next gen is really...quiet?

Ever since Got my xbox one, I knew I'd have to make friends because none of mine got one. Eight months later, I haven't really heard anything except the occasional angry titan fall player. Coming into the destiny beta, I had a deja vu moment of saying to myself, "now I can finally meet some people." Well, after a few hours in the tower hearing only metaphorical crickets I realized, next gen is really quiet. I've played bungie games since I got my xbox, and those games facilitated some of the best social moments I've had on video games. Whether it was joining random custom game lobbies and having a blast, making a friend in a CTF match by flying each other in a hornet, or feeling the burn in my index finger from holding down the trigger to complete the six hour long vidmaster achievements. I cherish these memories and have been excited at the opportunity to make new ones in Destiny. However I can't do that if every guardian I meet is as talkative as a statue due to 'enhancing' my destiny experience. I think it's great that you (bungie) are taking destiny super seriously as it will end up being a great game. On the other hand your pushing the envelope. I don't want my destiny experience to be solo. I want to have an experience with someone and then hang with them. Thats what I loved about halo, was the fact it brought people together. If your touring this as a social game, without chat its far from that. How is a guardian going to say "wow how did you get that sick gear." Message me? If thats the sociability your striving for, quite honestly it sucks. I really want to have amazing moments in this game with new friends. Simple solution: implement chat in atleast the tower, with the options via the pull up menu to selectively mute or mute all. in game chat is essential to making this a social game and making those special bungie moments into friendships Otherwise destiny is great Edit: After the beta I joined a clan because I knew I would want people to play with. So I'll have people to play with, but the point of this post was to express my dismay at the silence

    • I've had the same problem whilst being on Xbox One. Barely anyone talks, when you see people with mics, they usually are making iritating sounds, though I have made a few friends on Titanfall only within the last month.

I don't think that will do anything. Most I know who played, turned Prox off as soon as they heard another player. I think as long as there is an option to not communicate, people won't. It was the thing that killed me in Crucible...if I wasn't with my friends, communication was non existent. It seems to be a growing trend that people only want to communicate with people they know, even if it's not IRL. I wish this wasn't the case, but it's something I noticed more and more starting with Reach....Co-op campaigns, with nothing but crickets, Firefight that might as well just be score attack, H4 MM, SpOps, Zombies in CoD. I mean, Not even a "Heads" if they accidentally Huck a grenade at ya! It's sad, as I had great times meeting new players back during the early days of Live.... I miss those days.

      • I agree about the silence being stupid as hell, but I'm not so sure about the Tower as the only place with voice chat. I mean, there are so many damned people in that thing at a time, it'd be a mess. Truthfully, I think that having voice chat activated for strike teams and your team in the Crucible would be enough for me. The problem is that the game is absolutely silent on its own, and that's going to kill any attempt at a social environment in the game itself. People talk about the forums and shit, but that's the internet, not part of the game itself. The forums may have some kind of social environment, but the game won't, and that's stupid.

        • this is probably because many users are using the out of game party system on xbox one, or they do not want to cause accidental kinect commands.

          • Couldn't agree more, i feel like next gen consoles should be in a place where it is possible to get these social online mmorpgs, i have still yet to play an mmorpg that has voice chat proximity in an open environment, was really hopping to see this in Destiny. It seems like next gen should be encouraging social encounters not the opposite, and destiny is not the first or last perpetrator in this crime.(Yay for melodramatics).

          • I feel as though ever since xbox360 had the party chat option, people stopped talking in-game making it less likely to meet people

            • While I agree that Destiny, and xbox as a whole, needs more communication, I also understand why it dropped off in the last few years. I think a lot of people are just sick of 10 year olds swearing and acting like 90's hood rats, sick of people bullying people because they don't have a k/d of 10 to 1, sick of people blasting their music through the headset, and just sick of the rude people in general. The online forum, including gaming, has given people too much room to be an asshole without consequences. I used to love chatting with people and making new gaming friends, but now it's just to damn hard to do that.

                • Go play a round of Call Of Duty Ghosts. How long did it take before you selected MUTE ALL PLAYERS? Enough said. Thank you Bungie for shutting down the a$$holes who never shut up on mic chat. Silence is golden.

                    • Saying "use the forums" makes the sociability of this game about equivalent to putting a personal ad out on craigslist. Sure you can meet a few people, but who knows what the hell your gonna get. Who knows if they can fit in with the rest of your friends, if they communicate and play well. Or are they just fun to play with.

next-gen aka current-gen? this generation so far.... (PS4/Xbone) Indie Shit Games HD remakes wow! just wow! This Gen is the worst in gaming history. PS3/360 we had CoD4 till those big games show up. PS4/X1 got nothing! MOSTLY the PS4

                        • Unfortunately this new gen has no good games until 9/9/14 and from that moment on we should see a pick up in the release of games but if you think xbone is bad ps4 has absolutely nothing in stuck playing pinball

                          • This game will fail at being social until larger parties are introduced. Playing with 2 or 5 other people is not a social experience. We need the ability to have a large group of players enter a chat room and join the same missions, even if on different fireteams...

                          • Fireteams, sir, fireteams. Just invite people to them. Set yours to open. I've met a number of people doing that. Granted though, I honestly feel as though if I'm not already in a fireteam with at least one other person I should be grouped in with everyone else in the same boat when I go to do PVP or a strike.

                          • The silence is Destiny is not cause people are not talking. Bungie purposely has no voice-chat in the game UNLESS you are in a Fireteam, meaning actually inviting people to group. So if you did the Strike mission and got your group through matchmaking, no voicechat. You join into PvP by yourself there is no voicechat. From what I read they said this was on purpose so some players don't ruin other players experience. I can understand that to a degree. After hearing player feedback on this they may eventually add more voicechat in game. And I don't find xbox silent at all. Usually what you have to do is get in parties and talk to people. When I use to play TitanFall I was constantly getting in Parties with random people. Just got to make a little extra effort

                            • I was expecting to be playing Destiny alone on the 360, I was convinced i would need to upgrade to the Ps4 or One. To my surprise however, I think roughly 3 of my 70 friends online are going nxt Gen. I now have no reason to upgrade until I so desire :) (I did want to do Destiny next gen tho...)
