This Loot System is Amazing

....said no-one, ever. So let's just have a ponder at the ways we can get loot. Once you hit level 20 in six hours after putting the game, every single enemy in the game now has the exact same chance to drop all rarities of loot. Killing a level 4 Acolyte whilst in free-roam on Earth, has the exact same chance as killing level 28 buffed enemies in the Weekly Nightfall Strike or the level 26 enemies in the end game Raid. Efficiently, you can kill a couple hundred Acolytes (or even a thousand) that permanently spawn in a cave on Earth within an hour. You can finish the Nightfall Strike in that amount of time with only one to two hundred kills. I remember getting a notification when I hit level 20 - I cannot remember the details, but supposedly we could now undergo the strikes and missions as daily/weekly events at a higher level to earn legendary loot. I do every Daily mission and every weekly Strike (except Nightfall), which so far has been kind enough to give me maybe two Legendary Engrams. I've also stood a fair distance away from a small cave on Earth mindlessly blowing away level 4 enemies for the same amount of time I've spent on the Dailies/Weeklies, yet earned roughly thirty Legendary Engrams. Other than Strange Coins and Ascendant Materials, there is next-to-no reason to undergo the Dailies/Weeklies. In fact, whilst getting my thirty Legendary Engrams from decimating level 4's, I also found (at a rough estimate) two hundred Decoherent Engrams - after decrypting all of these, I have enough strange coins to buy out Xûr for the next few weeks, so now the Weekly Strikes are redundant. Mind you, these engrams also have a chance to yield Motes of Light, which the Weekly Strikes and Daily Missions cannot give to you, bringing forth more reasons to mindlessly annihilate level 4's instead. Oh, of course, the Dailies can give you Ascendant Materials - oh, but all the Legendaries I found can be salvaged into these materials.. I guess, technically, I could max out my gear without ever touching the Daily Missions, either. But wait, there's more! The PVP Loot Rewarding System is it's own kind of "special". Technically, just at a guess, you'd give the best rewards to the best players, the MVP with eight control point captures, 36 kills and a 6KD for that game, would logically receive some beefy rewards such as Legendary Engrams, correct? Nope. The person who joined late, went AFK, got one control capture, 2 kills and a 0.2KD was rewarded the Legendary Engram- OH WOW, HE WAS REWARDED AN EXOTIC WEAPON TOO!? Are you telling me.. If I use a rubber band to keep my character spinning around so I can AFK an entire game without getting kicked, I'll get the better rewards? Remarkable! There's even twitter accounts named after the Legendary Engram and Cryptarch, that take the absolute piss out of your game's Loot System. It's rather amusing, there's some quality stuff on there. For example, this is one of their most recent tweets: @legendaryengram: The Queen's Wrath content includes more bounties and no new story. At least Bungie is consistent. They drop your hope like I drop rares. Don't get me wrong, I've had a fair amount of luck with your game, I've had multiple exotic bounties, I have a few exotic weapons thanks to those, plus some legendaries, full legendary/exotic armour and so on. I'm one of the luckier ones, and I'm truly grateful for that, but even I, someone who's got all this wonderful loot, am able to point out the absolute confusion and illogical nonsense your Loot System brings forth. I'm speaking for everyone, and if you can find people who for some out-of-this-world reason find this Loot System to make sense and be a good end-game system, I could well and truly go into cardiac arrest. Sadly, this is not a troll, and it pains me to admit this. This is well and truly Destiny's Loot System in a nutshell. Reach max level, farm enemies from the beginning of the game, don't touch end-game content and you'll be better off than those players who repeatedly try high level strikes for non-existent improved loot drop chances. Please, can I get a response here? Surely you read this, or have read the couple hundred other posts about your Loot System? Would you consider changing it? Personally, I believe enemies under level 20 shouldn't drop Legendary Loot. Then, the higher the level and the harder the modifiers should then increase the chance of Loot Drops. This is the way it should be. Bungie, can you truly say I should be rewarded all my Legendaries for decimating thousands of level 4's at the very beginning of your game in free roam? Sorry for the wall of text, but you wasted more time farming Legendaries to get rewarded with Rare's than you did reading my post. [EDIT] As someone liked to point out - there is gear only obtainable in the Raid, this is correct, but how do you gear up for the Raid? The exact way I pointed out in this post. Oh, and the Raid rewards can only be obtained once per week, then it's back to the good ol' Treasure Cave. Plus, the exotics found in the Raid are far more efficiently obtained through the thousands of level 4 Acolytes you kill than the few moments you're rewarded loot during the Raid once per week. So here is Destiny. Buy the game, reach level 20 in half a day, farm the Treasure Cave till you're roughly level 26-28, skip all high level end game Strikes and so on, beat the raid a couple times when you're allowed to attain all Raid specific gear. Congratulations, your accumulated Destiny playtime adds up to: 10% - Getting to level 20. 70% - Farming the Treasure Cave. 0% - Playing high level end game Strikes. 20% - Farming limited amount of Raid Gear. Now, wait for DLC. Yes, this will cost extra.

