My parents just don't understand me.

I apologize for the cliche and nonsensical title, but I figured it would grab your attention. If you're reading this, I'll assume I've succeeded. Let's just cut to the chase - my parents are naturally highly social and athletic people. They have a large group of friends, and leave the me the household most days of the week. I, by contrast, am their polar opposite. Like many others on the Flood, I am rather shy, avoidant, and introverted. I prefer a small, close group of friends and need much time alone to "recharge" so to speak. Ever since I was born, sports have been forced upon me. You name it - I've played it. They've given into my constant protests, and at this point it's come down to curling, which I have reluctantly played for the past 5 years. As I have reached the age of 15, they've given me an ultimatum. Either pick up more sports and come out of my shell, or get a job. As I mentioned before, I am highly anti-social and avoidant, and thus find it difficult to pick up either of these. Not to mention I'm undoubtedly unwilling. I definitely don't enjoy sports, and to be frank, I really don't want to grow up. Anone can admit life is hard, and getting a job and accepting that reality is the first step. It may seem naive, but this is how I feel. There is a large amount of tension between the both of us, and I'm being pressured quickly into a decision, and be extension out of my "cave", as my parents would call it. wat do flud?

I belong to a curling club in the Philadelphia area. It's a fun sport if you have the time to play a physically involving game of strategy.

 •
Posted by: xH u 7V tt 3 R If your grades are good I think they should leave you be. I'm really similar to you, my dad tells me to do more stuff but all I desire to do is hang out with friends, text people, and play Xbox. And yes, I am defiantly a shy and anxious person. But I completely understand my parents anger towards me because I am failing 3 classes right now due to utter apathy. So the point is, make your self look like you care, and try to make good grades and I think they will be satisfied. If you have good grades, and your parents acknowledge this, then they're just fascists.
Do not listen to this moron. Avoiding the problem is NOT the solution, it only furthers your problems.

I, for example, didn't want to grow up, but I had to. The earlier you grow up, the better. That's because if you start growing up now it will be a gradual change, while instead if you want more time all the experience you can gain now will be lost and you will have a -blam!-load of responsabilities all at once. Trust me: the earlier, the better.

 •
Posted by: Todge16801 Tell them this.
^^^ Or, if that doesn't work, get a job. You may get a job that you like and there are far more job options than there are sport options.

 • Getting a job will develop your sociability. I've never been very good at sports; I dabbled a bit in Rugby, but I wasn't very good at handling the ball. As such, I was really inactive until 16, when I decided to start going to gym. But yeah, get a job for now. And if you don't like sports, join the gym. At least then you can tell your parents you are getting exercise, and then get ripped.

 • Whether you like people or not doesn't change the fact that you will need to get used to some responsibility and need money to live. I've had a job since I was 15. It was nice to actually have my own money as a teenager. I'd have felt bad having to leech of my parents for everything.

 • Well in high school, if I wasn't playing sports like rugby or hockey....I was working, so it doesn't seem too unreasonable. Just look at it this way, if you go into either a team sport or work environment with a positive attitude and an open mind, there's a better chance than not that you'll meet someone you get along with. This isn't to mention all the positives that can come from doing these things. If you're thinking about going to college, you can reference playing intramural or school sports, or work experience as extracurricular activities or out of school activities. Colleges love to see students who are involved socially. [Edited on 12.07.2012 5:28 AM PST]

 •
Posted by: ABotelho I'd get a job. You'll work on being social and you'll earn money.
Do this. But if you REALLY don't want to do a job. Do weightlifting. You don't have to be social with anyone, other than your coach. You just lift, and be a boss.

 •
Posted by: Viper Skills Your situation is actually quite common, OP. You have to understand that as your parents they are only wanting what is best for you. Being highly social themselves it may be difficult for them to understand someone who is not. Having said that, they seem to have started to understand but are fearful of you becoming so shy to the point it becomes a problem. In their eyes, getting a job is a good way to go about that. It will help you ease into the professional world while at the same time sharpen your social skills. If I were you, I'd go with the job but look for a job with minimal social interaction. Admittedly, this may be difficult at your age with most job openings for you being in the food industry. Or you could compromise with them and instead of joining a sports team why not join some kind of club you are interested in at school? The goal for them seems to be you socializing. Personally, I think you would enjoy a job once you start reaping the benefits of a pay check. Living with your parents has massive benefits one of which is the lack of a need to pay for really anything at all. You could spend the money on anything you want, really.
•
Posted by: DarkVader9494 A job will help you out. It allows you to interact with others while making money. However getting a job at 15 is very difficult. I worked with friends parents, and my own parents first because I could learn in an environment where I would feel less pressured. At this point in time it's basically that meme.... "I need a job that requires 3-4 years of work experience. But I can't get a job because I don't have 3-4 years work experience".
