• to answer the posters ? it is looked down upon, but will you get banned for it nope, on the superjumping note that somebody said previously I have this from bungies faq's about cheating page Q Bungie says quitting or "super jumping" isn't cheating but can't the guy I just beat leave me negative feedback and get me in trouble anyways? A Yes, they can. However, as stated above, simply having someone give you negative feedback isn't going to result in a ban. To be extra safe, avoid doing those things you think may be misconstrued as cheating. And, keep in mind, the Bungie team is working on ways to address some of these in-game glitches and exploits.

 •
Posted by: OG Fastforward To me, button glitches don't give you "an unfair advantage." As far as I'm concerned, everyone has the ability to use it, therefore, it isn't unfair.
Yes, and everyone has the ability to use a corked bat in Baseball or even take steroids. That doesn't mean it isn't unfair or cheating. It is an unfair advantage because, regardless of the fact that everyone can do it, you are making a weapon do things that it shouldn't do, an example is the BR basically shooting out of it's stock with a BXR (When performing a BXR, the point in the animation that is canceled that jumps right to the gun firing is where the stock of the gun is in the face of the enemy). As Recon has stated, it's only cheating in MM. Outside of MM, what is and isn't cheating is defined by the host of the event. When it comes to MM though, it isn't even a matter of opinion, whether you think it is or isn't cheating is not relevent because the bottom line is it IS cheating in MM, as it is also cheating on XBL (read the XBL Terms of Service that you agreed to when you made your account), though when it comes to Customs, it's still up to the host of the event to decide.

 • If anyone ever runs out of ammo and the weapon starts to automatically reload while in the middle of combat you must now sit there completely helpless while allowing the reload animation to complete. Don't try and finish your opponent off with a melee attack while you are reloading and don't even think about changing to your other gun. Sit there, allow the animation to complete, and give your enemy the free kill or you are cheating.

