Not the Destiny I expected...

I first heard about Destiny a few years ago, when we gamers had seen little more than a few pieces of art showing a Devil Walker, some Cabal, and the Vex, as well as some pyramid ships. We were told this was going to be the mother of all console shooters; the FPS-RPG that showed the MMO formula could succeed on consoles; a game world of such depth we would be awed. We instead received a game that is merely good. It is a functional shooter, with content that grows stale around the 20-hour mark: story missions on rails; patrol missions that are little more than fetch-quests; six strikes done over and over again until the fight is memorized; four gorgeous maps filled with non-scaling enemies you begin to face-roll as time goes by; and the icing on the cake, the content we should have had at launch delivered in $20 installments. Ten years? Give me a break. I really am disappointed. This was the game I had been waiting for a long time to play. It was FPS and RPG; sci-fi and fantasy; action and exploration. It had style and ambition; the people who brought us Halo backed up by the money gained from Call of Duty. It was supposed to show me that a game could be made with limits pushed far enough back that it appeared to lack them. Instead, we got this. A passable shooter with some watered-down MMO characteristics and the unnecessary (but sadly expected) PvP that does nothing more than steal resources from what should have been a solid co-op adventure title. If Destiny makes it past a year before people lump it up with Too Human, or simply forget about it, I'll be surprised. Luckily, I still have The Division to look forward too. Hopefully they can see where Destiny failed and make their game better for it. At least that way this mediocre title will have served some purpose. May the Light guide you through this unexpected Darkness. Good luck, Guardians. EDIT (9/20): I think the line discussing The Division is a bit harsh. Destiny is in no way, shape, or form a failure, nor is it even mediocre. I think it failed at what it was intended to do, in many (but not all) ways, but it is a good game.

  • I don't understand why you aren't giving it a chance at all. This game has been out for only about 2 weeks? The game isn't going to be a FPS with shit DLC and bland gameplay. It's going to expand once you give it time. It's not like they could shove all they wanted into the game right this minute because it has to progress. This game is going to do well overtime, trust me. But Bungie has to analyze things closely for the time being and make sure they can provide what we want in the future. You're expecting way too -blam!-ing much out of this game man, and so are most people who trash it. I just say give it a little time to grow.

    • Over all Destiny is a solid 10 for a console RPG-MMO. That said I do understand how when you compare Destiny to other PC RPG-MMO games it pails in comparison, but those games also had to start somewhere. If Destiny follows suite and keeps upgrading the gameplay and features to match and surpass other RPG-MMO they have the potential to push WOW out of the spotlight. Only time will tell.

      • Well you quite summed it up for the most of us. I've been popping into the forum since release day as I wasn't quite sure I was the only one who felt that this game was held up on a high pedestal of promise by Bungie. Then the reality of actual game-play and progression felt super short and kinda cheap. Yeah it looks pretty and plays smoothly, but the longevity of an actual MMO is not so much in the prettiness, but in the abundances of endgame content, community and guilds. My mates and I have tried to make Destiny work, but there are just too many failings to actually achieve any kind of longevity. Sadly 1 mate moved onto something else within the first week citing the lack of story and the sheer gap between level 18 gear and level 20 ready for raiding content. They said that if we have to grind our asses off in free roam to get gear good enough that allows us to do strikes or raids, that is such a fail, not to mention the chance the grind turns up level 16-19 crap gear constantly. Where are the level 20 story missions that actually reward dedicated level 20 gear? Not present. The last 3 of us held out for this weekend, but sadly the repetitive strikes with rewards of level 16-18 crap and an occasional extremely rare level 20 blue drop, poorly balanced crucible and the insane idea of cryptarch sealed the deal. A couple of legendary items of average use and some bought gear with points from a flawed point/rep system left us all going "Why are we doing this?" Sadly it's onto better things. The more I think about it, the cryptarch is actually the worst feature of the game. It goes against common sense and any actual MMO loot system worth playing. What ever person thought it's a smart idea to reward a player with a legendary engram, build excitement, only to dash hopes with the chance of rewarding a green or a blue is just mad. It's probably the one feature that has done the most damage to Destiny as a whole. Reward! then Deflation in most instances is just plain stupid logic. Valencewolf I don't think that you were wrong at all to mention The Division, with all the money Bungie have spent on Destiny, hopefully The Division can learn from these forums, they are a gold mine for suggestions on what a long lived MMO shooter should be like. Long lived for a start. Destiny has a 10 year roadmap? Sadly it only just made it past 10 days for 4 of your initially excited players. 4 out of 4 all gone.

