Reality Check

I find forums (especially gaming forums) to be interesting places. People share a lot of information and knowledge, and there's always interesting blogs being written or discussions going on. Unfortunately, more often than not, people tend to make the mistake of thinking that the opinions shared vocally in a forum somehow represent the status quo. For better or worse, this has never been, nor will it ever be the case. Without making a call on whether or not it is justified, looking through the typically popular forums one would think that Battlefield 4 was going to dominate Call of Duty: Ghosts. The amount of hate and ridicule threads for CoD:Ghost on most forums has been out of control. One might even be mistaken in to believing that NOONE was going to play CoD:Ghosts. But here we are 4 - 6 weeks from launch, and according to VGChartz, the number of pre-orders of CoD:Ghosts nearly double that of BattleField 4. Even with VGchartz inaccuracies, this is still a significant difference in preorder numbers. Another (and perhaps more poignant) example show preorders for Ryse: Son Of Rome sitting significantly higher than Knack; again this seems to go against the grain of general chatter on forums about these games. Let me make it clear that I'm not trying to claim that CoG:Ghosts is better than BF4, or that Ryse or better than Knack; simply that I think we tend to forget that forum goers are a select group of people who don't represent mainstream opinions.
