Engrams

I read at one point that it is best to save up all of your engrams until you are level 20 and then decode them so that they are turned into better gear. Any logic in this? Would be great to know things like this before we play in case we go about things the wrong way. Does anyone else have any tips to help people gear up / level up in the most efficient way? Any further advice on experience that our weapons / gear earn as they level up themselves?

  • Engrams do scale with your lvl, but you can also dismantle the gun/armor for $ and parts, so it's better to save the higher quality engrams for later, but scrap the lesser ones

In the beta, I did a ton of hive blasting in explore mode (at the Skywatch) and got a ton of engrams. It is very much worth it to cash them in and dismantle the acquired guns. I think levelling up the cryptarch was the only efficient way to get rare guns (and legendaries), at least in the beta. Edit: I also recommend doing this to avoid buying from him. Use your glimmer for nifty ships or something else with the money you'll save

    • You can tell what level the engram is by the color before you pick it up, so picking up white ones will give you uncommon items regardless of your level.

    • Don't save any exotic engrams as they'll be lvl 20 no matter what level you use them. Legendary could vary a little though so maybe save those.

    • In the beta if you got an engram say at level two you could save it until level 8 and it would be level 8.

You would run out of space way before you hit lvl 20. Just decrypt them and lvl the cr@p out of your cryptarch. There's no limit on the amount of engrams you can pick up. Plus the higher level rewards for leveling him up are quite good.

    • Seems like it'd be a pain to level up the cryptarc without decoding them. You get experience buying from him, but it'd go much faster decoding as well. Maybe after you max his rep out it'd be beneficial to save them, but someone else will have to chime in on that.

    • I'm sure deej has already said that the loot is the lvl you are when you get it so wouldn't work

    • You'll come along better gear during loot drops in any modes so I'd advise use engrams immediately.
