Going back to Diablo III: Reaper of Souls reminded me of where Destiny took some wrong turns

No, this isn't a "hater" post about Destiny being horrible or broken or whatever. I played the Alpha and the Beta, I preordered, and I've put a lot of time into Destiny. I'm a fan. BUT, as a fan, I still want Destiny to be even better. Because Destiny is essentially a loot-based dungeon crawler (plus an MMO, though Bungie says not) it makes sense to compare it to other loot-based games. While the Borderlands games come to mind, the PS4 version of Diablo III is the most current game to which we can compare Destiny. Feeling frustrated by Destiny's cap on weekly Vanguard points, and hating Crucible with a passion (yes, I suck at it), I went back to Diablo III last night. Here's what stands out when considering the two games: 1) Variety. Not just because D3 has random dungeons generating every game, but because there are more distinct areas and many, many more types of monsters and loot. Also: six classes, not three. Makes a difference. 2) Customization. The skill trees in D3 are very deep, and unique to each class. Rather than two sub-variants for each class, like Destiny has players can pick and choose from dozens of skills to use for their characters. And they can rearrange their skills as much as they want, on the fly. Then there's the appearance thing: D3 lets you alter the look of weapons and armor at will, change the colors, etc. Destiny? Nada, other than the too-rare-to-count shaders, and the banners or whatever you call them. Your character is only as unique as the gear you luck into. 3) Replay. Yes, D3 has a numerical level cap, but once you hit that you can earn paragon levels which are neverending and apply to every character in your account . Earning paragon levels is XP-based like regular level-ups, meaning it's straightforward and comprehensible, unlike the "how the hell do I get more light?" system in Destiny. Then there are the bounties, which are unlimited in number (worst case scenario you start a new game after running all the bounties). You don't have some weekly cap on bounty rewards, much less Destiny's daily cap on public event rewards. 4) Loot. As in, D3 has it. Destiny honestly doesn't. If I play D3 for two to three hours I will see noticeable improvements in gear, skills, stats, or some combination of the three. There's no such sense of reward from three hours of Destiny. Getting maybe four items too low powered to be useful after hours of play isn't what I'd call rewarding. These are just the big points. ALL of them are fixable with judicious game patching. Destiny is good, sometimes close to great. But it can be even better, and I KNOW the company that created Myth and Halo can bring Destiny to the next level of awesome.

  • Good points, especially the one about character slots. I've got my main, a titan I run with my brother, and a hunter I run with my sister-in-law. I'd love to have more options on new characters.
