Titan Defenders feeling sluggish and not so important

So ive been playing Destiny for pretty much 17+hrs a day since its release on the 9th. I always like to play the tank class in every mmo esk kinda game so when i saw the defender class i knew that this was the class i wanted to play. Issue is that the defender class is probably lacking a lot of stats to make it feel like a "tank". to give a few good examples - 1. my armor should be nowhere near a dps class, but at the moment it is about the same 2. i have no sort of aura or tank stance that allows my teammates to take less damage, my current class boils down to "i can drop a shield that i can use to mitigate selective damage while im rezzing a teammate 3. Defender titans are pretty much hilariously undermined when it comes to using our special in pvp, strikers - warlocks and certain abilities can pretty much negate the shield i drop with their own, striker and warlocks special and actually just counter mine. 4. the bonus i receive from being in a shield in pvp does not keep me alive what so ever, i cant even eat a shotgun shell when someone rushes into my bubble but the bladedancer special damage mitigation allows them to pretty much eat ~3 shells and keep going.

  • Mate, Titan Defenders are a support class not a tank class. Did you even finish the VoG raid? Defenders are a god send their bubble is amazingly helpful in both boss fights but especially in the last one. I wouldn't say the super is undermined but more 'situational'. Some strikes you are better off as a striker and other a defender. I can tell you right now you cannot be a striker in the VoG raid hands down. In PvP if an enemy has to waste their super just to get your bubble down is fine with me. I agree it the defenders super still needs a buff like being able to shoot out of it would be sick but like I said it all comes down to the situation you are in.

    • I think it would be cool if the shield reflected enemy fire in random directions.

      • Being a blade dancer and having died from a titan in his bubble I can CERTIFY that you cannot die from a single shotty shell to the face, 3 hits from blade dance and the titan in his bubble is still standing, Did I mention Blade dance SHOULD be a 1 shot kill on any player exept ones counter blade dancing (Takes 2 hits) Sunny Locks in their supers (Takes 4 hits) and of course to occasional invincibility frame hits on the Striker which I guess means I should kill in 2 hits. Any way the point here is, I've yet to kill a Defender in his bubble, please refrain from saying you can't survive a Shotty Shell/Blade dance.

You can buff your teammates armor or weapons depending on whether you pick the blessing of light or weapons of light buffs. I've never been killed inside my bubble with the armor of light buff in PVP. At least not by a single opponent, I can take at least two guys, usually three before they can drop me. Unless one is an active blade dancer, they do enough damage that I can usually kill them and maybe get one other guy.

I have 27lvl tit def, you guys yammer about def and som buff, so get it. There are talents for it, to max your armor so you can outstand lot of dmg, yu can set that when yu run trough your bouble you get another shild so you have healt + 2x shield (again you stand lot of dmg) and last one is mele which creats shield upon you again. So tell me how you can type this bullshit ? First make some survey than start cry like baby!! So in pvp you can boost your team with shields it saves a day meny times. Just set your talents right and you will se the chang. Titan power!!

My idea has aways been Titans lvl 20 purple specific gear gives damage reduction percentage that is stack able and it can work off exp for gear. Hunters same thing but gives them a miss chance percentage. Or something linked to their agility or dps. Warlocks same thing but improve aoe and damage of grenades and powers percentage wise. Or something to make them do more damage related to powers. Just an idea though.

      • So you are saying that they should make a class that gains a whole health bar off of a melee be more resistant to damage while every class has the same damage output. This is not a mmo it is a shared world shooter making any class "tankier" than the others would break it due to the limits of mobility. Lets start with your points. 1. If as you say every weapon should remain the same without being class reliant you would have more health and do the same damage as every other class so pvp would be unplayable due to the close corners game play. You would be able to win every trade regardless of skill due to being able to tank more. 2. A stance or aura in a shared world shooter would result in stacking that same stance which would mean teams of pure titans since you can stand together and successfully tank everything from grenades to gunshots making any team game unplayable. Your shield grants you an extra bar of health every time you leave and enter it allowing you to not only cut off objectives but also allow your team temporary invincibility over an objective allowing for game changing plays which no other super or class can do. 3. You say hunter and warlock ulti counter your ulti while you and the hunter share an ulti on one of each of your classes and the other gives you survive-ability. A hunter ulti would can take up to 2 hits to kill you which is targeted via skill not clicking a button in proximity to enemies. You potentially can kill 6 enemies with one ulti which is seemingly impossible for the other classes against envies of any medial skill cap. 4. It takes two shotgun shots to kill you while in your bubble in pvp if they are head shots and pointblank. For you to die while in a bubble would mean you got severely outplayed or had the wrong secondary weapon type equipped and missed all of your shots including melee's which can give you a full additional shield. Your ultimate has more damage mitigation than blade-dancer due to increased health and it relies on a 0 skill basis just drop when low; compared to a skill based ulti which is on an extremely low timer. In conclusion the fact you want a change arguably the most powerful class (with a buff); that is already game breaking in PvE due to their sustainability, immensely powerful grenades and long lasting ultimate's on top of having an ultimate that controls all objective based PvP is quite laughable. As you stated above the only way your ultimate would not work out, would be if you were outplayed by another classes ultimate while being completely isolated from your team; only poor play can result in a poor ultimate from a titan if anything giving an already tanky class due to melee abilities and ulti abilities would be ridiculous. END RANT

