Bushfire season hits Australia

Bushfire season always sucks, it's a horrible start to the new year. Tasmania has been hit bad already, with thousands of people evacuating their homes and towns in order to save their lives, and now NSW is feeling the heat wave as well. Temperatures of 40+ degrees C (100+ F) caused the fire danger to reach the level 'Catastrophic', the worst possible danger level.
Just thought you guys should know. Discuss bushfires.

Nearly 10pm and i'm still sweating. This is not good for the fires. Tell you what, i'll be happy when summers gone. Decided not to go to shipfaced because it's likely to be ungodly hot.

We all received phone calls from the emergency services last night, and a warning of a "catastrophic fire" is in my area. There's a couple of strong fires south in the Nowra area, which I can smell the smoke from. And today it was hotter here than it was in the inland Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands, which was really odd, because we usually get a wonderful sea breeze down here that makes it relatively pleasant during hot days. Right now it feels like hell.[/quote] Sounds bad. I know a person in Campbelltown who told me it was pretty hot in the past day or two, and when I was down in Nowra it wasn't exactly cold.

Reached 40 degrees where I live, which isn't far away from those fires. Didn't help that I had to work (at McDonalds) today.

It can be 40 in a coastal area and be manageable because of all the water around and the large amount of shade avaliable. 40 degrees in the outback, where there is nothing to absorb the heat and everything is just radiated off the ground, it's a whole other echelon of hot. I actually got a tan around my neck where my shirt ends and my neck begins and I was only out of the city for 2 days.

48C out in central Australia. Today could have been the hottest average day in Australia. Fires everywhere. It's pretty bad, I was actually driving through Nowra on the way back from Lightning Ridge (touring, no other excuse to be driving that far) a couple of days ago and it was in the mid 40's. Lucky to get out of there when I did, when police and the fire brigade advise you to stay because leaving might be dangerous, then there is the potential for things to get out of control. I was out on a boat on Sydney Harbour today, 42 C, and I hardly felt the heat at all. Definitely the place to be on a day like this, it was really nice.