        • heard the max level is 30 before DLC is available. pretty disappointed with that if its true. why was i not given the expansion pass with my white PS4 destiny bundle? is this the treatment we should expect from you Bungie? giving us half of a game and charging an additional $35 for the rest of it? what's with the utter lack of planets? no Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, and their moons? if you expect us to be satisfied with a race of Mass Effect enemies, a copy paste of the enemies from Halo, and some retarded looking Gears of War like soldiers... on the same maps over and over again... you're sorely mistaken. I will definitely be looking for video reviews of the expansion pass before I buy it, if at all.

          • The player movement is very smooth and the guns feel great. If Destiny just had a story, more character levels, missions, and maps, it would be nearly perfect... It's really a shame this wasn't all included at launch because there is so much potential.

                • Sir, Please be careful and don't let the door hit you on the way out. Why must people poo poo a game that is an obvious success because it fell into a different niche than they were expecting... I have three suggestions for you in the future: 1 - watch videos of beta before you shell out your money. 2 - Wait for reviews of said game and watch as others get to have all that game day fun! 3 - Gamefly Hard to complain about a game that basically cost you nothing, you're already subscribed. This is not meant to be mean or cruel, just a way of letting you know that many others find this game VERY enjoyable and your opinion is just that, your opinion. It is not shared by me.

Have to say I agree with the TC's sentiment. I like this game but it is disappointing. 1) only 6 strikes, which becomes a problem because strikes are the only reliable way to farm marks (outside of world events). I swear I have gotten the archon priest strike 3 times in a row doing a lvl 24 playlist, and this has happened on multiple occasions. This makes the game become quickly repetitive and boring to play (at least on the PVE side). 2) Lore/story. I actually don't care about story in an action/shooter/online rpg so much as I care about the lore of the world. I didn't expect to play this game to jerk my emotions around. What I do care about is whether the lore is blatantly stupid or not. The light vs. the darkness. You can't get a more generic good vs. evil plot than that. I remember playing warframe in which the story was nonexistent but the lore was amazing. The lore in this game just sounds like a bunch of made-up sci fi words. The temple of Accra? What is that? what is the context, and why should I care when ghost mentions that in a mission? There is absolutely zero motivation to be interested in these lore details if they aren't given context to be interesting. 3) Each world feels restrictive and similar. Half of each world is a sparrow race track. The worlds themselves look beautiful, but when you break them down, there is nothing functionally different from each world other than missions/enemy types/materials. The moon is a white mars with no cabal, mars is the red moon with cabal, Venus has plants, Earth is similar to venus. Okay? I'd rather they just center the gamearound future earth ONLY yet allow us to visit different locations on earth where the various alien races have invaded/destroyed. The story could have centered on how the guardians would reclaim Earth as the human homeworld.

                            • I understand you. I think Destiny disappointed on 2 major grounds that nobody expected: 1. Lack of social options. 2. Mediocre story. That said I thoroughly enjoy the game and will continue to until the end.

Honostly I love this game but I have to agree. This game is getting harder and harder to turn on. Got my first legendary engram and it ended up being two strange coins. That's Cool but I have been playing a long dam time and, being lvl 24, getting legs is gonna be the only way to lvl up anymore. Doing the same bounties every day gets boring, duh. Cool fact: I like to look at the trophies from time to time and see the percentages of players who achieve them. The trophy rewarded to a player for simply obtaining ONE exotic piece of armor and equipping has only been been given to 6.8% of players. Too low?

                              • I agree completely, I was really looking forward to this game. But it really comes off as half assed. We have a stripped down MMO and a stripped down FPS clumped togeather. The grimoire is just lazy, and shouldn't exist for anything but footnote lore. I've said it before and I'll most likely say it again, the launch version is no more than a slightly extended tutorial. It's to bad, I really wanted this to be a game I could get into. That story is so hack though... Why didn't they even make us go to NPCs to start the missions, instead its just a blurb where you might recognize the voice in a loading screen. Why is sniping no more than a joke in this game. The pvp maps are so small you would never need more than the mid range scope. Why are all but two of the PVP maps tiny. Just a few among many questions. The only thing keeping a lot going is gambling with the Cryptarch, and that guys the biggest troll in the game, dink just gave me a green for a blue engram when I'm mostly legendary, and said "Hope thats useful for you"...

