In Halo 2 they pretty much gave up on making each weapon contribute uniquely to the game play and made them cooler looking and miildly different facsimiles. When in CE each weapon gave you different attack methods. I just remember how much better the game got when I figured out that plasma bursts took out shields and plasmas were more effective on shields while conventional weapons where better on flesh or armor. The covenant weapons actually mattered. And while those staple weapons stayed in the games they never really created any new covie weapons that did the same.
