The Embrace of Winter: Part Four

A few hours was a very optimistic speculation. It ended up taking nearly two days for them to piece together enough parts to make a working ship. The main engine had to be rebuilt from scratch using only base materials they salvaged from around the research station; and they decided to skip repairing the life support because it would have taken another day or two for that alone. "I really better get some answers when we get to this city," said the EXO as he wiped grease off of his hands and onto the last few clean cloth parts of his armor. "I'm sure everything will become much clearer," said his Ghost as it floated around and inspected the ship. "Besides, now this ship is yours." "Yeah," laughed the EXO sarcastically. "I am so happy to own this marvelous piece of machinery." "You don't have to be so sarcastic you know," sighed his Ghost. "It doesn't really help anything." "Sure it does," he quipped, "It lifts my mood in all of these bad situations." Before his Ghost could reply they heard a loud grinding sound which was followed by a high pitched roaring. They both looked into the distance where it seemed to be coming from. When neither of them could see anything they both turned back towards each other. "What was that?" Asked the EXO. "It sounded like a Fallen, but I don't know how they could have gotten in," explained his Ghost as fear found its way into his voice. "When you got us in did you lock it again?" Asked the EXO. "What?" Replied his Ghost defensively. "Of course I did." There were several more roars, including one that was very deep. The noise was followed by a red flare being shot up. If that flare was where they were, then the Fallen were maybe half a mile away at the most. "Why are they shouting like that?" Asked the EXO as he lowered his voice. "I don't know," replied his Ghost who was shaking slightly. "But if I had to guess I'd have to say it was because they found something. Something like an enemy's trail." His Ghost turned and looked at him before he added, "Still unsure about the ship?" "What me?" Replied the EXO as he put his helmet back on. "No way. I love my ship. In fact I love it so much I will name it bacon saver, because it is saving ours." His Ghost almost laughed, but instead dematerialized them both inside the ship. It was not very spacious inside, but it was functional. At least it looked functional. "Hold on," explained his Ghost as the ship started up. The main engines were loud and sounded angry. Yet over them, they could both still hear the Fallen war cries. There was a loud backfire, and the inside of the ship started to smell like burnt rubber and smoke. "We better get out of here soon, or the ship will kill us before those guys get a chance," said the EXO urgently. "It isn't too bad," lied his Ghost, " but I don't think I can pilot it and keep it together." "What about the autopilot?" Asked the EXO. "I thought you said it needed no repairs?" "Well about that," said his Ghost hesitantly. "What I actually said was it shouldn't need any repairs." The EXO cursed under his breath and grabbed the controls. As he grabbed ahold of them he could almost remember piloting something before. It became clear to him exactly what he needed to do, and in a minute he had adjusted all of the controls and thruster output along with getting them off of the ground. "Whatever you're doing it's working," cheered his Ghost. "Keep at it." "No problem Vector," laughed the EXO. "Just one question. Is there an exit we will be taking?" "Yet again my name is Ghost, not Vector," grumbled his Ghost. As the ship lifted up, his Ghost thought about a way out. As he thought, the Fallen caught sight of them. The vicious predators all roared in victory before they opened fire. Luckily, the ship was still mostly out of range, so only a few of the shots hit. However, each shot that landed felt like a rocket against the side with how much the jump ship rocked. "Guess we have no choice," gulped his Ghost. "We have to go out the way we came in. That means getting through all of these Fallen." "You know this thing does not have any weapons right?" Asked the EXO who emphasized the word not. "There is no other choice," answered his Ghost. "I'm afraid this ship would break apart before we got to any other exit." "Oh how I love a challenge," sighed the EXO sarcastically. "Just make sure that the way out is open, and I will get us there."
