkable I think. Maybe I could be wrong it's been awhile since I played them because my 360 broke not long after I got it and never bothered getting a new one. I'm just confused because I hear that this game is uncharacteristic for bungie, but I've always saw halo as having amazing gameplay and a story no one ever cared about. Edit: wow this blew up quickly I only expected 2 or 3 replies, love everyone's passion. It is quickly becoming apparent that this story meant alot more to some other people than me and my friends, and that's great maybe one day we will be having this same conversation about destiny. Edit II: extended universe does not count, I'm talking in game story. I would also make this point, the people saying the story will come together with dlc are getting tons of flak on this forum. Well I would argue those books are just non-playable expansion packs. Why weren't those archs in game if they are so important to the story.

I have played every Halo game. I have read at least half of the books, and watched all of the movies/shows. I love everything about the Halo Universe, and Halo is my primary reason for buying Microsoft Consoles. That said: The INGAME STORY of Halo: Combat Evolved(aka the very first Halo game, on the first Xbox) was incredibly generic and paint by numbers. You had a generic faceless space marine fighting generic alien bad guys while trying to stop a generic doomsday weapon. The game was saved by spectacular gunplay and revolutionary (at the time) enemy AI. What Halo:CE's story has over Destiny's is structure and cohesion. Halo:CE told a single, cohesive, complete story. Destiny is trying to tell several stories at once and not completing any of them. The Halo Franchise did not begin to have an amazing story until both Halo 2 and the Fall of Reach Book released, and the game universe was fleshed out and moved beyond generic sci-fi. Of course Halo Fanboys will scream till they are blue in the face that Halo has the best story ever created, but that did not begin until Halo 2, and Halo: The Fall of Reach. The Fall of Reach book, specifically, did wonders for the Franchise, by explaining the origins of Spartans, and making John-117 more than a generic space marine.

    • It was only good to newbie FPS players and console junkies. Anyone who had a PC laughed at that game...

    • In all honesty, Bungie has only ever been good at creating big and unique universes. Not necessarily FILLING these universes with anything, mind you. They hire people like Eric Nylund to do the fleshing out for them.Bungie just set the groundwork. However Halo did have some amazing moments in it's in game story. The books are where it's at tho..

    • I always thought this but never would put it up here for fear of backlash, lol. But I never really knew what was going on but yet again I did start on halo 2. I think mass effects story and the elder scrolls story blew halos out of the water, last of us aswell.

    • Looking back on Halo, it's easy to remember the overall story and those seriously bad ass moments that instantly come to mind. There were Halo cut scenes that for me were awesome and showed off how MC was the most lethal warrior humanity had ever produced. Was Halo's story amazing? To some yes and to some no. But it was at least cohesive and if it was confusing sometimes, you could put it all together in the end. You also knew without a doubt that you were a very important part of humanity's survival and had a sense of big responsibility on your shoulders as MC. Destiny's story is just difficult to get into, your character seeming lost and directionless. When reading through the entire grimoire, it makes more sense and reveals potential to be epic. In-game, the cut scenes and characters of Destiny just don't have life or personality. Some would argue that MC was underdeveloped with no personality, & though that may be true, you had Cortana to add personality and character while MC was undeniably bad ass even if he didn't have much personality. This is just my analysis of the comparison, based on my opinion. But I think there are big differences in the two stories, with Destiny severely lacking some much needed elements.

      • People compare the story of all three games to this one installment. If you look at the first Halos story and Destinys story, they are about the same quality.

        • Preach, my friend. Other than master chief looking cool, I don't get why everyone thinks do highly of him. I played resistance 1, and the way the story is presented, Nathan Hale comes across as a way bigger bad ass. I don't mind the lack of story as much as some people do, and I do hope they add more to it, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. I wasn't expecting mass effect quality of story here. I do wish there was more top do though. I've never been a month into an online game and done everything there is to do in the game by then, until now.

        • The art of using a game to tell a story has yet to be perfected. Halo had a good story but mainly told through the Eric Nyland books, they were a great SF read. The story as told through the game was ok but limited in scope due to the fact that it is a game. I think the only game that effectively told a story and melded it with action was TLOU. HL2 and Bioshock also but to a lesser extent.

          • If anyone played the original Marathon series, they'd probably agree with the following: by comparison to Marathon, Halo's story was written in crayon.

            • It's like people don't remember the first Halo. Hey, we found this ring thing. Oh no, enemies are attacking. Fight enemies with a loose backstory. Halfway through the game it turned into shotguns vs zombies. Original enemies show back up. The Halo we're on and the others are designed to kill everything to stop the flood. We must stop the Halo. Our robot allies turn on us. We kill everyone and blow up our ship, to stop the Halo. Cliffhanger ending... I recently enjoyed playing Halo (all of them), but I think Bungie did a better job with Marathon. But that may just be the nostalgia talking. I've also admitted that playing through them for the first time, earlier this year, may have dampened the wow factor of the series. With some of the graphics/physics seeming a bit dated and missing out on all the community stuff surrounding the games in their heyday.

              • In halo you blew up a ring that could wipe out all sentient life in a portion of our galaxy. In destiny I blew something up... I don't know what it was, but it was... Something right?

                • The story 'in game' is almost paint by numbers if you break it down into a creative writing context. Don't get me wrong, I love the game but without counting the books, the story falls back on very fun solid gameplay as it's selling points. It's hard to deny, I mean hell, I'm sure you could count all the words mastercheif actually said.

                • People are just overrating halo's in game story to find extra ways to criticise Destiny. Halo blew up because of its amazing multiplayer. The campaign was pretty much COD level; something you got out of the way before going online. The only things that made the halo campaigns great for me were the gameplay, messing around with friends in co op and the general freedom that a lot of the levels gave you.

                  • Its an action game, and much like action films, I don't care about the story; I care about the action. Don't get me wrong, I love a good story, and it isn't as though these aspects are mutually exclusive, I just don't expect them with these sort of games. The same goes for Call of Duty and Battlefield. Games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the Witcher on the other hand; I believe that without their rich stories the gameplay alone wouldn't hold them up. The one exception to this rule being BioShock, which Bungie could certainly learn from. TLDR; Destiny needs to rip a few pages out of BioShocks book.

DESTINY:you a GAURDIAN of earth dead for many years have been awoken to deafeat THE DARKNESS....you kill aliens and establish contact with other colonies....and stop a invasion from space zombies by your self....but it's not tht awesome because all it is you stop is a super knight not a cool diffrent boss that has a story just a big alien....then after that you jut walk over to Venus after meeting this chick that never tells you anything(unless you buy DLC am I right?! XD) so you kill aliens and robots then go too mars to stop the aliens robots pigs who the -blam!- knows....and apperently you kinda stop the cabal Then you rush in to a maze an kill 3 of the Same mini Bosses that you already fought....so Thats a bummer and you end with way too many cliffhangers(1-2 max guys come on) Destiny has more words and WHATVER but halo is simple and awesome so SHUT UP

                          • That's not the point. Halo followed a clear line with begining and end. Even if it wasn't a great story. The Destiny story is shit. No clear end, so many unanswered questions, and much more...