 •
Posted by: OG Fastforward To me, button glitches don't give you "an unfair advantage." As far as I'm concerned, everyone has the ability to use it, therefore, it isn't unfair. With super bouncing, however, I find that unfair because most of the ones used give the performer better vantage points and better hiding spots.
It's clearly an unfair advantage, and is therefore cheating. We're all reasonable people. (I hope). We should all be able to use our intellect to come to this simple conclusion. The fact that everyone can do it does not change the nature of the beast. Anyone can steal money out of the bank in Monopoly. There's nothing physically stopping anyone from doing it, and it's not prohibited by the rules. And yet everyone knows that would be cheating. Why? Because our reason says so. I've quoted two of your sentences to illustrate my point. You don't think glitches give an unfair advantage, because everyone can do it. But then you go on to say that superbouncing is unfair, because it gives the performer better vantage points, etc. You're making a judgment solely based on whether to you as the subjective observer you think it's unfair ENOUGH to qualify as cheating. (I know you prefaced with, "To me . . . ," but there are reasons to highlight your subjectivity here). You have sidestepped the issue of whether the practice belongs in the game in the first place, and have moved directly to its impact on the game to determine whether it's cheating. Back to my Monopoly example, if I take one dollar out of the bank when no one is looking, that dollar isn't likely to make much of a difference. Moreover, everyone is free to also sneak a dollar. Is it proper for me to call this fair? Is it proper for me to consider it NOT cheating? How many dollars would I need to take before it becomes an unfair advantage? How many before it becomes cheating? If I instead took the dollar from another player, would that be more or less cheating? The answer I submit is that they are all cheating. You know it, I know it, and everyone else knows it. The fact that people get away with things does not make it alright. The fact that people tolerate or sanction things does not make them alright. Yes, people are free to make their own custom house rules. They're called house rules because they deviate from the norm, for good or for ill. And even if every house adopts the same rule changes, that still would not change the fundamental rules of the original game. House rules of course are set up because people agree that a tweak here or there would be cool, or desirable. Picking on people in highschool was cool and desirable to many. Making fun of others is riotous entertainment for most of us on some level or another. Hurting people is cool when you're causing the hurt. But we should all know that just because we enjoy certain practices, sick as they may be, that doesn't make them RIGHT to do. In fact, most of the time, we're being jerks, and we should know it. Bottom line is, I, and many others in matchmaking do not consent to exploits that may be viewed by some as not "unfair enough." Without our consent, everyone should be using the established rules without looking for ways to break it. These button glitches, superbounces, etc. were all found because of efforts by people to break the game. Reminds me of the many ways to bypass entire laps in Mario Cart. They're done to break the game and do the impossible. That should be all you need to understand that it's cheating. Of course everyone is going to do what they want. People come in spectrum. There are those who believe in fighting hard on a level playing field without exploits. There are those who believe that modding the hell out of people online is wonderful entertainment. And there are people in between. Any cheat detection system, method, administration is going to have to draw a line at a point of feasibility. That line will inevitably be drawn in such a way so as not to catch all cheaters. The speeding example is highly illustrative. Speeding is speeding. We all do it because we don't think it's a big deal, and some of us get caught sometimes. It is still a violation of law. Some of us believe, and I think rightly so, that when dealing with a multiplayer environment, one should not violate the rules, regardless of how "bad" or "unfair" I think it might be. Some of us obviously don't have that moral compass to guide them. That's really all there is to it. Me, I've taken an extra step. Any time I see a superbouncer or glitcher on my team, I team kill him. I do it over and over again until I get booted, and I hope it causes him or her a loss. Feedback doesn't work, so I provide my own method of enforcement for what should be obvious: don't be a jerk; be fair. [Edited on 04.08.2007 12:25 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Demon Hunter DX2 if you speed too much it is punishable... so there must be a BXR threshold for punishment. i say once and your banned for life.... and you get castrated
If you speed to a point that is far above what others around you do, and it threatens the well-being of other individuals, then it is punishable. But if you are in a 55 MPH zone and everyone else is going 80, going 55 would be not only dangerous but moronic. But if everyone else is going 80 and you go 120, then there is a problem. And last time I checked, I am yet to hear a person be banned for Button Glitching.

With super bouncing, however, I find that unfair because most of the ones used give the performer better vantage points and better hiding spots. I also consider it unfair because people with PAL formated TVs can't do it. That throws out the "everyone can do it" argument.

 • It's the general rule of thumb that if you're having doubts about something being cheating, then it probably is.

 • I often compare botton glitching to speeding. Everyone does it the keep up with the competition, even though its illegal. And if a cop pulled over everyperson who sped, it would take away from their ability to fight against higher levels of crime. So like speeding, it is illegal, but not punishable.

 • They should be, because they are glitches that are being exploited, widely

 •
Posted by: rams4life12345 are the button glitches illegal?
It depends where you are playing. What is "fair" and what is "unfair" is dependent on who is running the game and who is playing in it. For example, if you hold a LAN, you set the rules. You can declare vehicle kills to be "off-limits" but allow super-jumping. Someone can hold a tournament and declare super-jumping improper, but animation exploits are fine. What I have seen is that Bungie has classified certain exploits as "unintentional, unfair, and unsporting" in MatchMaking but also determined that the bugs which are the root cause of the exploit are not going to be addressed. So, bugs such as; * Physics engine interacting with map geometry (ie: super-jumping) * Button presses interrupting animation timing (button "glitches") are here to stay. It is now up to players to decide on the level of acceptability and accountability they want to assign to those specific bugs and the exploitation of them.

 • i think it depends on the situation of the game and who u are playing.. like im not going to BXR someone that is struggling or i could easily kill, but if the outcome of the game depends on it or if im playing symbols then i will do it because they BXR me

 • You're exploting a glitch in the system that wasn't meant to be exploited, and it usually gives you an unfair advantage over other players. That constitutes cheating, but it usually comes down to a matter of personal opinion. EDIT: Please use the Search feature. [Edited on 04.08.2007 8:57 AM PDT]