      • Totally agree. Why be called a defender when you barely defend. Give me higher armor and the ability to shoot outside my shield but with reduced DMG and I'm good

      • Yeah the shield needs work to be on par w/ the other supers in PvP. I had an idea for it.
shooting out of the shield drains super energy
• I think it should actively and horribly damage people dumb enough to step into "The Thunderdome" as I like to call it. I also sometimes refer to it as "My Office", but I digress. It would allow the bubble to remain passive and stop Bladedancers. As it stands, the bubble is only useful in PVP if you have a shotgun and the enemy is dumb.

The only rediculously terrible thing, is when you drop your bubble and a warlock or hunter just pops it AND kills you. Considering it is stationary, and does absolutely no damage to anyone I think it should take 2 supers together to pop it. Because even if you don't pop it, it doesn't last that long. It feels completely useless against striker titans and bladedancer hunters, because they can use their super INSIDE yours. That was an oversight by Bungie I feel, because at that moment, it is a wasted super, when you had no visual que to say "oh shit, don't use this right now, this person your going against has their super". If it were me, a super used by the enemy team would basically be canceled or swallowed, inside the ward of dawn. A lot of people reading probably think that my fix would be "to powerful" but considering the fact that our super is made to defend us, its pretty shitty at its job. Plus, timing this ability could lead to a more tactical feeling in PvP for defender titans, and lead to a better experience overall, instead of supers being an "I Win" button combo to press. Then again, who am I? I'm just some guy, that's been playing video games for about 20 years, and I have no experience with game design. The fact is: Defender Titans are almost useless in PvP. I wanted to go for an intellect /strength build. Now playing with the class, I realize magnetic grenade is the shit, and disentigrate is a life saver at times. I'm going discipline/strength now. Wasted new monarchy rep. Sucks to start over building rep.

      • Defender is quite possibly the strongest class in the game for PvE. What are you going on about?

      • I'm not a PvP guy, but in PvE I will agree that they need small buffs, they go down just as quick as a DPS, the tweaks we need are, force barrier should activate upon hit, not kill, sunwalker gets the same kind of buff with just damage. And we should have more armor, other than that we are okay, there is no need to have to shoot through the bubble, striker is PvP, if you use defender in PvP you shouldn't expect to never die. The whole balancing out this ruins anything defender has.

      • The not surviving in the bubble is because you have the "run through get a shield" power. With the power above it, I've taken 2 shells and was fine.

      • I feel the defender is a wonderful class but could be provided with a stronger or MAX armor depending on how you choose perks. I love being a support and front line soldier. Perhaps PVE Defender is the purpose of the subclass, but it does make a potent PvP. I just feel that while a defender is unique, it should be more powerful in a way a tank can absorb more damage without support initially than say a hunter or warlock. Perhaps a natural 10% boost to armor regardless? Just something to sweeten the feeling of being the backbone of the Destiny warfront! Thanks Bungie for a great game!

      • agree. would be nice if titan dmg was lower and armor higher. makes you able to run around closer to enemies while teammates pick them of from a distance while you pull some aggro

Auras or Buffs sound like a cool idea. Every class in Destiny is designed to be DPS first, style of DPS depending on how you want it to play out. Several perks in the Defender subclass boost your damage or your ability to help teammates get orbs (re: do supers more often) and the Ward is meant to stave off death -- not let you facetank. The word "tank" shouldn't be used to describe the Defender. It was never designed to be that way -- you are Support, if a term should be used. Armor needs to stay the same. How broken would it be in PvP if the Titan had twice the effective health as a Hunter but their shotguns each did the same damage?

      • Defender subclass definitely needs a buff. Kinda useful in PvE under certain conditions, but could be a lot better.

      • I agree completely, armor caps for each class needs to be looked into. The Titan should have the highest armor and the warlock the lowest and the hunter in between.
