The rewards are completely random as is who gets the rewards. I watched people at the top and at the bottom of the leader boards get rewards. As for th description I believe it says get exotic gear as a reward. Meaning it can be an piece of equipable items, from weapons to gear to ships to sparrows, not specifically one or the other.
