Are you intelligent?

If so, describe what makes you this way and how others can be more so :D

  • No, in fact i`m pretty sure i`m a tad bit handicapped. My only comfort is that i`ve always been able to admit to this and my other flaws I mean it must mean something right.

It really depends what you mean by intelligence; wisdom, raw knowledge or logic. I suppose as a general list : I can point out and accept my own faults, and the faults of those I care about. I win 9/10 arguments/debates I get into (Excluding ones on the internet). Have good general knowledge outside of pop-culture/media. Got A's and B's in my maths and three sciences GCSEs. How other people can be more intelligent: Be observant and remember things. At least half of what I know comes from random incidents and casual conversation rather than devoted learning.

        • I'm smart enough to think for myself, which in this day and age is rare enough.

Despite what some people might think of me on this forum, I actually have scored "near genius" on IQ tests. Furthermore, I do consider myself more enlightened than others in the area I study.

          • not with knowledge of specific things, as that is not intellect, that is specialization. I do however have more common sense than people that I am surrounded by.

          • I'm a creative writer, so I'd like to think so. If I can create a world which captivates others, I have succeeded and I consider myself to be intelligent. If not? I's a doofuhs.

Jesus, posting on this forum is going to make me seem more pretentious than I already am.... Anyway, I do consider myself rather intellegent. I'll admit that the past year or so has been devoted mostly to gaming, but I still pride myself on my intellect. (is it ok if I just say smart? I'm going to look ridiculous if I impose a three sylable minimum on all nouns and adjectives) For years before it became stupid, I watched the science channel rather often, with the subjects of prehistory, outer space, and by extension of the latter, physics to a certain extent. While admittedly much of my knowledge of these subjects is basically glorified trivia, particularly the latter two, I still know a fair amount. My favorite museum is the Museum of natural history, and anyone who has heard of the Cambrian but still thinks of the Mesozoic era as their favorite era is either stupid, lying, or has differing opinions from me. I also am aware of the fact that epanding to other extraterrestrial bodies, and by extension, other solar systems, are necesarry for the prolonged survival of our species. Also, apparently light and gravity are the ripples of thing going on in higher dimensions! 0_0 That little bit of information was learned relatively recently compared to the other two, and I have considerably less information about it than the others, but I think it may be a recent revelation for everyone and such I probably shouldn't think less of myself for it. I'm guessing that my intellegence is a result of <redacted at my mother's request, srry> Anyway, my own personal definition of intellegence is different from my personal definition of smart. For me, smart is used to describe the mental faculties of a species as a whole, with no aspersions on the individual. I use intellegence to describe an individuals pursuit of knowledge, namely, do they or do they not. I think intellegence is one of the most important aspects of a person, and one of the most beneficial towards the advancement of a species. I've decided that skills sort of fit under intellegence, as they make a person more capable as a person, as long as they are practicle in some way. That said, I couldn't live without my numerous forms of entertainment. I am an athiest, as a result of my intellect. The odds of any sort of deities forming is so tiny that it uses strings (the theoretical kind) as rope. Not impossible, but barely worth betting on. In the event that they do exist, I wouldn't worship them or let them decide my morals. They may be more powerful, but I don't take orders without constructive points to back them up. It should also be noted that given time and technology their powers could be matched and then surpassed. I also don't think pi could be both infinite and never settle into a pattern. That makes no logical sense. In all of that pseudo-infinity, there is no way that it could never encounter a scenario that either ends the number or locks it into a pattern. My final theory involves time travel, though take this with a grain of salt as I haven't and in fact am not capable of doing the math. That said, it makes sense to me, so if I ever can do the math I most definitely will. The thought is, is that time traveling backwards or forwards will take you to an empty void, save for you, other time travelers, and any anomolies that may have occured thoughout time. This is because time is just another coordinate, and matter most of the time can't be in two places at once. Thoug now that I'm thinking about it the same reasoning that would allow you to interact with other time travelers would allow you to travel through time in the traditional sense... nevertheless, I still want to check this out some day. Might work if there are two time coordinates. I think Michio Kaku mentioned a theory on his blog that uses that. Alright, I'm actually making a break from science in this last part. While it is hard to overstate the importance of intellegence, you also need drive. Not ambition, but just motivation to get work done. I'm actually an example of why you need this myself. You see, I don't have motivation, mostly to do schoolwork. As a result of this, my grades are in fact terrible. All the intellect in the world doesn't do a damn if you aren't going to use it when it matters. I intend to turn myself around in this regard, but take my warning. Also, for becoming intellegent yourself, I'd recomend starting with forms of media. Go on to discovery or science channel.com and look at some of their older stuff, or watch science after 10:00. I'm pretty sure none of their game show crap is on that late. As well, your standard smart guy magzines couldn't hurt as well. Just go into the supermarket and find some good ones. I encourage doing further research into any topic that interest you. The scientific method. When applicable, use it. Because it works, bitches. It's okay if you're not interested in standard science. Learning useful skills is... I'm trying not to use the word substitute, as that implies inferiority. Okay, maybe a little but of inferiority. But hey, society needs workers, parents, and everyone else to keep the wheels turning. History won't remeber your name, but society falls apart with you. Until we replace you with robots. Then we won't need you. After that go with smarts. And as for outdoor survivalists, you're our backup plan in the event of the collapse of civilzation in a way that doesn't kill us outright. Just, if you can, learn how to make some of the more advanced tools from scratch, and maybe crank batteries if you can. I we're losing civilization, we want to be able to put it back together faster than it tool us to build it. Socialism isn't inherently evil. A well regulated market (with both socialist and capitalist aspects) ensures that people aren't able to camp in a hallway that for some reason has a rocket spawn in it and win the game because noone can every kill them. It makes it so that if you want to stay on top, you have to be the best, and that people have fair starts so that you always have the necesarry skills to stay in the game no matter where you spawned. (I really think video games are a shockingly good metaphor for enconomy.) Because no one can get a chokehold on the whole thing, it encourages people to fight smart and inovate to do well, and makes people progress as a whole. The metaphor falll apart a bit there. Still works though. Teachers are incredibly important. They pass on the knowledge that we've spent thousands of years gaining. Octopuses are very intellegent creatures, but since they don't pass on their knowledge to their young they don't progress further. Teachers are the entire goddamn reason we've been to the moon. The fact that they're not at the very least upper middle class baffles me. Is there anyhing else?..... oh yes. If you don't contribute any practical skill to society, that's okay. Entertainers make our lives better. It's not the most noble path, but as I said way up there, I can't live without my sources of entertainment. Lastly, if you're a highly technologically advanced civilization, (probably about tier 2. For example, we're tier zero, coming up on tier 1, and the UNSC is tier 2) and you haven't tried -blam!- the laws of physics yet, you're doing it wrong. And that's it I think, why I'm smart, ways for you to become smarter, and a whole bunch of philosophical shit noone asked for. Always use the DMR, this is craZboy557, signing off.

Yes, I think so. I was taught to read at a very young age and was always interested in many things, and curious. I also enjoy random facts and trivia. I like to think that's what helped/helps build my intelligence.
