That depends... do you like over-hyped games that cater to casuals and are really bad PC ports? If so, then yeah, get Halo 2 Vista. Just don't come and cry here when the thing has about 50 or so compatability issues with your computer or you have reached your key limit after one use.
The multiplayer is so dead it's pretty much impossible to0 get the multiplayer achievements without trying to set up a boosting day. And I haven't seen one of those set up in a long time. They don't seem to be very successful when they do happen, either. What you should be asking is whether or not a game that sucks as much as Halo 2 is worth the money.

As for multiplayer achievements, some such as the double kill achievement might be easy enough or the ones that don't require you to kill more than a couple people. Dusk is right in that the harder ones will require you to set up a boosting lobby, however, even I can't get enough people to even to the killtacular achievement. But if you're into getting achievements, this game still isn't a bad choice. On a personal level, I think Halo 2 Vista isn't bad for campaign. The main reasons I play games always starts with campaign. Everything else is secondary. It's unfortunate that Halo 2 Vista, being all we have left of Halo 2 multiplayer, has a dead multiplayer offering right now. If you really want to experience Halo 2 multiplayer again, either convince all your friends to get that game, or wait for the rumored Halo 2 Anniversary for Xbox to come out.
I wouldn't really say that it's the last offering for it. Xbox Connect/Xlink Kai are still better alternatives to Halo 2 Vista and they have a higher population. Just because it's not exactly "official" doesn't mean it's non-existent.

Plus, it does lack the convenience and features of Xbox Live. However, I'd imagine that eventually, Xbox Connect/Xlink Kai are going to really be the only options left for Halo 2 multiplayer. I'm optimistic about a Halo 2 remake though. Hopefully the multiplayer will ve remade this time instead of just using Halo Reach or Halo 4.

 • If you want campaign, get the Xbox version. My sig shows the only advantageous thing about H2 Vista campaign (to be specific, you can adjust the level of detail to low so you don't have to put up with lag. I just did a test earlier with level of detail set to medium. I was barely able to achieve the number seen in the second picture).

Plus, on Halo 2 Vista, I can earn achievements while chatting with my friends over Live. The Xbox version no longer has any Live functionality at all. Also, despite the poor optimization in Halo 2 Vista, if you have a computer that's good enough to handle it, you shouldn't have to worry about lag. I can play Halo 2 Vista at High level detail with full Anti-Aliasing and no lag at all. Here are my specs: Intel Core i7 2820QM 8 GB RAM 3 GB nVidia GeForce GT 555M Basically it's a gaming laptop, but if a mobile CPU and GPU can run Halo 2 Vista maxed out, then you should probably look into upgrading your hardware or perhaps you have too many system processes running. Anyways, I'm confident Halo 2 Vista can run on Windows 8 tablets such as the Microsoft Surface, so if your PC has hardware considered "modern" you should be fine.

Let's just say if I were to download Battlefield 3, I wouldn't be able to play it without every single frame being slowed down. I'm not really willing to get new hardware just for one game (H2 Vista).

If you want to listen to music, use one of the other devices you own to play music. (I'm sure you have multiple. I think toasters can even play music now) There's also no reason to have Chrome up. If you want to browse the web while gaming on the PC, just use Steam. It has an in game web browser you can use. Getting better hardware won't help with most of the lag issues with Halo 2 Vista. I have hardware that far exceeds anything that Halo 2 Vista would require to run at maximum yet I constantly get issues. It's just a bad game and you can't go off blaming someone's hardware for it. I'd also like to mention that Halo 2 Vista on lowest graphical settings is the same as the Xbox version. In fact, it's better seeing as though you're most likely going to have it at a higher resolution than stretched 480p. [Edited on 07.29.2012 8:14 AM PDT]

On the lowest settings, it looks closer to halo 1. But anyways, Halo 2 on an Alienware gaming laptop running windows 8 plays perfectly with virtually no lag. Not sure if its got something to do with hardware or the OS, but it definitely works fine.

It's the game's fault and acting like it's something wrong isn't right. It might work fine for you but there is a major problem for plenty of people that has everything to do with the game and not their PCs.
The only thing i can say here is not everyone has the money to spend on a laptop like that which would still perform worse than a PC equivalent. I haven't had any issues with Halo 2 Vista (other than the infamous Can't connect to Live error due to Xfire) on old and new hardware. As has already been stated, it just appears to be a hit and miss with people. But for a game that was supposed to drive GFWL on the PC, these issues shouldn't have been there at all.

I had a little grievance sometime after I posted in this topic and I'm just about ready to put H2 Vista away. For good. I might as well get the Xbox version.

The OEM install of Windows 7 on my Alienware laptop couldn't run Halo 2 Vista. But then a clean install of Windows 7 using a retail copy, ran Halo 2 Vista just fine on the exact same hardware. The same goes with Windows 8. So far, everyone I've talked to say they can run Halo 2 just fine on Windows 8. There are currently no OEM versions of Windows 8 yet which might explain why I haven't heard of any Halo 2 issues with Windows 8.

I'm sorry if I came off as I antagonistic towards PC gaming. That is definitely not the case, seeing as Halo PC was my first Halo experience and I've spent years playing Halo PC and Custom Edition and getting to know basic and a little advanced modding before I began playing H3.

