Why is there a lot of hate towards Facebook on these forums?

No it doesn't, at least it doesn't if you have the least bit of common sense. Someone harassing you on Facebook? Block them. Easy as that. If they harass you in real life, that's not Facebook's problem at all, (and you should notify the principal or police about harassment in real life).

Yeah...but it's not supposed to replace talking in real life. It's supposed to be a tool to keep in touch with others far away, or to chat with others when talking isn't an option. Can you not handle talking to someone in person when you see them, and chatting them when you don't?

Sorry, that's a problem with your friends. Get better ones. Unfriend annoying people, and friend people you actually want to talk to. Problem solved!

No. They are not out to get you. If you aren't some criminal, why would they care about one of the hundreds of millions of people that use Facebook?

Then...don't put any? All you need is your name (Not even full name, you could use a nickname or abbreviate your last name.) People seeing your name and a picture of you (which is optional but recommended) is not gonna kill you.

I've never had this problem on facebook as well, I mean I've certainly had some hella passive aggressive posts and bitchy messages but it's not particularly bullying.

Facebook is a useful tool for actively connecting with people and passively staying in touch. When you share things on Facebook, it's because you have a group of people who genuinely care about you. People who really hate Facebook do so because they don't see its value. There are a few reasons for this, but on this forum, it can probably be whittled down to just one.

7 RepliesI...actually approve of this thread and agree with everything you've said here. Social media is just another tool for interpersonal interaction, and can be used however you want to use it. I use my social networks to promote my activist work and for finding people I can talk to about interesting things.

I don't hate FB but I think people who spend a lot of time on it need to get out more. Same as I think for people who spend too much time on these forums or any other online forums.

People who dislike Facebook are either - fails of life, gimps, unpopular or generally are stupid for doing something they'd regret. I use Facebook a lot, but I never, ever post or do anything which I would regret. I hardly upload photos, only profile pictures, then which I hide from the newsfeed. It is just easier sometimes. I don't put personal information in, only my location and name. Everyone on facebook is not retarded, some are, not everyone. People just like to have laugh and loosen up. Facebook is a great tool! I love it. Don't abuse it, and don't put yourself in a position where you can be abused.

People that are ambivalent towards Facebook commonly get cast as hating the system. There is a middle ground.

Because people document any and everything that they do on it. It's mindless spamming. I don't use it anymore because I was getting nothing out of it when I logged in. I know who my close friends are now, I don't need to listen to 150's people problems or thoughts anymore.

I assume they're just throwing out lame excuses for not having one when it's probably just because they're antisocial. Not saying there's anything wrong with not having a Facebook but these forums are known for being composed of mostly social introverts and therefore they would probably not be located on any [i]social[/i] media websites.

1 ReplyI don't bother using it anymore, especially after Zucky took the company public and had to monetize the hell out of it to please Wall Street. Everything you say and do on Facebook is for sale and they keep trying to come out with new methods of extracting money from advertisers. Next up is video advertisements in your Newsfeed. Enjoy that.

Those are all pretty lame excuses imo. I can understand however, if someone only has a small circle of friends and rather not join just to keep in contact with them, when they're perfectly capable of calling/texining those 2-6ish people. Back in my earlier days of high school, I only had a group of 3 friends. If we wanted to know what each other was up to; we'd call. Now, having a lot of friends and acquaintances, it's very convenient to keep in contact with them by Facebook. People change their phone numbers all the time and don't really have the time to go texting every friend they've ever had, for the sake of keeping in contact with them. It's also a great way to see what they're up to. If you don't have any plans on the weekend, you can just check on Facebook and see what the majority of people are planning. On top of that, it's not just PEOPLE you can get updates on, but nearly anything; games, tv, movies, bands, etc. I know when there's a new update for a game I like, because of Facebook. I know all the lasted news about the Marvel movies, because of Facebook. I know when a show I watch is coming back from a break, because of Facebook. It just makes things a lot more convenient. The frequent idiotic statuses along with spamming pictures, can be quite annoying but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.