  • It is quite fantastic spent an hour doing the weekly heroic strike and got 1 blue engram. Decoded it and got a legendary leg armor, which don't get me wrong is awesome but the only problem is that I'm a Warlock and the armor is for a Titan. WTF??? Why do I get Titan armor when I'm a Warlock? Best loot system ever!!!!!!!

  • Last night I played various multiplayer matches for a couple of hours. Reward: 1 blue helmet. Next I ran two level 24 missions (I am 23). Took 45 minutes in total. Reward: absolutely nothing. Next I completed three or four Queen's bounties including killing 200 fallen with headshots only. Reward: nothing aside from a small amount of rep. Finally, I shot at loot cave for around 40 minutes and received around 7 blues, 2 legendaries and a Mote of light. (One of the legendaries became a blue at the hands of the Cryptarch) Can anyone else see a problem here???

    • Sadly enough, this is how I have played this game so far. I am a 'casual' player as most of you would put it. I don't get to play as much as most of you on these forums do but I have made it to level 22 by pretty much just farming the cave, and doing bounties to get rep. Why do I play it this way? I tried the Strike missions and inevitably that one mission ends up taking over an hour to complete because our fireteam is just that slow. I would like to see the raw damage numbers sometimes because I feel like I am the only one shooting the boss in those strikes. It also didn't help that for my hour of playing, I get a whopping........1 green engram(which reveals into a white item) and nothing from the mission end screen. As the OP put it, there is no reason to do the Strikes like this. I feel like the strikes are pointless to me, so I choose to go do something that nets greater reward for the time spent playing. In the 2-3 hours I have sat farming the loot cave, I have gotten 100+ engrams. I still have yet to see a legendary engram, or even a blue one reveal into a purple item. I guess I am unlucky in that respect. I do the crucible with some friends from time to time to break up the monotony of grinding the normal mobs too. Usually I am on the bottom of the list, but I don't care really. I still don't get loot so I play with the knowledge that if I play enough (100's of matches) I can get some crucible gear eventually. It astonishes me to see players with 3-5+ days played in the 16 days the game has been out. Destiny seems to me like one big lottery. Some people hate gambling, some people love gambling. Some people win, most people lose. I play because I like the game as it is right now. There are plenty of things I dislike about the game as well, don't get me wrong.

      • The loot cave is immensely BORING! I went over there to see what the fuss was about and I was falling asleep within a few minutes. I would much rather earn marks and buy legendary gear (which is what I did) than spend 70% of my game time chilling at a cave. It's a bit more fun that way in my opinion. Cave farming seems like a good way to level up the Cryptarch, but since the Cryptarch seems to enjoy kicking you in the balls it's not enticing enough for me to grind out when I could be off on other planets doing more bad ass things. Note: I don't care if people want to farm the cave, I just find it way to monotonous to spend my game there. If playing a game is boring then there's not much of a point to playing.