I'm just saying it runs. On many OEM installs of Windows 7, Halo 2 Vista just simply won't start up, and according to many others, they experience the same thing. As for clean installs of Windows, I can only testify that it works for Windows 8. I've only tried running Halo 2 Vista on three different computers with clean and OEM installs. However, based on those three tests, Halo 2 Vista always runs on the clean install of Windows 7, while it only ran on one OEM install. Windows 8, simply 100% of about 10 people confirmed it works. Again, performance is a different issue. I'm just talking about getting Halo 2 Vista to simply run. Halo 2 Xbox looks most similar to Medium settings because of the texture detail. If you look at the hand holding the sniper rifle, you'll notice the level of detail on the xbox version is closest to Medium on the PC version. It's true that they're all really similar, but High Quality definitely does have a noticeable difference compared to the Xbox version. Also, I'm basing this comparison off Halo 2 on the Xbox 360. There is a bit of graphical improvement to the game running on the Xbox 360. And that should be closer to medium. However, Halo 2 on the original xbox is probably closer to low settings, however, i think some details are close to Medium still.

While certain things like textures are dimmed for performance on Low with Halo 2 Vista, you can easily point out all of the stuff in the Xbox version that are absolutely abysmal (Running on the 360 even) that easily lead up to it being no where near as good as Vista. For -blam!- sake, it's stretched 480p. Just look at these two examples of what it looks like on a 1080p monitor
Halo 2 Vista on Low Settings Halo 2 Xbox version (Running on the 360)
[Edited on 07.30.2012 12:07 PM PDT]

The OEM install of Windows 7 on my Alienware laptop couldn't run Halo 2 Vista. But then a clean install of Windows 7 using a retail copy, ran Halo 2 Vista just fine on the exact same hardware.
That being in response to me talking about mouse lag, frame rate drops, etc. I never once mentioned the game running or not. Either you were confused or you're making stuff up to cover your tracks instead of simply admitting you're wrong about it.
The screenshot that was taken on the Xbox version was being run on the Xbox 360. What you need to understand is that there's no clear "Medium is the Xbox version".

According to that quote, I clearly said Halo 2 Vista "ran" just fine on Windows 7. I clearly meant the game just running. When I was talking about the issues related to Windows 7 and Halo 2, I was referring to the most common issues of the game simply not running. Back in the old GFWL forums, that seemed to be the most common issue. I know I replied directly to your post about the lag and other issues, but I was talking about the more general issue of the game simply not running. I know the Xbox version runs at a much lower resolution than the PC version, however, if you just look at the texture details, the Xbox version is slightly more detailed at close distances than the PC version on Low settings. I think it's detailed enough for it to be pretty close to Medium settings on the PC.

Got it. Just because I know you'll claim you knew the point, here's why you missed it: I clearly wasn't talking about the game simply running at all. The problems I mentioned were frame rate drops, mouse lag, etc. If what you were saying was about how Halo 2 Vista does run on clean retail installs of Windows 7, not only were you wrong for stating that as a fact for everyone but you were also completely off-topic to what I was talking about. The textures themselves might be better but that means nothing when you're dealing with absolutely abysmal resolutions. Definitely if you're playing on a modern HD screen. Hell, Halo 2 Vista looks better than Halo 2 Xbox on low at 800x600 which is the lowest resolution I can set it to. I guess you could say it's up to opinion but I feel this would qualify as a bad opinion. I find it hard how anyone would think the Xbox version looks better as a whole against Halo 2 Vista on low simply because the textures seem to have a higher quality. The higher resolution in the textures mean nothing if the game's resolution is horrendous beyond belief. [Edited on 07.31.2012 12:19 AM PDT]

Now the systems I've seen tested all used an Intel CPU and all either used Intel HD Graphics or nVidia GeForce. AMD components might have a different effect. Anyways, at the very least, a clean install using a retail copy of Windows 7 should fix the problems for most people. I fully agree Halo 2 Vista has much better graphics overall than the Xbox version. I was just picking out really small details. However, if I recall correctly, a lot of people criticized Halo 2 Vista for it's lack of significant graphical improvements over the Xbox version. I'm not really sure what else could have been improved unless people were expecting improvements similar to Halo Anniversary. Just out of curiosity, but do you think it's possible for modders to release a high-res texture pack for Halo 2 Vista? I've seen similar things in Halo PC and I know in many other PC games you can do the same thing. I'm not sure if it's even possible for Halo 2 Vista, though I've seen some pretty impressive mods.

Saying "Well on a clean install it starts up!" is completely off-topic to what everyone was talking about. How many times do I have to repeat myself for you to understand that?
First of all, I don't think anyone cares enough at all to create anything for Halo 2 Vista anymore. Second, it's a bit complicated to create mods for Halo 2 Vista seeing as though Microsoft actively tried to stop modded copies of maps. (According to what I've been told anyway) I'm sure that it's possible but I highly doubt anyone cares about the game enough to do anything. Most people who are well versed enough in modding to do something significant like that are also smart enough to realize there are other better games out there they could spend their time on. :P [Edited on 07.31.2012 8:00 PM PDT]
