Especially with shows like Big Bang Theory, and King of the Nerds. I'm constantly seeing people say things along the line of, "lol I'm so nerdy;" most of these being teenage females (one of my teachers does it also). Why do people want to be nerds now? Why is it cool?
How do you feel about it?
-
Because being smart and nerdy will land you a high paying job. Not a nerd? Your boss probably is.
-
It's the intellect and quiet nature that is admired, not the entire nerd persona. Most of society would reject someone as a mate who has bad body odor, is out of shape, and can't hold a conversation. Even if one dresses like a nerd, he is still supposed to be physically attractive, decent in social conduct, and possessing good hygene if he is to be considered as a romantic companion.
-
Who cares? It's all pointless labeling in the end anyway.
-
You mean these kinds of people?
-
Because computers are in right now, sports aren't.
-
Oh, is it cool now? I guess I'm awesome then.
-
People think it's cute. Of course, they're entirely ignorant of what a typical "nerd" is classified as, though.
-
the nerds are overpowered and need to be nerfd
-
I feel it's all subjective.

Edited by Death: 2/11/2013 12:55:41 AMSmart people get the money, we respect intelligence more now. Wait...define nerd? If it's the people I'm thinking of they will never be cool...
-
Lots of things people consider "nerdy" such as video games, are becoming much more mainstream, and a bigger part of pop culture.
-
I hate Holden Caulfield because he's a -blam!-, but all of those nerds are posers/fakes.
-
More to the point, why should or would we care what is "cool"? If we live our lives striving to meet some undefined goal set by people we may have no intention of knowing, then we have lived our lives for nothing. I believe it is better to live for something you love, calling oneself a nerd is one way of expressing this. Yet, in the end, labels do not define us and we should not be so quick to apply them to ourselves.
-
It never was, and no cool person would say it.
-
yeah...its not cool to be a nerd.
-
'Nerd# has become over sexualized
-
There are two types of nerds, the ones who like videogames and sci-fi shows, and the ones who are socially awkward and smart in school who get picked on.
-
Because society is so dumb.
-
It doesn't matter. Everyone will go back to hating it in ten to fifteen years. And then I'll have to start hiding my power level again.
-
Edited by GKR: 2/10/2013 11:38:37 PMI guess I'm a hipster too now, since I was nerdy before it was cool. I bet these mainstream noobs can't even name all five Istari.
-
It's not. If you're a proper nerd, who IMO is someone who likes anime, plays trading card games, watches MLP, and rarely leaves the house, then that's not cool, and I don't think it ever will be.
-
It's not. Hipsters watch Big Bang Theory and put on a pair of thick-rimmed glasses and call themselves nerds. Then they look at a picture of a model wearing glasses and suddenly find "nerds" hot.
-
So...I'm an involuntary hipster?
-
Its not. Not at college, anyway.