                                • Do you not understand what you payed for (consumers)? This game is fun for the first 5 hours at most. After that, you should understand that every aspect of this game is repetitive and offers no variety. Sure, the environments looks good and the game mechanics are tuned. But we shouldn't have to wait (for DLC) see what this game is all about. When you pay full price you should get a full game. Strike missions are the same, patrol missions are the same, story missions are the same, enemies are predictable, weapon drops are not worth the time, and so on. You have to run through the same areas in hopes of getting rewarding with something good. The story has no depth and lacks substance. And most of all, the multiplayer is nothing special. I can compare it to a limited version of a futuristic Call Of Duty. Basically a run and gun shooter. Multiplayer thrives on team play, requiring you to play with friends if you want to stand a chance during rounds. Yet Bungie does not understand that not all (if most) players don't have 3 to 6 friends to play with at all times. This game falls short of what I, and many other, hoped it would be. I am glad I did not buy the DLC when I picked up the game from Gamestop and I will most likely take it back for store credit towards the Halo Master Chief Collection. Sorry Bungie, but you failed the gaming community.

3 things disappointed me about Destiny 1. Lack of a good narrative in the campaign. I thought it was going to have a pretty decent story kinda like halo. But it didn't really. Plus alot of the events are heavily underplayed. An example would be that you recovered a shard from the traveler that the Hive were using to drain energy from the traveler. This could have been epic but it was so underplayed and it felt like nothing even happened at all. 2. Way too much busy work and the over reliance on daily activities. My friends are way behind me in light level because I have more time to play. But it will take them a decent amount of time before they can get enough light level so we can raid together. If they wanted to make the level cap low so you could play end game with your friends why would they then make it so that it takes playing for a week straight in order to get enough light level to play raids? That doesn't make any sense. Plus this game feels like a job sometimes, I have to do my daily bounties, then my daily story mission, then my weekly strikes, it's WOW all over again and that's why I left the game. Just let me leave the game for a couple weeks and don't make me feel like I am missing out. I just don't think the way this game is designed is good design. Regardless of what the genre is. Honestly after playing so many games that are "hardcore" and make you do alot of bullshit to make you play the sub fee I really just wanted a super casual shooter to play with friends that had optional challenging content. Destiny Disappoints heavily in this aspect for me and many other people that I talk to when I group up in destinylfg.net 3. The absence of the open world they displayed at E3 2013. At E3 2013 they turned around and they said that we could explore that vast open world we saw beyond the cosmodrone. Unfortunately it seems like this feature got cut out or they lied. One of the two. I think this would have allowed for a better campaign, better much larger public events, more interesting activities since there would be more room for creative missions, and random events akin to Gta V and Red Dead Redemption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwegkFBT--A&list=FLHlF92KXgHyftWkLVxE8I4Q#t=86 Massive disappointment.

OP, you weren't harsh in the least. I just hope Destiny turns things around. Come the day The Division is released, I'd like to still feel committed to Destiny, but right now as things stand, I can't claim that boast.

                                    • This is it.......there is no ADVENTURE......no EXPLORATION, that even the OLD MMO and RPGs have. I just want as you said a large free world where I meet random people where we fight through unexpected areas and enemeiesnto get to a city for example, fighting through a jungle world and swamp for 3 hours, to get to a desert which leads to this beautiful city in the distance. Not shoot, kil animation, spawn enemy, increase enemy spawn number, health and damage. You shoot shoot 2 hours shooting equels death animation. Drop a item. Done. Next repeat same.

                                    • Anywhere that expectations are set this high, some degree of disappointment is bound to manifest somewhere (maybe with the exception of the Breaking Bad finale). I still love Destiny and plan to continue playing it, but so much was promised that it's difficult not to feel like it could've been more. As the beginning of a new IP, however, I'll remain optimistic. Watch Dogs this was not.
