I'm guessing that I just really don't understand the matchmaking, or the lobbying (if there is any), or how playing with others online is supposed to work when doing story missions together. The first thing I did after the amazing starting mission when you first boot up the beta was the first story mission, going to get the Warp Drive. I set my online settings to Public so that anybody could come join me in the fight, the level loads and three other dudes show up right next to me. Cool! They summon vehicles, get in and drive off... I can't do that yet, but I had hoped that they were just going to beat me to the checkpoint and we'd go from there. Nope. They were off doing something completely different from my mission. They weren't even working together, each was doing their own thing. Clearly, the game just threw us in the same map together, but didn't bind our paths any more than that. An hour, and sixteen deaths, later (I played on hard, against the game's advice)...I finished the mission, alone. Kind of bitter-sweet even though I loved the gameplay. I guess there's a difference between someone being in your fireteam and someone just being in your map, I gather; but that just brings me to question the purpose of playing online with people outside of your fireteam. What do I care if there's some guy off doing something else in the same session with me if it doesn't involve what I'm doing? If I want a fully cooperative experience online, am I doing something wrong in setting up the mission? Of course another hour in the beta when I get home today will probably have all of these questions resolved, but I thought it might be kind of fun to chat about it with fellow Guardians. :)
