Early Commitment to a Console?

Take my advice folks. "Committing" now is pointless. You will commit when the money leaves your hands. Right now you can only have an opinion of preference. Why give either company any commitment? Although I'm a big Xbox fan, I've owned other consoles before. I share everyone's concerns about the One, although not for exactly the same reasons. I'll go through them one at a time. First and foremost, there is the price. Hey, I'm cheap. It takes a lot to motivate me to part with my money. A cheaper entry price certainly appeals to me. But the important question is why is the PS4 cheaper? Because they unbundled their technology. They took the Eye out if the picture. So for comparable equipment, it's down to a $40 difference. Since I'm likely to want the whole package, that's not a big enough difference to push me one way. What about the Eye and Kinect? There is a lot of pushback about the Kinect being required. I'm not sure I share this concern. Why not require it? How else do you ensure developers actually use this extremely interesting technology? It's only irritating because as an optional add-on, it leads to annoying gimmick functions. A developer cannot afford to put to much into it at the risk if alienating too many gamers that chose not to opt in. Even though I still prefer a controller, I for one would like to see something come of this. Then of course there is the on-line requirement. I cannot remember the last time I played while not being on-line. It seems to be a pointless worry in this day and age. Of course it's not just the being connected. It is what Microsoft plans to do with that. The DRM tools supplied by the XB1 are unnerving to say the least. They've told us that we can still sell and buy used games. That's a good thing, but their system leads us to question what the cost will be. What they need to understand is that I only have what I have to spend on games. It won't change much year to year. They won't magically create more revenue. They'll just move it into different hands. If the plan is to cut the pie differently, go ahead. Knock yourselves out. If they believe they can create a bigger pie, or a new pie, they are sorely mistaken. Many of you are upset about the lack of ability (as of this point) to borrow or lend games. I have almost never done much of this, so I don't care much. There is part of this that appeals to me though. Right now, I have two 360's in the house. We have to make choices about which machine is the primary for any particular game. With DLC, and other stored parts of the game, it isn't always a good idea to go between consoles. With the sharing with family function, that is no longer a concern. One copy of the game covers both locations. How cool would that be to play Destiny with my son without split screen or buying two copies? In the end, there is the biggest issue: my friends. It doesn't matter what I think if all my friends go one direction, I'm likely going to go that way too. I am a social gamer at heart. Some games are great by myself, and I love those too. But I love playing with people, and starting from scratch on a friends list doesn't sound like much fun. So what am I going to do? I'm going to wait. I'm going to wait until we learn more. I'm going to wait and see if Microsoft figures out how to market better. I'm going to wait until I see where the crowd goes. I'm going to wait until the game that most motivates me to upgrade (Destiny of course) is available. So I've got a lot of time to think this through. And in the end, as I've said before, it'll probably be choice of two great machines. But great or not, there'll be no committing until I have too.

There's only two reasons to adopt/commit early: 1) New Shiny thing 2) To show support for a product that you believe caters to your interests. Many agree that this generation of consoles has over stayed its welcome. I am tired of playing console games that have jaggies everywhere and are at sub-HD and run at a cinematic 24 fps, especially when I have been playing games at 1080/60fps on my PC for already a while now. That said, I don't think anyone can be blamed for wanting to buy a new console day one. As for the PS4 vs X1 argument, more people are on board for PS4 because consumers believe Sony needs to be rewarded for being the white knight (which is hilarious, because they're a business just like any other company - but I do think they offer consumers a better proposition than MS currently). I was an early adopter for a lot of consoles, most recently, 3DS, WiiU, and PSVITA. All three of the consoles collected dust for at months without play during game droughts (haven't played the WiiU really since launch, Pikmin changed that... and windwaker HD will be glorious). You could say I am an idiot and a stupid consumer. But games are a big interest of mine and it's worth it for me. Plus, somebody has to buy the consoles day one, or else they will fail, never mature, and subsequently the "smart" consumers will never get to experience the great game library's that the systems could have built. edit: WOWwtf, why did I waste my time typing this up for a dead thread that was bumped...

        • Microsoft had already kicked the legs out of the core when Kinect came around (to extent life of console of course and introduced crappy games no one asked for) which is now confirmed bull puckies. The new support of the Xbox 360, no one asked for, in same fashion. Microsoft justified closing down Xbox 1 live servers to add more room in our friends lists which never came to pass. In actuality it was no longer profitable and like most software decisions by Microsoft was a greed-driven decision. There are many examples and Microsoft needs to sell off the Xbox brand. I am waiting, but not spending one more dime on a Microsoft product!

          • I won't support Microsoft's policies even though I do always have an online connection (most of the time). I have made a commitment to the PS4 now and pre-ordered it so that I will get my console on release before they run out.

            • all I can do is agree. Last generation I was in the middle of High School. So I had to make a choice. I loved (still do) Halo, and Fable (admittedly I wished for a Blinx 2) so I went with the Xbox 360. Prior to this I had an Xbox, and a PS2, but this time I only could invest in one. This generation I am working in my desired field, and I graduate this summer/fall from college. I already decided I want to buy both systems (as well as WiiU if it makes it to 2014) for exclusives. I don't want to miss anything this generation if I can afford to. I don't understand the mindset (if you have the monetary back up) to only be loyal to one brand. I mean, if you go to a Baskin Robin's 31 Flavors you probably don't get the same flavor every time, because you are allowed options. I think if you can financially have options with gaming, you should take that course. For now though I am bending my wallet to Destiny, and since the majority of my important friends are getting a PS4 for now, I am also going to get a PS4 first.

                • Waiting probably is the best thing to do. I've already decided on the Wii U though, since I know it will have games I want to play, some of which we've already seen at E3. Plus, the gimmick of the Wii U is actually kinda useful to me.

                • You always have very valid points in your posts! My biggest quarrel right now is the price difference. Being on a pretty strict budget can really make that PS4 price look very appealing. It had a few games that really intrigued me and wanting to know more. If it was backwards compatible that would of been the deal breaker for me. I'm a big Xbox 360 guy though at heart. I have a core group of friends who I've been playing with for many years now. Old habits die hard and what direction they go I'll more than likely try to go in the direction they go if I can manage too. It's still way to early for me to make a true decision since the games I'm looking forward to aren't coming out until next spring.

Sure the PS4 has some good features too but those don't give me that same feeling its like I have underlying doubts about it that I can't quite put my finger on and I bet people feel the same way with the X1 so its all about personal preference.

                        • To quote Jeff Ross. NEVER TOO SOON! I am going PS4. The people I want to play Destiny with are going that way and the price point is where I want it. The wife and I do buy used game and we trade with my nephew who is on an air card for internet. The PS4 would still allow us to keep doing that. I might get the X1 later on down the road but it will be a long time in coming. I am not always going to be able to be online, I am not a fan of Kinect, and once again I like trading and buying used games easily.

                              • Its stupid, but it comes down to the controller for me, xbox controller is so much better and is a huge percentage of the experience, its the only physical contact we get while playing and is a big part of the enjoyment. As long as the games look roughly the same on each console, which im sure they will, its xbox one for me.

I'm going to get both at some point down the line, so I don't see a problem committing to one now. The PS4 has the advantage in my books, and it's got a few titles I'm really looking forward to.