Managed to get a lengendary engram from crucible (finally). Turned it in to cryptarch for it to become a green. Immediately after giving me the green he says "Nice weapon guardian."

Nightfall and raids' lowest rewards are legendaries. Also for Me farming the treasure cave is like .5%. I've done everything else and I'm lvl 28 warlock =D

            • Great post. The decline in voices attacking the "filthy cave looters" is noteworthy. A few days ago a post like this would have produced an outcry. I imagine that now everyone is too busy with their guns pointed into a cave, eyes glazed over and fingers taped to their rifle's triggers, praying for a purple engram that actually decrypts into a purple item....and one that their class actually might use.

            • when i had only put a few hours into the game and realized it was nothing special and I was only playing it to pass time until the next game I buy releases, people said my opinions didn't matter because I hadn't played it all yet and I should. Now that I have, the Bungie Drones claim my opinions are invalid because I've put that time into the game and therefore MUST have loved it. I need but 1 piece of raid gear to reach level 30. the only thing stopping me would be me not feeling like farming shards/spirit bloom. There's nothing else for me to do at this point besides replaying strikes I've already played COUNTLESS times for nothing more valuable than what i could get for going afk at the cave. I've already done both the nightfall and the raid this week and the only way to have a chance at the raid on hard is to already have all the gear you'd be earning in the raid. The pvp in this is worse than COD and Halo, so I might as well not even play the game until the beginning of next week now. Not unless I want to do the equivalent of sinking hundreds of dollars in $2 scratch offs trying to win big (get more exotic weapons) I COULD make more characters and then I could do the raid more, but I really shouldn't have to do that just to dodge a shitty timesink Bungie put in the game to stop us from maxxing ourselves so soon after release. It's NOT a great cover for them failing to have enough variety and content in the game.

            • If you enjoy the monotonous cave farming good for you. I've personally gotten nothing out of it, while on the other hand I've gotten all my exotic weapons from crucible, the nightfall, or weekly heroic.

              • I love this game... I agree with your assessment of the loot system... it is fundamentally broken and doesn't reward players in a logical fashion. It encourages activities that aren't advancing the community of the game in any meaningful way. Once you get passed level 24, than you have outleveled all of the postgame gear rewards (unless you somehow get an exotic or you get a legendary engram that will end up being a terrible blue item anyways). I keep playing the game regularly while friends sit at that cave and they have far better gear than me (they played the odds). I'm not trashing my friends, their decision was logical and it isn't an exploit. It is a poorly designed loot system. I am in love with this game, but my long term play definitely depends on how it evolves over the next few months.

I got to level 29 without farming the cave, instead I got it from farming for marks and strange coins. The loot system didn't play a part in it either though. All just reliable methods that don't rely on RNGesus's favor.

                • The loot system doesn't make sense, is not rewarding and definitely begging for people to exploit it. Let's give them some time(unfortunately time is not on their side) to tweak the loot system.

                  • Your right getting to 26 is frustrating. However once you can do the raid and the nightfall loot is better farmed here than elsewhere. Legendary loot from raids is exotic quality and every nightfall mission I have completed has given me an exotic or a legendary. That's the "endgame" loot system you just haven't reached it yet.

                    • I think the loot system definitely needs some reworking. Right now it's just rewarding activities that really shouldn't be what we as gamers want to do in a game. I think Destiny would be a little more enjoyable if people receive loot for achieving something (like the Heroic and Nightfall Strikes) rather than shooting at a cave wall. It looks like it was a poor design on Bungie's part. Yes, cave farming is likely the easiest (and most mind-numbing) method to receive loot. I just assume people want to actually enjoy what they purchased with their hard-earned money. Not feel like they have to farm a spawn point for hours to keep up with everyone else.
