I don't seem to be the only one experiencing this in the beta, but whenever I switch my special weapon, say from a sniper rifle to shotgun, my special ammo count is reduced to zero. I thought that perhaps it kept a separate pool per weapon, but when I switch back to my initial weapon the ammo count remains zero. Is switching weapons deleting my special ammo? I've tried this with primary weapons and I do maintain ammo counts between primary weapons. This seems to be a unique issue with special weapon ammo. I haven't seen a post reporting this, but it definitely seems like a bug due to, if nothing else, inconsistent behavior between tiers of weapons.

Think about it, irl if your running around picking up ammo for sniper, then magic happens and you have a shotgun, you'll have no ammo for it cause you were picking up sniper ammo.
-
Not a bug
-
Definitely not a bug, they talked about it in some of Bungie's or IGN's videos. It's so you can't constantly switch weapons throughout a multiplayer match. Not so much a punishment but it makes sense switching from shotgun to sniper, you wouldn't have special ammo, imo
-
I don't think it's a bug & I think it makes sense
-
I feel, if it's a balancing act, that should ONLY be for PVP, not PVE
-
If swithcing from a sniper to a shotty you loose ammo, but if you just change from one damage type sniper to anoter damage type sniper you would keep the ammo, same thing on all weapons... If you kne you would meet a knight with shield you would want to use a arc damage weapon..if it was a wizard you wanted to use a solar dmag weapon... but from lets say changing from a heavy machine gun to a rocket launcher.. I dont see a prob with loosing the ammo... and if you where fast enough..before the matches started in PvP you could switch and get ammo for you're special weapon.
-
It is intended. It is the balancing for being able to switch out our guns at any time. There has been a couple of podcasts that touch on this so... Doctor Nope, working as intended.

So your saying that shotgun shells should be used in sniper rifles and fusion rifles should be able to take both sniper shells and shotgun shells?
-
I agree. I have run into that multiple times. No matter what, I should not lose the ammo switching between weapons of the same class.
-
This makes perfect sense. If not, you would just load up completely on sniper ammo, shotgun ammo, and fusion rifle ammo before going to do anything. Part of a special weapon is that it has a speciality. You shouldn't be able to have every single ammo for every type of gun. Pick the special weapon you want to use. Want to switch it up mid strike? That's fine. But you better scrounge up new ammo for that.
-
I agree the mechanic is seriously flawed for PVE, in PVP I love it cause you have to PLAN your matches not just run and gun as some go. But seriously tho you get loot and you cant use it till you get back to the tower. One funny thing I have noticed is when you get revived all your primary and special get filled up, not the supers tho.
-
Not a bug they do that so you can't just switch your special or heavy on the fly, especially in PvP.
-
Not a bug Bungie said there would be a downside when switching weapons in battle.
-
Not a bug. Great idea. You can get the ammo packs in the tower
-
So you expect shotgun shells to turn into sniper rifle bullets!
-
They siad it would do this
-
When you think about it, a shotgun shell wouldn't fit into a sniper rifle. So specialty ammo not carrying over makes sense. Then again how do auto rifle bullets work in a revolver?
-
They said it would do that if you switched
-
I can understand them turning it off in PVP but in PVE that shiz is annoying.

Edited by TheOrcBarbarian: 7/28/2014 4:39:58 PMMany people have said this is a balancing mechanic, and I agree that separate ammo counts will create a problem. But how about tracking the ammo containers picked up. Unopened boxes can be applied to other weapons in inventory, while opened boxes are discarded. Example. I have one round left in my sniper (SR) and I pick up a green ammo container. If I reload my SR I will get 4 rounds, but I could switch to shotgun (SG). Lose the 1 round left in my SR, but get 5 rounds when I reload my empty SG.
-
It's deleted to encourage you to keep the same weapons in hand during battle. It's not a bug.
-
I thought it was a perfectly reasonable feature. Could you imagine how easy Strikes would be if you could walk in their with full sniper/shotty/FR rounds?
-
This is a balancing mechanic. It stops me from having a shotgun and sniper when I need them. Example: I start off with my shotgun, I have ammo for it. I switch to my sniper and it is empty, fair enough, I pick up some ammo for it and post up outside. Start getting long range kills. I decide to move inside for some flag captures. Oh I know... I will just switch to my shotgun to have the advantage in close quarters. Then when I go outside I will switch to my sniper to have a long range killer. Switch back and forth for whichever I need with no penalty. Balancing mechanic.

I like that your special am disappears "it's called special ammo for an reason" if it didn't disappear where's the difficulty in that??? Keeping special ammo just feels noob like...
-
I can understand for PvP... But to lose the special ammo in PvE?? Stupid.
-
Special and heavy weapons lose ammo if you change weapon type
